Now if everyone could please take their seats. That would be. Well. Mandatory. But nice. It would also be nice.
Please silence all electronic devices that may or may not make noise during this presentation.
Including, but not limited to: cell phones, pagers, iPods, iPads, mP3 players, Discmans (way to date yourself, Jo. Good job.), baby monitors and small children.
Silence. Not vibrate.
I know you think it is really critical for you to receive and respond to every email or text message that enters your inbox at any given moment. Or to hear your three month old crying in the next room. But both can wait. (I’m a firm believer in the tough love method of parenting. In conjunction with the send your child to live with your mother method. Both of which are Dr. Spock-approved. And negate the need for your to hear your child’s every gurgle. Trust me. Turn that thing off.)
Be strong. You can do it.
In case of an emergency walk, don’t run to the nearest emergency exit.
In fact. Take some time right now to locate the nearest emergency exit.
Okay never mind. There are no emergency exits. We’re in this for the long haul. For better or worse.
So in the case of an emergency. We are going to sit down on the floor in a huge circle, hold hands, and sway back and forth while singing Kumbaya.
Followed up by the Black-Eyed Peas’ I’ve Got A Feeling. The power of positive thinking, people! Plus I just really like that song.
Remember to keep your hands and feet inside the moving vehicle at all times.
And buckle up. It’s the law.
What? Um. Wrong public service announcement. But good advice nonetheless.
Also. While we’re at it. Wear sunscreen. And don’t take candy from strangers. Or, better yet, take the candy. And run. Then somehow find a way to turn it into a made-for-tv-movie about your life. Or a made-for-tv-blog post.
At least. That’s what I would do.
Speaking of which. Did I mention that it was movie night here in the Bruno household? (And by movie night I mean watch-chick-flicks-using-your-friend-Justin’s-Netflix-account-that-he-has-forgotten-he’s-given-you-his-password-to night.)
And do you know what movie night calls for? Snack food. Something you can put in a bowl and then shove into your mouth by the handful.
Popcorn. Nachos. Potato chips.
White bean dip and homemade pita bread.
Don’t judge. One bite of this dip, which is creamy and so beautifully spiced that you just. Can’t. Stop. Eating it. And you’ll be going at it with your hands too. Or a really big spoon. I promise.
Oh and the homemade pitas are pretty damn good too. Just saying.
White Bean Dip
Makes about 2 cups, adapted from How To Cook Everything
2 cups cooked white beans
1/4 cup olive oil
1 clove garlic
2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
1/2 tsp ground ginger
salt and pepper, to taste
Combine the beans with olive oil, garlic, cumin, cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger in a food processor, and blend until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste.
With this, I made the Turkish-Style Pita Bread from HBinFive. And some sweet potatoes. For dipping. But I think it would also be delicious with any other raw vegetable or chip that you want to dip into it. Or on a sandwich. Whatever floats your boat.
This is my submission to IHCC, the theme of which is Movie Night!
It will also be posted on the HBinFive round-up on Big Black Dog on the 15th!
And it has been yeastspotted!
Reminder! Regional Recipes: Vietnam!
Yummy! I love the bean dip recipe. Are you hosting an event (RR:Vietnam)?I think I just missed out on that announcement.
Oh, I do love me some white beans, yes I do. I’m not judging, I’d gladly sit in front of a movie and do some serious damage to that dip!
Great post, too, love the public service announcement.
I was just telling my mom that I wanted to make some sort of hummus like dip, not hummus since that’s all I’ve been eating lately! This is perfect!
Oh wait, did you feature a home made pita recipe and I missed it?! Would you mind pointing me to the post?!
This would be a perfect meal….love it! Great job Joanne!
xoxo
This sounds delicious!!! With that combo of ingredients, it has to be great!
I have to try some white bean dip. I have recipes in my collection, but have never tried it. I know i would love it. This one sounds especially good. And pitas! Have to try making those too. I have a lot to do. Better get to it!
I love this dip! I made it a few years ago when I first got How to Cook Everything, and it quickly became my go-to white bean dip.
Love any kind of bean dip- and with these spices this one sounds wonderful!
Looks perfect & Yumm..
Any kind of bean dip rocks for me. I don’t make it too often because typically I am the only one who eats it. And I do. All of it. Total lack of control.
I’m sure you have but you’ve seen the Oprah/Black Eyed Peas dance thing right? I just thought of that when reading that you liked the Peas.
This dip looks amazing. I have never done anything with white beans, this is a great idea
Looks yummy… did I mention I love cumin 🙂 The begining did remind me of a lecure hall though 🙂
Put your hands up! Your in violation of making too many awesome foods..LOL! You can tell I am old because I use LOL way too much. It is pretty much the only text abbreviation I know..LOL (sorry). The dip looks delicious… homemade pitas and the dip…mmmm mouthwatering….A great combo, Joanne 🙂
Mmm…a heathy dip. Looks simple and very delicious. Thanks for sharing.
You do have a ways with words. I love the write-ups. Sometimes I understand the medical terminology/jargon and most of the time don’t. But always makes me smile in the end. And always wonder how you can find time to juggle everything.
Time management — something not in my blood. But in the process of doing a transfusion(how do you like my med-talk, lol).Anywayz, the white bean dip is looking fabulous and perfect/healthy option for a movie-night.
What a delicious dips, I suppose it is healthier too.
I had a recent failed experiment with white bean dip, but this one sounds simple and delicious. I’m totally going to make this to redeem my bean dip failure.
i couldnt decide if i wanted to go on this trip where I neeed to know where the exits where or if i wanted to hop a train to your casa to get a whiff of said dip.

White bean dip is my go to snack that I always bring with me to parties. Everyone loves it!
Feed this to me and I’ll turn off my iPod and cell Phone!
I love beans and I bet this is irresistible.
Nice job on the pita! I haven’t made it in a long time – flatbread yes, but not pita. More and more I’m thinking I need to buy that book…
The bean dip sounds very tasty and pita goes with anything.

There was a woman at the park the other day, juggling headphones, wires, portable tv screens…all while her 3 year old was about to walk into the street. Hello.
Anyway, white beans. Love ’em. I have so many cans of cannellini beans and butter beans on hand, just in case a recipe comes along… just sayin’.
Ya know…I never did meet a white bean & rosemary dip that I didn’t love.
I am loving that dip and the homemade pita bread… perfect for movie night!
I need to try this…I love white beans just never had them as a dip
Great post, Joanne! This dip looks amazing. I would never have thought to add those warm spices like cinnamon and ginger, but they sound fantatic in there!
This is a fun post!!!Love bean dips!!!This looks delicious.
Lovely post!!, dip looks amazing with pita bread!!, Mmm.., perfect for a movie night
see, now i wouldn’t be able to focus on any movie if a dip like this was anywhere near me. it’d have my undivided attention. 🙂
Love the bean dip and the pita bread. Nice photos. The bean dip certainly sounds different with the cinnamon and cardamom.
Your posts always make me laugh. I wish there was a way to get your 11 year old to quit following you around the house talking incessantly. If you hear of anything, let me know. I want it off for at least 30 minutes!
This bean dip would not last long around me. Love the flavors!
Oh, I do love movie night, Joanne! 🙂 So fun! This bean dip is splendid!!! I will try it very soon. 🙂
Great post and photos.
You’ve been so good with the HBinFive! And the yeast! I’m pretty sure in the past two weeks I’ve both killed and neglected yeast. Ugh. Terrible, I know. This dip looks great too! Cinnamon, cardamom, and beans sound like an interesting combination!
I love your dip and your the pita. Both are splendid. I hope you are having a great day. Blessings…Mary
I’ve never made a bean dip with all those warm spices before. The addition of cardamom sounds so tasty. I bet this was delicious with your homemade pita bread, but I really love that you dipped the sweet potatoes in the dip;D Great choice for movie night!
Oh, this is a great looking dip. I love white bean dip, but never make it for some odd reason.
Interesting one, never heard abt these 2 dishes but am sure must be awesome…
Joanne, very good bean dip dear perfect for breads. both the recipes are new n delicious.
I love the bean spread/dip..they are great with Chinese steamed bread too.
My one issue with the hummus that I normally make is that I don’t always have tahini on hand… this is a great option if I happen to be out.
This dip looks really good! I need to try to make my own pita bread too!
I have been craving hummus this week! Thanks for the inspiration 🙂
I have seen this white bean dip before and I am tempted! Yours has the spices I like so next time , I am gonna’ make it! Love the pita you served with it.

You are hilarious, Joanne. Just too damn funny cut it out, people will wonder why I’m laughing alone in my office.
Hey Joanne, I can’t keep up with your posts, girl! I’m not on-line enough I guess??
You know, I don’t know how you do your post and your studies-amazing! I was showing your blog to my Cauldron Boy and he was amazed too. He went to law school and business school at the same time, which I’m thinking is equivalent to med school (not either one alone though). He said he never would have been able to do all this…do you sleep (smile)?
This looks wonderful by the way-I love white bean dip.
This bean dip looks wonderful Joanne! I will have to definately try this soon!
This is a perfect movie night snack! Pita with bean dip is one of my favorites. Now, I want to make homemade pita!
ooh, love your addition of cinnamon and cardamom! way to kick it up a notch 🙂
Oh man, that sounds delish! I love all things dip. Did I miss the pita recipe?
I could definitely snuggle up to a bowl of this for movie night! And homemade pita is like the icing on the cake. I don’t think I’d be able to pay attention to the movie…
Discman!! How about Walkman??? Way to date yourself, Jessie. 😉
I like how you allowed us to just have tantalizing peeks of your delicious bean dip and pita bread long before the recipe so that we were salivating all over the place in anticipation and making a mess. Way to go, Joanne.
I love the Black Eyed Peas! This looks like a great dip. I should take your recommendation and make homemade pita one day.
This white bean dip and turkish pita rocks! Not only is great for watching chick flicks, but for breakfast, lunch and dinner too.
I am making the bean dip this weekend!
lol.. Mr. Spock approved 🙂 I am still laughing over it. Lovely white bean dip btw, would go perfectly for a movie night and yes, I like that Black Eyed Pea song too.. so positive!
White beans are my favourite legume for making dips. Love the sweet spices that went into your version. I’m gonna have to try this the next time I find myself spending a night with Netflix
This looks and sounds delicious! It helps too that it’s good for you ;). I’ve been looking for a dip for my 2 huge bags of carrots in the fridge so I’m definitely going to have to give this a try. And just for the record, I would watch your made for tv movie or read your blog, but only if you promise to include lots of food!
talk abt a healthy snack…i could inhale that bean dip in record time…whether with netflix or without.
Great photos. I love bean dip of any kind and think it beats out other movie treats. 😉
This is a great post with wonderful photos. I loved the idea of a bean dip. I’m definitely going to try this. Thanks.
Cardamom is my new favourite spice and never thought of using it in a dish like this. Can’t. Wait. To. Try. It. Out! 😀
Few things are better than freshly baked pitas with homemade dip.
And I too love that BEP song, in fact I’ve got it as my ringtone. But I’m not a cellphone addict. Promise…
Am I allowed to talk now? I can?
Yum.
Delicious! Beautiful photos! Your Turkish-style pita bread looks great!
Great collage and post. I always enjoy reading your posts. Great presentation of your bread as well.
Great job thanks for sharing!!!
Yummy yummy looking! Great recipe inclusion!
Your bean dip looks wonderful! I foresee a movie night in my future. Thanks for the recipe!
The did looks delicious! I love the mix of spices and the pita looks yummy too!
I love all the spices in this – it sounds very well balanced. I make dips with chickpeas all the time but should use white beans more often!
The dip sounds just heavenly, and very unique. Thanks so much for posting it, I think I’ll use it this coming weekend for a baby shower. I did enjoy using this simple bread, wasn’t it great?
Mmmm..I love me some Black Eyed Peas! Great post, great photos, great bread.
I made this yesterday. I followed the directions exactly, and my friends and I agreed that it was alright, but it didn’t wow us. I decided to add the juice of about half a fresh lime, and the rest of the dip was immediately devoured. It made a HUGE difference! A little lime or lemon juice takes it to a whole new level! Yum!
I am hosting my son’s after graduation party next weekend and this dip will be on the menu!
Smile Bunches!
Hehehe good giggle to end my day, beautiful pictures and a tasty sounding treat.
Nice job, thanks for the bean dip recipe.
Now that all sounded good but just as I was reading it the house shook with some excavations going on nearby!!!!! Enjoyed your blog and especially the dip.
