Word on the street (and out of the.boy’s mouth) is that my tailgating virginity is simultaneously a travesty and unforgivable (personally I think his interest is just piqued by the word “virginity”, but whatever). That I am missing out on one of life’s best!, most fun! and most delicious! experiences and that we really must remedy this “situation” we’ve found ourselves in immediately before I become a cat lady or, worse, a Giants fan.

What one has to do with the other, I’m still thoroughly unclear on, nor do I have any idea how a boy born and raised in Brooklyn can call himself a diehard Cowboys fan. But so it is.

The thing is, the whole standing outside and shivering for hours on end thing is not really my style.

I’m much more of a sprawl out on the couch with a pumpkin beer and a big plate of food under a blanket kind of gal.

But…I thought I’d concede just a little to the.boy. So I made him barbecue sauce.

Smoky spicy beery chocolatey barbecue sauce. Barbecue sauce that you kind of want to smother all over everything you can get your hands on and that, with just one sniff, transports you back to the football stadiums of your college days.

Barbecue sauce that I then proceeded to serve him on a veggie burger. Probably not the most conventional of tailgating cuisine…

…But, you know. It’s the thought that counts.

This recipe is part of a series I’m doing with Divine Chocolate to show how you can infuse their delicious chocolate into every meal of your day! Though I received their chocolate bars for free, my thoughts and opinions on it are all my own. Also, I would like to announce the winners of last week’s #DivineInNYC giveaway! The winners are: Kammie of Sensual Appeal, Abby of Seaweed and Sassafras, and Meredith. I’ll be emailing you!

  2. Simply Life says:

I’m with you and would typically prefer enjoying this in a warm house… 🙂

  3. I think I’ve been tailgating a couple of times in college. I say maybe because I really can’t remember any of those events for some, mysterious, definitely-not-under-age-drinking related reason. So, I say youre not missing out. Especially with chocolate beer BBQ sauce — AWESOME

  4. Chewthefat says:

I have friends from my area who are Cowboys fans and I totally DON’T get it. Well, your post coincides with the Giants’ first win! Go Giants!

  5. Johanna GGG says:

wonderful sauce – have bookmarked (and even linked with some other savoury chocolate links on my site – hope you don’t mind)

now what is tailgating – in my neck of the woods this means to drive so close to the car in front that you are almost touching or at least dangerously close – but I suspect you mean it in another way – because I just can’t see a link between the car and this delicious bbq sauce

  6. This would be amazing on a veggie burger! And a nice healthy compromise. I love this, how creative.

  7. Kathryn says:

This barbecue sauce sound totally epic – I love all the levels of flavours you’ve managed to sneak in!

  8. patsy says:

Now that’s a twist on bbq sauce I haven’t seen before! I’m wondering if my KC BBQ loving family would enjoy this one… it definitely has the sweetness of a KC sauce from what I can see in your recipe so, it just might be something I could get away with next time we need BBQ sauce!

  9. Oh my gosh, this looks so, so good! I am in love with everything about this bbq sauce.

  10. bellini says:

Tailgaiting is just not a thing here in The Great White North, maybe for just the reasons you mentioned about shivering in the cold. But I would gladly put some chocolate BBQ sauce on my veggie burger or otherwise.

  11. Erica says:

I hate football (and all other sports), but I love this recipe!!

  12. I prefer couch-watching over tailgaiting, too, but I do admit that it’s fun. This BBQ sauce is making me crave a burger – and to think I just ate breakfast! 😉

  13. I have never tried a bbq sauce made with chocolate…how interesting and tempting!

  14. This sounds soooo good Joanne!! What part the the worcestershire sauce play? Not a fan, could I leave it out?

  15. Sues says:

Whoa. This is the best idea I’ve seen in a long time! Can i eat it with a spoon?

  20. BBQ sauce on a veggie burger sounds DELIGHTFUL! [And I’m sure if you didn’t tell anyone they wouldn’t even know!] It’s the new way to tailgate 🙂

  21. Paul told me that there’s some football team (I forget which one because, well, football…who cares), where the fans actually stand the entire time to show their support. I’m like, “what? that’s the dumbest thing ever. And this is why I would never want to attend a game in person.”

    Regardless…this sauce? Holy shit. YUM.

  22. Did I just read this correctly? Chocolate? And beer? And smoked paprika? In barbecue sauce? Like I’ve said before, you’re a genius. Need to eat this right now.

  23. go Cowboys! this looks like the perfect thing for this weekend!

  27. Kate says:

I feel like you need a game to go to if you want to tailgate, and your school didn’t really have a football team, right?

  28. Karen says:

Ooh, that looks good! I bet it was even good on a veggie burger 😉

  29. Eileen says:

Homemade bbq sauce! YES. THE BEST. I don’t think I’ve ever made one with chocolate before, though–must try soon!

  35. Hotly Spiced says:

Pumpkin ale? Now that’s a new one for me. I’ll have to look out for it. This sauce sounds very interesting. I don’t think I’ve had a BBQ sauce with chocolate in it before. I’m kind of glad my husband isn’t sports-mad. I would hate to be dragged out every weekend to watch some game! xx

  38. I love tailgating, but then again, I have a strange affection for standing in parking lots and eating chili out of a styrofoam bowl while clutching a cold beer wrapped in a koozy, just before screaming my head off at a football game. Very ladylike, I’m sure.
I love that you added chocolate to this BBQ sauce!! I’m definitely giving that a go- you know, the next time I’m freezing and excited in a parking lot and holding a foam finger or four 🙂

  49. Now, this is probably a terrible confession, but I don’t even know what tailgating IS! Here in Australia, it means driving really close to the car in front of you, but that doesn’t seem to fit the context…
