Do you have any idea how liberating it is to throw something, maybe an entire semester’s worth of lecture notes (we are talking MANY pounds of paper), out of a twelve story window?

No?

Well, neither do I.

I have spent a lot of time thinking about it, though, and I imagine it is somewhat similar to the satisfaction one feels when throwing a physics textbook out of a two story window. (In my defense, there was already a hole in the window’s screen when we got there. What was I supposed to do, if not use it? And can you think of a more fitting way to prove, irrefutably, that Newton was right all along? F does in fact equal m*a.)

Sophie thought that, while two stories was one thing, twelve would be a little extreme. Gratuitous even.

So then I told her about my blowtorch idea.

Just think, we can purge ourselves of medical school WHILE eating creme brulee.

That was when she instituted the rule that I had to be supervised around flames at all times. She now sits in the kitchen, eying me carefully, whenever I use the stove.
Fine fine fine. No windows. No fire.

How about a party, I asked. A dinner party. After which we throw all of our notes in the garbage. Simultaneously. And then go have a beer. Or a nice glass of wine. Or a gin and tonic.

Well. Sophie said. As long as we recycle.
And thus, this casserole was born. Delicious and nutritious, it gave us the energy we needed to hoist the super huge piles of notes onto our shoulders and carry them down the hall to the recycling bin.

Although I have to say. That starting tomorrow, I am going to start working on Sophie about that blowtorch.

Supper Casserole with Pumpkin and Green Chile Cornbread Topping
Serves 6-8, adapted from A Veggie Venture

1 1/3 lb extra lean ground turkey
1 onion
1 can diced tomatoes
1 cup salsa verde
1 cup frozen corn
1 can black beans
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1 egg
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 cup canned pumpkin
4 tbsp butter
1/2 cup salsa verde
2 cups flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp salt

1. Preheat oven to 350. In a large skillet, cook the turkey and onion (diced) until turkey is cooked through. Stir in the ingredients up until the egg. Let heat through. Pour into a 9×13 inch casserole dish.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg, 1 cup canned pumpkin, brown sugar, butter and salsa. Separately, whisk together the remaining ingredients. Plop spoonfuls of the cornbread batter over the meat layer in the casserole dish. Bake for 40 minutes. Cover and let cool for 10 minutes.

This is the ninth recipe in my 12 Weeks of Winter Squash! I am submitting this to Weekend Herb Blogging which is being hosted in two weeks by Haalo of Cook (Almost) Anything At Least Once!

  3. Megan says:

I’m glad you decided not to throw everything out the window – just imagine the people below running for their lives, thinking the sky was falling!

And I agree, you probably should be supervised with flames……

  4. Tiffany says:

Actually, you didn’t just throw A physics textbook out our window, you threw MY physics textbook out our window. But I understand, it was the only reasonable action to take given the circumstances 🙂

  5. Shannon says:

there was alot of satisfaction in recycling all those papers from grad school when i moved from philly 😉 that pumpkin cornbread is a fantastic idea! have a great holiday joanne!!!

  6. Luigi says:

Ohh don’t throw out your notes, do what I do, wait till you pass, then BURN THEM! It was the most satisfying, hugest bonfire, Ever! Although we did sprinkle them with gasoline first, just to make sure. 😀

This looks amazing, you must be getting tired of squash/pumpking though? surely. LOL!!!

  7. If it’s warm weather (at least 80), you can make a smoker out of tin foil… Use the notes, roll them up tight, coat with a little vegetable oil add some wood and smoke some ribs and really have something important to show for all that effort.

There are lots of doctors, not everyone can smoke a great rack of ribs. If you are going to chuck it all, call me… i will talk you through it

  8. This looks like a super casserole! Best wishes on the studying. Perhaps one day we’ll hear about your falling textbooks from the sky in the newspaper. 🙂

  9. Mari says:

Is it strange that one day I would like to throw an ex boyfriend’s things out of the window like in the movies? lol..

that dish looks muy bueno =)

  10. I remember the day I graduated from Grad School and I just threw about 5 pounds worth of paper away. It was an amazing feeling 🙂 I love your recipes! So unique!!

  11. Ho ho ho,at this time i can only think of packing my notes (it aint time for me yet though) in a nice red santa bag and on a look out for someone who would use my hand ink written with loads of lov notes…..and then i figure out why everyone’s running in the opposite direction…..
i finally cut up our little pumpkin at home today and we had a lovely yummy curry….
u come up with lovely innovations with pumpkins dont ya….
Ur casserole looks yummy in the cute white bowl….

  12. My husband still has his college notes. Maybe, you could talk to him about the satisfaction of getting rid of them. He even has his text books. Remember, we are grandparents.

Maybe, I can bribe him with your casserole. I will give it a try.

  13. SE(Denufood) says:

ha ha …throwing the physics book out of the window…Newton will start screaming !!!!!!!Finally 3 more recipes to go…awesome !!! Cheers ! for so many innovative recipes with those pumpkins !!

I love the green chile cornbread over this casserole. What a great winter meal!

  15. Amy says:

    Did someone say casserole? Hello.

Joanne, I don’t know how you do it. Grad school, daily blogging, and running. I probably would have thrown (or burned) my notes a long time ago. But, perhaps that’s why I didn’t get any further than a B.A. I’ll take it though. I still wake up in a cold sweat sometimes, thinking it didn’t happen. And I graduated from college in 1993!

  16. Erica says:

That looks delicious and sounds very tasty!!!!!!Great casserole recipe.Happy holidays!

  17. Love it! 🙂 This looks SO good and I imagine all that tossing was wonderfully cathartic :-)Merry Christmas! 🙂

  18. Debinhawaii says:

The blow torch sure sounds like more fun! 😉 This looks like the perfect “fuel” for heavy lifting/carrying.

  19. Palidor says:

I thought about burning my notes when I finished law school. Luckily I kept them, and they did come in handy later on.

Happy Holidays, Joanne! I hope you enjoy the break from school. All the best in the new year.

  20. Karine says:

The blow torch seems a great idea :). A bit dangerous, but a great idea to express emotions.

Enjoy your holidays and get some rest! 🙂 Your next term will come too fast.

  21. Velva says:

A great casserole. Make sure when you are ready to dispose of those paper pounds make sure it goes out in a blaze of glory-it will feel so good.

  22. Very creative recipe! The mixture of flavors is very appealing, especially for a cold winter night!

  23. Kim says:

While throwing them out of the window would be the most satisfying, torching them is a great runner up! Maybe next time ;D I love the casserole, which sounds a lot like a tamale pie packed full of protein with beans and turkey!! Have a wonderful Christmas!!

  24. Oh wow that casserole sounds wonderful. I am bookmarking this recipe for next winter!

  25. I say recycle, then booze, then creme brulee.
Great looking casserole, I love that cornbread topping!

  26. SE(Denufood) says:

Hi Joanne – thanks so much for swinging back over for warm holiday wishes. I really appreciate it! Merry Merry Christmas to you, too. Be warm and safe!

  31. I don’t know, I’m thinking there can be great satisfaction throwing something out a 12 story window … you know, provided we made sure the coast was clear first. 😉

  32. theUngourmet says:

It would be fun to throw all those papers out the window!

And, might I say, you have such a way with squash! This looks marvelous!

Hope your Christmas is just lovely!

  33. When I was done with all my exams and thesis research I packed it all up in boxes and eventually forgot where the boxes went. Then the other day my mother-in-law told me that she has a whole bunch of my boxes blocking everything in her storage closet (oops!).

Your casserole looks wonderful with the green chile cornbread topping. Merry Christmas!

  34. Katy ~ says:

Wishing you the very best for 2010.

Certainly a squash casserole such as this would be a savory way to welcome the new year.

I say throw the paper out the window. Course would hate to see someone make you go out and pick it up sheet by sheet. Blow torch is better.

  35. Johanna GGG says:

this casserole looks amazing – I love anything with pumpkin so it stands to reason that I would doubly love this – definitely not one to throw out the window!!!
