Enough with the moaning and groaning. Just put away your books. Take out your pencils.
And no one. Will. Get. Hurt.
Hey. If I have to suffer through an exam every week. Then the least you can do is go down with me. It’s. Only. Fair.
A piece of tiramisu comes to the emergency department of the hospital at which you are an attending and presents with a stab wound from a knife that entered through his umbilicus (i.e. what is approximately the center of his body). What layers did the knife puncture, in order from superior to inferior?
(a) external oblique fascia, rectus abdominis, rectus sheath, transversalis fascia
(b) Camper’s fascia, Scarpa’s fascia, rectus abdominis, transversalis fascia
(c) cocoa powder, vanilla-scented mascarpone, Bailey’s- and coffee-infused ladyfingers, followed by another dreamy set (can you have too many) of vanilla-scented mascarpone, Bailey’s- and coffee-infused ladyfingers
(d) peritoneal membrane, transversalis fascia, transversus abdominis, internal oblique
If you chose b as your correct answer. You sadly mistook your patient for a living, breathing person. Better go and study the difference between animate and inanimate objects. But good job on your human anatomy. If you’re looking for a career in medicine, then I hear Cornell is accepting applicants. It seems that a spot has opened up since some crazy and reckless individual has decided to go to cooking school instead.
Wishful. Thinking.
If you chose c. You are CORRECT. You’ve been doing some outside reading, I see. Well done my friend. Well. Done.
If you chose a or d. You obviously know nothing about either tiramisu or your own body. Yeah. I’m not sure what you’ve been doing with your time either. Nothing productive. Obviously. It’s okay. You have a chance to redeem yourself. Make this tiramisu. Eat two pieces (if you can stop there) and call me in the morning.
Doctor’s orders.
Bonus question.
What have you submitted for Regional Recipes: Ireland? I know St. Paddy’s day has come and gone but, as evidenced by this tiramisu, Bailey’s (and Guinness) can be consumed. Year. Round. So let’s get to it! The deadline for submission is March 31. Please send your entries to me at [email protected]. Make sure you include a link to your recipe, a photo, and put a link to the event (i.e. my blog) on your post. Best news is – I will accept any Irish dish that you cooked for St. Paddy’s day this year even if it was posted earlier this month. Just make sure you add in a link to the event!
Bailey’s Irish Creme and Vanilla Tiramisu
Serves 9, adapted from Baking Bites
8 oz mascarpone, room temperature
1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar
1 cup heavy cream, COLD
2 tsp vanilla
1 cup strongly brewed coffee, room temperature
1/4 cup Bailey’s Irish Creme
2 boxes of ladyfingers (each of my boxes had 20…I think I used 35 in total)
unsweetened cocoa powder
1. In a mixing bowl, beat the mascarpone, confectioner’s sugar, heavy cream and vanilla until combined, fluffy, and smooth.
2. Mix the Bailey’s and coffee together in a bowl. Dunk a ladyfinger into this mixture (2-3 seconds) and then layer it into the bottom of an 8×8 or 9×9 baking dish. Repeat until the bottom of the pan is covered in a single layer.
3. Spread half of the mascarpone mixture on top of this.
4. Repeat step 2.
5. Repeat step 3, adding all of the remaining mascarpone.
6. Dust with cocoa powder. Cover with plastic wrap and let sit in the fridge overnight or at least 6 hours.
7. Serve to your sister for her thirteenth birthday. Or. You know. Eat it while sitting at home on a Friday night studying for anatomy. It’s your call.
This is my submission to this month’s Have the Cake!
You absolutely crack me up, Joanne! I think you should write a book…not just a cook book but one that includes your wonderful dry, witty sense of humor. You’d make a million bucks!
The only thing that prevents me from making this dish is the fact that I don’t care for the taste of coffee. 🙁 I know, its weird but I don’t like anything with that flavor…not ice cream or candy or tiramisu.
None of the items that I made for St. Paddy’s day were my own creations so I don’t feel right submitting them to your Regional Recipes but its a great idea. I only copy from the best! LOL
oh my external oblique fascia, rectus abdominis, rectus sheath, transversalis fascia, Camper’s fascia, Scarpa’s fascia, rectus abdominis, transversalis fascia – joanne this absolutely amazing!
So what are you studying in school? Tee hee. You’ve clearly had way too many tests and quizzes recently. 🙂
This is one of the evil desserts that I have been drooling over for the last month. Baily’s so rocks. I can certainly see how studying anatomy would be more pleasant while consuming this delightful dessert. Lots of extra studying I’d imagine.
hey tiramisu looks so sinfully delicious..yumm..
yummm..tiramisu looks so sinfully delicious..
I just love your blog, I smile from the first word to the last 🙂 I did choose c. – did I pass? As in, can I get a piece!? Yum!

that sounds awesome — want to make one for me for my defense? I’m pretty sure this would get my committee to pass me 🙂
How heavenly! I would love to eat two and call you in the morning. I’ll send you my address, you send me the Bailey’s Irish Creme and Vanilla Tiramisu 🙂
I love your sense of humor, I can’t stop smiling each time I read one of your posts! You’re the best!
Simply fabulous looking Tiramisu. Pass a fork please.
Cheers
Both Bailey’s and Tiramisu are a favourite with my family – I don’t have Bailey’s, though I get it for them if I travel, and tiramisu for me is so-so, because it contains coffee and I don’t really care for coffee in dessert. My uncle has ice-cream with Bailey’s on top.
SO GLAD I MADE YOUR MORNING> of course, fj has to go like, oh yeah, your foot didn’t even hit me. BLEH! BLEH!
my mom LOVES tiramisu, so i’ll be sure to make this for her one day!
Wooow,,Joane!!! You are great dear,,,bailey n tiramisu looks lovely dear came out very perfect,,hope you enjoyed this lovely rich dessert.thanks for sharing dear,,,take care n keep on cute smiling,,
Dear,
The lady-fingers tiramisu looks awesome and hey, i flunked the guessing game. The medical facts had my head spinning. My brain is fried..no wonder I chose IT over Medicine.
That looks and sounds incredible!!! I am going to have to make this. This should help make studying easier!!!
That looks so scrumptious!
xoxo
Sometimes in life u have to quote Rachel Zoe. And so here goes. “I die, I die”. For this tiramisu. Oh gaaaaaaaawd, WHY do they not have mascarpone in my neighborhood grocery store, dammit?!
looks so divine! my favorite dessert in the whole world.. love the irish twist you put on it too.
I never was all that good at multiple choice questions … I KNEW there was a reason why I decided not to go to medical school … 🙂
Tiramisu is one of my favorite desserts, and yours looks right up my alley. I usually like dense desserts, but there’s just something about the soft fluffy texture of tiramisu that gets me every time.
Good luck with the submission – I bet you’ll win!
This was a fun post and as always I keep learning from blogging. It has been many years since school so the mind seems to wander…
Oh my goodness, I am coming over right now for my two pieces!
Oh my my !! How I wish I was your sweet neighbor…lol..Too good Joanne 🙂
My heavens, girl! This is ridiculously wonderful! 🙂 I never thought of making it with Baileys, but somehow it’s PERFECT. 🙂 How you get time to make such lovelies with your schedule is beyond me. You’re a wonder! 🙂
I’d just call it and grab a spoon. 😀
I love tiramisu, I can only imagine that with Baileys it’s completely over the top.
Crap, I need to do something for Regional Recipes! Well, I have a corned beef brisket in the fridge. I will do something this weekend, I promise!
i always shy away from tiramisu because it seems like such a project, but looking at your results, it seems very worth it.
It looks great.
Me want! Me want! Me want! Not the exam… the tiramisu, silly. Oh, I would much rather be sitting, enjoying a piece of this. Instead, I am surrounded by packing tape and box cutters. Joy.
Joanne, this looks like an unbelievable tiramisu! YUM!!!
Wow, just heavenly with Bailey’s! Excellent!
great use of some booze!!!
Needs more rum
Wahoo – I picked C. My husband just happened to ask me to make him tiramisu for his b-day. This recipe looks perfect.
What a lovely way to use Baileys :-). Your recipe sounds terrific and looks beautiful.
You should ditch the med school and become a comedy writer. (Don’t let your parents know I said that!)
Great looking dessert!!
Oh my word that looks amazing. I am awed at how you have time time to make all these things!
This looks so fantastic! Just a small piece, please 🙂 I like doctor’s orders! It must taste wonderful with the Baileys.
I need 2 aspirin and to go to bed after this exam. Thank goodness I don’t have to take exams any more! Your tiramisu on the other hand sounds divine and just what the doctor ordered!!!
Gimme a piece of that Tiramisu quick, emergency surgery is eminent! 🙂
THIS IS IT! THIS IS WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO MAKE ME!!!!!!! OMG (((((NOM NOM NOM))))))
I love tiramisu and this looks great! Yummy!
I felt vaguely violated at “rectus sheath”. Can I be excused from this quiz? 😉
Damn great looking dessert, J. My amazing wife would love this one. I might have to be half as amazing as her and make it for her:)
My husband, daughter and son all LOVE tiramisu!! Probably their favorite dessert of all time.
great post..I’m sorry I kept laughing every time I read rectus…hilarious..Oh bailey’s how I lve thee
sweetlife
So happy I aced the quiz! 😉 The tiramisu looks amazing–of course you can’t go wrong with Bailey’s.
tiramisu looks very beautiful…loved it
I think a lot of what makes life so fun can be found right here. Oh my goodness is this something!
Would definitely have a few slices of your tiramisu Jo! How can anyone resist it!
I love baileys!!!!!!That sounds delicious!I am drooling here 🙂
You make me giggle! I needed it today after the muddy doggy paws on my freshly laundered sheets and comforter! I feel a bit like Charles Grodin!
Your tiramisu looks heavenly. I’d love to take a plunge through every one of those luscious layers!!
Why did I never think of Bailey’s for tiramisu? This is perfect!
It is still possible you know that you may quit medical school or the profession for cooking! One of Lebanon’s most celebrated chef, Karim Haidar, used to be a professor of law at the Sorbonne in Paris. Now he cooks for a living!
I wish my doctor would order me to eat this. Seems she has quite the opposite view! What she doesn’t know won’t really hurt her 😉
My goodness! This looks like an incredible twist on the classic tiramisu! You are becoming quite the baker!
Lol, well if it’s doctor’s orders, I guess I NEED to make this tiramisu! 😉 It’s absolutely gorgeous…I don’t know if I’ll be able to restrain myself from eating all the mascarpone mixture before assembling it!
I love tiramisu and this version with Baily’s is very interesting. I watch here in Greece the TV series Untold stories from the ER and let me tell if it’s for me an experience, I can imagine what it is for you doctors.
This is one prescription I love getting often! Tiramisu looks so delish Jo. I wouldnt serve it for my sis’s birthday you know, I’ll have it all by myself 🙂
I passed, I passed! 🙂
That looks delicious. I’m not a big Bailey’s or coffee person (I know, shocking), but I would eat the cream off of the top! I just might have to make an Irish-inspired recipe this weekend. Hmmm…
Sorry about all the tests. That sucks. I HATE tests. Yuck yuck yuck. They’re like bad food –gasp!
wow. speechless. wish i had some of this RIGHT NOW!
Wow, I want to try this ASAP, looks so good, I still have never made a tiramisu, this one looks perfect.
I for one would not be surprised if you went to cooking school! You are gifted. Truly. Just look at this mouth-watering Tiramisu! Love it.
you crack me up 😉 now did you save me some?????
your awesome what a fun post and an amazing tiramisu
What a cute post and I love the pop quiz:)
“Pop. Quiz. Enough with the moaning and groaning. Just put away your books. Take out your pencils.”
When I read the words pop quiz and get out your pencils I immediately had a flashback to years of school where my teachers followed your words with this super silly statement:
“get out a clean sheet of notebook paper”
As opposed to what? A dirty sheet of notebook paper? I imagine a sheet of notebook paper isn’t used for tests or quizzes anymore, but this statement will always stay with me for it’s sheer stupidity.
Enough of my babbling. This recipe sounds amazing. I puffy heart mascarpone and I could literally eat it on anything! Great recipe:D
You are too much, Joanne. At least, I now understand why you are going to med school….for stand up comedy for us. Thanks for going through that grueling schedule just to entertain and I will take a piece of the Tiramisu.
You are a doctor in an apron! Love the Tiramisu.
That’s an amazing tiramisu! 🙂
I love, love, love what you’ve done with tiramisu! And I hope it helped you study!
Love this post 😀 Love all the food here too!
this is one of those treats that just gets better after a few days of refrigeration, but at the same time, it’s too irresistible to wait to dig into! excellent recipe, joanne!
I could definitely get on board with those doctor’s orders! Thanks for yet another very entertaining post. 🙂
You never fail to bring a smile to my face. It doesn’t hurt either that this post is about my favorite dessert AND my favorite liqueur.
OK this looks fantastic! Lovely post – I think those are the best doctor’s orders I’ve heard yet! 🙂
i am making tiramisu for a coworker. I found several recipes- all of them retarded.
I finally said I should look for one on Joannes blog. and sure enough…
I cant wait to get home!
