I like to think I’ve become an expert on running pains.  Really, they come in a lot of flavors.  There are the aches and the stabs, the fractures and the strains, the wandering shooting pain that radiates up and down the entirety of your gastrocnemius muscle whenever you stand on your tiptoes or try to walk up and down steps (you know, for example).

I also have a very high threshold for pain tolerance.  Which is both good and bad.  Good because it means that I might not tell my husband that I wish he were dead quite as much as the average woman during the whole birthing process.  (Ahem.  Eligible bachelors – are you reading this?)  Bad because there are certain pains that you just shouldn’t tolerate.  And I am not very good at distinguishing those from the ones that are just normal everyday pains because, well.  They feel the same to me.

However.  All this means is that when I called my orthopedist yesterday to try to make an appointment to talk to him about my calves and how they kind of feel like they’re repeatedly being stabbed with a large knife whenever I walk on them.  He really should have dropped everything.

Instead, he said (okay, his receptionist said), “Hmmm I have an open appointment on December 21st.”

And this was after I told him that I couldn’t walk.  (A lie.  I can totally walk.  But sometimes when you’re dealing with irrational people like this.  You need to say irrational things.  Speak to their level of understanding.  You know how it is.)

So I tried to play it cool.  “Oh, you must mean November 21st,” I said.

He chuckled.  (Chuckled?  Can someone please show me the humor in this.  Because to me, crippling pain. Not funny.  NOTE – mom, I am not crippled, nor am I in crippling pain.  Intense shooting pain, yes.  Crippling pain, no.  Please do not call me in a panic.  Thanks.)  “Uh, no.  December 21st.”

“Uh, yeah,” I said.  “I will totally make that appointment on December 21st.  That will be so useful.” In my most sarcastic voice possible.  Then I hung up the phone.  Because honestly, if this isn’t cleared up by December 21st.  I will likely have to be placed in some kind of psychiatric asylum. And then he will have to carry that guilt for the rest of his life.  Not my problem.

At this point, I was in some kind of manic rage.  And the only two things that I could foresee calming me down.  Were Pioneer Woman.  And pasta.  Obviously.

So I headed over to PW Cooks.  Read a few of her posts.  Laughed out loud a bit too much and..uh..too loudly.  And then stuffed myself full of her pasta with tomato-blue cheese sauce.

It has curative carbalicious properties.  I know it.  And if you use almond milk instead of heavy cream…you won’t feel any guilt at all about eating it.  Your thighs won’t even quiver.  I swear it.

(And just in case you were worried.  I called one of my coaches and made an appointment at his physical therapy office.  For Monday.  This Monday.  Yeah, he cares about my health and well being.  Ain’t that something.)

Pasta with Tomato-Blue Cheese Sauce
Serves 4, adapted from Pioneer Woman Cooks

1 lb pasta
1 tbsp olive oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 28-oz can diced tomatoes
pinch of sugar
salt and pepper to taste
crushed red pepper flakes, to taste
1/2 cup blue cheese crumbles
1/2 cup almond milk
1 bundle of spinach from the Farmer’s market…probably around 4-5 cups
extra blue cheese for crumbling

1. Set a pot of salted water to boil for the pasta.

2. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.  Add olive oil.  When shimmering, add the three cloves garlic.  Cook for about 30 seconds or until garlic becomes fragrant.  Add in the canned diced toamtoes (I used San Marzanos…always the way to go).  Season with sugar, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes.  Simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. If your water is now boiling, go ahead and add in the pasta.  Pour the blue cheese crumbles and the milk into the tomatoes and stir until melted.  Put the spinach leaves in the strainer that you’re going to use to strain the pasta.  Pour the pasta water (and pasta) over these while straining so that the spinach gets cooked instantly.  Mix the pasta and now-cooked spinach with the sauce in a large bowl.  Season to taste.  Serve in bowls, topped with an extra tbsp of blue cheese crumbles.

  1. things i’m certain of:

    1) most doctors don’t give a damn. but i do have an awesome orthopedic surgeon (who thank goodness never operated on me) who saw me immediately after finding out that there was a girl in the office limping around and barely capable of walking.
    2) 28-ounce cans of diced tomatoes are a totally necessary pantry staple. (where do you purchase this brand you speak of?)
    3) yoga heals all wounds. or at least keeps you busy and calm while wounds (running or otherwise) are healing themselves.

    that’s a whole lot of certainty for 8AM, huh?

    I’m with you in the San Marzano tomatoes – always the best, IMHO.

    Sadly, I am also with you on the pain tolerance. To add to that, the women in my family (grandma, sister and I, at least) have a hereditary tolerance to pain meds. Yeah. Vicodin doesn’t even touch it when I have pain. So, I generally just suffer becausew at that point, what else is there to do, right? And doctors? (no offense to your future vocation, I’m sure there are SOME sensible doctors) don’t really care. For that matter, they don’t really believe us most of the time, either.
    So, I’m here for you, sister! I feel your pain (pun intended).

    Pasta sounds great… pain on the other hand… not so much.

    Thanks for sharing the dish with Presto Pasta Nights and hopefully the physiotherapist will have you healed by the time you see the Orthopedic surgeon.

    Oh, yum! My 8 year old daughter would eat the blue cheese sauce with a spoon! No kidding!! I love everything about this pasta hun, the pasta looks divine. And I agree, your tablecloth is super cute : )

    Running pain is sooooo different from birthing pain : )
    I’ve had both, and I am sad to tell you that the running pain will stay with you much longer. Have you tried a hot soak with epsom salts? I know it sounds old fashioned but it helped my feet when I was a runner. I used to also soak in my parents hot tub and that was amazing for some of my soreness and pains.

    Ahhhhh. I totally know the feeling. I’ve been in a similar situation where I had to wait a month for an appt. The problem resolved itself before the appt. but in the meantime, I lost about a week of living life. Unless you count laying in bed watching bad TV and whimpering living life…

    Anyway. I’m so psyched you posted this dish because I thought I was out of blue cheese so I bought some more last night only to find a huge container in the fridge. Now I need to use it.

    Aren’t these doctors aweful or what? I know you study to become one don’t be offended you are excluded from this statement. It has happened to me and I wasn’t that polite as you were. I demanded an earlier appointment and finally I got it!I think women are more tolerant to pain than men. I guess we are stronger. As far as the labor pains are concerned I can tell you that when I had my son the pain was so strong I didn’t want to talk because I wanted to keep my strength to endure it. This pasta must have made you forget all this bad story.

In the meantime, glad you are getting some help and are not so debilitated that you couldn’t prepare and post this delicious recipe.

    Believe it or not, I actually have vegan blue cheese on hand at this very moment, and am having trouble finding a reason why not to make this pasta dish. It sounds simple and tasty, just what I could use!

    You crack me up. That was how I felt when, overnight (not to be gross), I got a UTI and thought I was going to DIE. I finally got in to the walk in clinic first thing the next morning (because my damn doctor couldn’t get me in till 5PM the next day) and told her about my damn doctor and asked why they don’t treat this as an emergency and she actually LAUGHED. The nerve. I had been considering calling an ambulance and going to the ER over night. And I’ve given birth so I know what the heck pain is and I have a high tolerance for pain too. So there.

    I would totally make this if I wasn’t the only one in the house who likes strong cheeses. Did you see PW on Throwdown with Bobby Flay last night? She was awesome. I swear Ree could solve world peace.

    Oh no, I’m sorry about the doctor! That is so annoying. Mike has been having pretty bad tooth pain and his dentist actually told him to wait 2 weeks to see if it still hurts and then call back to set up an appointment. What?! Anyway, the pasta looks fantastic!

    Usually i have to that kind talk while i am making Gynecologist appointment. They are booked for almost every day.It is sad that you are in pain, and he is extending the appointment for about one month. Hope you will find some solution.

    Flipping doctors. Honestly he probably won’t know what’s wrong with you either. A friend of mine went in to see TWO different orthopedists at top LA hospitals. One said she had a hip issue and needed an immediate operation, the other doc said she had arthritis and needed an immediate series of shots.

    After she thought about it for 3 weeks and did some consistent foam-rolling, physical therapy and stretching…the pain was gone. NO irreversible surgeries (that surely would have made the docs some good $).

    I’d trust a physical therapist / sports rehab counselor well before 90% of doctors. I know you’re going to med school 😉 I know you’ll be in that special 10% that actually CARES about the patient, not about performing a costly surgery – particularly on athletes.

    RANT! <3 Regardless, I hope it feels better.

    I am not a huge fan of blue cheese but this recipe sounds delicious. Sorry to hear about your ordeal. I can totally sympathize, the military hospital at our last base had limited staff and no matter the reason for the appointment you had to wait at least a month. I am glad that this base has an ER so if anything horrible happens I can go right in. I would keep calling them to see if there are cancellations. You might get lucky and get someone who can pull some strings for you.

  27. Oopsy , dis is sad, it aint so bad here, unless its the dentist and if its an emergency {like me eating things im not supposed to, breaking braces, then after trying a couple of hours of stunts and all sorts of appliances ,rushn to my doc}ur in a breeze!
    Infact ,they do come over too, if u want them too, not all ,but they do!!
    One sweetest doc, who is a great family pal too, hops by ,we love it, and whoever was sick starts feeling better, and then im rushing in and out of the kitchen ,fixing goodies , so can keep the food flowing for the conversation thats going!

    Am glad ur physical therapist will see u, its must be lousy to be in pain like that!!
    And being in pain ,u actually got some amazing Pasta with blue cheese going!
    I had a veggie dinner and am so totally hungry now!!

    I feel so sorry for your legs…hopefully they get better soon! Wanna know whats worse than having a high pain tolerance? Being me. Yes me. On an average day anytime I feel a weird pain in my body I usually think I’m dying of one of the following ailments: stroke, heart attack or blood clot. I’m pretty much a doctors worse nightmare.

    Ok back to pasta. So tasty. Maybe if I ate more of that I wouldn’t always think I was dying…

    I can’t stand it when I call my doctor and tell her I have an emergency and they so gracefully tell me I can come in after 30 days. I just want to go postal on them!!

    I hope you feel better soon. Hit the ER if worst comes to worst. Sometimes thats the only way you can get things done in a timely manner.

  34. Glad you have an appointment Monday. This tells you that your becoming a doctor is going to help the waiting times. Here it takes 2 years to get into a gastroenterologist on an URGENT appointment. Sheesh. Now if the masses had to wait for their dinner we would need surgery so good thing you offered us some delicious pasta!!

  38. I have had such a harrowing incident in June when I stretched my belly muscles coz I over did the treadmill & elliptical.I was rushed to an emergency coz I cudnt stand up…It took flat 40 minutes for smbody to attend me…it was PATHETIC!
    Anyways the pasta is super delish looking!

  39. I always think it’s insane how Dr.’s will do that! You say you are in pain, and it’s no big deal to them that you have to wait over a month. Do they really have that many people to be booked until then? I wish I knew what to tell you about your calf muscles, but sadly I don’t… And you are right, what is a better way to make yourself fell better than making a PW dish!

  42. I”m totally with you on the PW providing stress-relieving magic. And lots of laughs. I’ve actually made this recipe many, many times and it is INCREDIBLE. The depth of flavor achieved by relatively few ingredients never ceases to amaze me. I posted a version on my blog with more spinach, dry sherry, and some spices, and it’s also fantastic. You just can’t go wrong with blue cheese, tomatoes, and pasta.

    Stinks about the pain and yeah ridiculous that you can’t get in sooner than dec 21! Same thing happened to me last year when I had a flu and called the Dr. and their 1st opening was in a week! I was like….yeah well…I plan to be all better by then. Crazy.

    Yikes, that does seem painfull. I never felt pain when I ran but I was never as fast as you. But I do have a high tolerance for pain, drove myself to the hospital when I was delivering twins b/c my stomach felt weird and told my husband to calm down when I was pushing 😉 You will be there too 🙂

    As far as childbirth, uh, I’ll talk to you after your first. I always thought that I had a high pain tolerance too.

    Oh no…stabbing pain in your calves is never a good thing. Glad to hear that someone can see you soon. It’s always frustrating when you can’t get in to see your doctor right away.
    I think you cooked up the perfect remedy. Pasta with tomato and blue cheese sauce sounds like a pasta and cheese lover’s dream and this almond milk…..I have to remember to buy it! Why oh why do they put it in the most inconspicuous places? I always forget about it.

    When I herniated a disc in my back I called the doctor telling them I had constant spasming in my back, I couldn’t walk or sit. They told me they could see me in 2 weeks. Sometimes I think there needs to be better triage on those appointment hotlines.

    wth! i hate when i try to book an appointment and they tell me the soonest they can get me in is like a month or so away. usually by then ive either found an alternative or got so used to whatever the ailment was that i end up not bothering. its rediculous given your pain. the people on the phone are likely sitting there oblivious to how the client is feeling- urghhh!

  82. I’m no doctor, but I’m no stranger to nerve pain, and that sounds a lot like a herniated disc to me.

    My prescription – eat a whole lot more of this insanely good-looking pasta dish, and find a good yoga teacher, both of which will make you feel better while your body heals 🙂

    birthing pain…i think it’s one of those things that even blue cheese nor chocolate can’t help. on a scale of 1-10 it’s at 1,000,000,000 ^_^

    I get such anxiety when I have to see a doctor…they can be so snooty! I’m so sorry about your pain, and I wish I could send you a sure-fix solution! I, like you, turn to food when I’m feeling down or anxious, and this pasta dish looks like an excellent remedy!     A good PW recipe is the perfect remedy. My husband isn’t much of a pasta guy but he is quite the blue cheese guy. I wonder if he’d eat this. I know I would! Hope you heal quickly!

    You don’t even want to know how terrible my doc is. First of all, he isn’t even my doc. My doc shared the office with him and ran away. Now I am stuck with the remaining guy, whose wife (Indian version of a fish-wife) very kindly wrote on my file NOT OUR PATIENT so that I could sit and wait for hours while other people come and go. But I am a Canadian, and it is not in our nature to protest too loudly. So I sit. And wait. Wait for you to get your license, actually. I’ll be here. Waiting.

    Yup, I know all about the pains of running. And you’re right — comfort food is the best way to relieve those pains. I hope you’re not getting too injured. I know that’s pretty common when you get back into running, so be careful girl! Seriously, though this pasta looks amazing, and gives me so many ideas about variations. I’m thinking: adding some different veggies, try a different cheese (parmesan, feta, peccorino)…possibilities are endless. Thanks for the inspiration!

  96. I too, can tolerate pain quite well and very often have pause and wonder if a sensation should be serious enough to be considered as pain. But you are right, it is dangerous to ignore pain and you definitely should do something about it before 21st dec! The Chinese always believe that one should take care of their problems when they are young else they will come back to haunt you big time when you get older! Don’t push yourself too much over running and continue churning out more delicious and healthy treats like these ! 🙂

    21st december does seem a long way away – at least I have many things to do before then – and I am sure you do – good luck with limping through the next month – that is tough!

    More delicious pasta meals like this might help but would be more satisfying if eaten while hacking into your orthopedist’s calendar and making your appt earlier – esp if you could delete a christmas party in the process 🙂
