Yesterday.  At 9 pm.  I experienced history in the making.

Or I was supposed to experience history in the making.  But history did not actually happen until around 9:30.

Sometimes history is fashionably late.

014

I was completely unaware of how groundbreaking the evening was going to be.  I think I was doing dishes.  And/or pondering the cost benefit analysis of making my own paneer.  Until Adam burst into my apartment screaming something about how the entire state of the universe was going to be changed in five minutes and why wasn’t Sophie’s computer on yet and no he didn’t want a plate for the calzone he was shoving in his mouth, how could he think about dinnerware at a time like this?!?!?!

Needless to say.  My interest was piqued.  So I moseyed on into the war zone.  Otherwise known as Sophie’s room.

Where I was forced to sit down.  And informed that.  No.  The NIH was not about to announce their recent discovery that chocolate is, in fact, calorie-free.  (Although I swear that data is out there.  Somewhere.)  Nor was PB Loco (my favorite peanut butter company) going to go back into business after mysteriously disappearing earlier this year.  Both of which I would have deemed worthy of such a hullabaloo.

Rather.

The reason we were all plastered to the monitor of Sophie’s computer.  Was that.

LeBron James had requested his own live primetime television special (who DOES that?) to announce which team he was going to sign with for the next six years.  He even handpicked his own interviewer.  And somehow managed to turn what could have been a thirty second statement into an hour long spectacle.

You know things are going horribly wrong when commentators are throwing around shameless sports puns (“stay tuned because coming up, the king will choose his next court!”) and hyperbole (“in the history of the league, we have never seen anything like this!”) like they are going out of style.

Dear ESPN.  They are out of style.  Deal with it.

021

And so.  Against my better judgment.

I watched.

I scoffed.

Then,.  After realizing the genius of this whole situation. I took notes.

007

And now here we are.  You came here today because you saw the words “bacon” and “GIVEAWAY” in the title.

And I have left you hanging for the past nine tenths of a page.  Rambling on about absolute nonsense.  Creating a mountain out of a molehill.

I think I’ve got the hang of it, don’t you?

Kale And Sweet Potato Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing
Serves 3, adapted from Bittman’s Food Matters

2 large sweet potatoes, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 turnip, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces (this wasn’t in the recipe, but it was locally grown and cheap and so I added it)
2 tbsp olive oil
salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 thick slices of bacon
1 red bell pepper, cored and chopped
1 red onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 tbsp peeled, minced fresh ginger
1 tsp ground cumin
1/4 cup pomegranate juice (originally juice from 1 orange, but I had pomegranate juice in the fridge)
1 lb kale (originally spinach, but I found local New York kale at Whole Foods)

1. Heat the oven to 400.  Put the sweet potatoes and turnips on a baking sheet.  Spray with cooking spray and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake for 30 minutes or until crisp and brown outside.

2. Put the bacon in a nonreactive skillet and turn the heat to medium.  Turn once or twice until crisp.  Drain on paper towels.  To this same pan, add 2 tbsp of olive oil.  When it’s hot, add the bell pepper, onion, and ginger to the pan.  Cook, stirring once or twice, until no longer raw.  Stir in the cumin and the crumbled bacon.  Stir in the pomegranate juice and turn off the heat.

3. Steam the kale until wilted.  Mix together with the bacon dressing and root veggies.  Taste, adjust seasoning and serve.

This is my submission to IHCC and to Souper Sundays!

117 Responses to Kale and Sweet Potato Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing…and a GIVEAWAY!

  1. Simply Life says:

Ha, my husband had to watch that live as well!

Oooh I’d want “Clean Food” – I saw it at the bookstore the other day and drooled over every picture. There are seasonal items and I’m pretty sure I’d want to make every recipe in there, which never happens with a cookbook!

  2. Beautiful warm salad with delicious ingredients.

  3. Joanna says:

Goodness gracious, I’m so distracted. I was about to tell you about how good this salad looks and about how I got sucked in by LeBron last night, too, but I just got sucked into watching Gaga on the Today show. I’m apparently a huge sucker for hype and nonsense, but I can’t tear myself away. Her performance was like a sexy scary train wreck and I’m ashamed of myself for sitting through it. I imagine poor Madonna is hanging her head in shame. I’m going to drown my shame in a donut or two, maybe even three.

On that note I would love a copy of The Bread Baker’s Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread. Maybe I can whip something from it into donuts 🙂

  4. Giovanna says:

Oh my goodness that salad looks divine! I love the picture of the red onion, nice composition! Making onions look sexy! Awesome : )

If I were to get a cookbook, I would get Sapori di Calabria by Emilia Fusco. I have heard good things about it and I love learning more about my homeland cuisine!

  5. Kim says:

Lebron James seems like an attention whore. Whoops, did I just say that?

Kale and sweet potato together sounds delicious on it’s own and then toss in a bacon dressing?? I would definitely like to get my lips around that;-)

I’d really like to get Rick Bayless’s new book Fiesta at Rick’s. I don’t have any of his books and I definitely need to remedy that situation.

Bar Symon was absolutely wonderful, some of the best food I’ve had in a long time. I stuffed myself silly and practically needed to be rolled out of the restaurant when we left. When I first walked in I noticed that they were serving the tomato soup with blue cheese. It made me smile since you and Natashya had just made it. It was pretty awkward taking picture in there, but I did manage a few. I’ll probably post about it tonight.

  6. Tasha says:

As usual pretty food with an entertaining story 🙂

For which cookbook I’d most like to have right now, it would have to be Veganomicon, because I’ve been told by several friends that I’m seriously missing out by not owning it. And I’m not one for missing out on stuff if I can help it.

  7. Anonymous says:

Hey Lady 🙂 1. I miss you terribly and had a dream about you last night- it was about thanksgiving when we were kids…. Lol it was funny we were so awkward 2. You need to make a salad with spinach and fresh basil and warm prosciutto, shallot, garlic dressing! It is amazing. You render the prosciutto in a little olive oil, remove. Sautee shallots in that oil. Remove, sautee garlic until lightly toasted. Recombine and add a little more oil if needed. Pour over spinach /basil mix and throw in the micro for 30 secs 🙂 soooo yummy when the spinach wilts a little! Even better with grilled shrimp! That’s all. Love you. Carr

  8. Joanne,

Great salad. You had me at warm bacon salad! Love it.

When you talk about best the cookbooks/per $ spent, I cannnot think you can do better than Jose Andres marvelous, Tapas: A Taste of Spain in America.

Chef Andres is a fantastic restaurateur and cook. He cut his teeth learning at the knee of the master of new age Spanish cooking, Ferran Adria.

This book is an awesome introduction to the art of Spanish Tapas. I think amazon has it now for around $20.00.

    Be well

  9. Yeah, it was indeed a spectacle. With all that drama one would have thought he would be going to NY but he chose Florida..Anywayz, Lovely giveaway.

What book I desire the most right now – Dorie GreenSpan’s “Baking:From my Home to Yours”

Why did I choose this book? From what I hear, this book is well worth the price, well written with loads of practical tips that even a novice dessert baker like me can understand and follow through.

  10. SassyAgapi says:

Lebron is annoying & literally thinks he IS king.
i’m really wanting the ‘Slim and Scrumptious: More Than 75 Delicious, Healthy Meals Your Family Will Love’ by Joy Bauer cookbook.

  11. Like you, I got distracted by the Drama of LeBron James and the Giveaway. I love the Sweet potato and Kale salad with all the lovely bacon dressing.Very colorful.
You know, I was thinking yesterday about how you, I and a few other bloggers(food for 7 stages of life, Fork spoon and knife, Fresh local and best to name a few) who live geographically close by get together in NYC. You get to see me and know my real name. Ha ha.

  12. Mary says:

Nicely done, my dear :-). It’s just we find you too likable and down to earth to feel even remotely miffed about the non-event. The salad sounds great and deserved the lead-in. Have a good day. Blessings…Mary

  13. Nupur says:

Your pictures are to die for!

Thank you for hosting the generous giveaway. The cookbook I would most love to have is “Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone” by Deborah Madison.

Why do I want it? To give it to my dear friend as a gift for her new kitchen. This is an incredible woman, smart, funny and athletic who was never too interested in cooking or baking. All that changed this summer when she asked me to teach me some cooking basics. Together, we have been cooking up a storm. It is pure joy for me to watch her excitement as she kneads bread dough for the very first time, discovers homemade lemonade and finds that she looks forward to eating leftovers for the first time in her life. I’d love to give her an outstanding cookbook to inspire her in the kitchen.

  14. Kristen says:

That 9/10s stalling is a big part of what we love about you! Your introductions are always so entertaining, and we all know you will get to the recipes eventually.

As to the cookbook I’d like…well, I seriously love America’s Test Kitchen, so their Family Baking Book would do for me. They do all the experimenting and testing, so I don’t have to. Generally, their recipes are spot on delicious.

  15. Kelsey says:

i totally want the new Clean Food by Terry Walters!! <3 <3

    mmm kale and sweet potato!!!

  16. Yosha says:

Yes but your ramblings (not what I would call it) are interesting and good read! I don’t want to invest an hour of my time to watch some brat become XXX times more richer and milking it because wow he can throw a ball through a hoop better than the guy next door?! Might be sour grapes here but I am more than a bit disgusted at the amount of money and the pedestal that we put these guys on! Speaking of sour grapes check out the letter the Cleveland owner spewed out! http://www.thestar.com/sports/basketball/nba/article/833973–cavaliers-owner-expresses-outrage-in-open-letter-to-fans

I turned my back on the whole thing, gave my brother the slap on the back of the head and read a book!

Speaking of books I would love “Curried Favors: Family Recipes for South India” by Maya Kaimal for my mom. I got this book from the library and she’s been trying get to most before it’s due. I offered to buy it for her (classic mistake, should have just bought it and claimed it was on sale!) but then I got the typical mom lecture on how I shouldn’t spend money on her, it’s our time etc. etc. Now if I buy it, I am not sure if she’ll be as happy about it! SOOOOO I am in a bit of catch 22…

  17. Mo Diva says:

    EaSY!
    Artrisian Bread in 5 minutes!
i have been eyeing that book for months! and I think deep down i was waiting for Lebron James to be a dummy so you can write this amazingly funny post about a giveaway… and then I in turn would seize the opportunity to write about the cookbook i wanted…
so if i win I will owe it all to Lebron

  18. This salad looks delicious! I just made a sweet potato related salad too… Obsessed!

I’d love to have The Best of America’s Test Kitchen 2010 (or any of the Cook’s Illustrated Cook Books) because I LOVE the magazine and the show and their recipes are always awesome!

    Sues

  19. Pam says:

    Silly LeBron James.

You had me at warm bacon dressing. The salad looks fantastic – love every ingredient!

I would love any artisian bread baking book or Barefoot Contessa cookbook. I am easy.

  20. Erica says:

Another beautiful dish!!!I would love the pioneer woman book or steamy kitchen, but I will be happy with any book 🙂

  21. RamblingTart says:

Oh girl, once again you absolutely crack me up. 🙂 You should so join the cast of Mystery Science Theater. 😉 I know your comments would be marvelously hilarious!

I’d love The Bread Baker’s Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread. I lived in Portugal as a nanny for a while, and every morning we’d get fresh bread from the bakery across the street. I would dearly love to replicate that memory for me, my family and my friends.

  22. Vicky Z says:

Hmm, I’d like to win Artisan Bread in 5 minutes as well! My friend makes bread from that cookbook and mmmm.. it smells so good. Plus, i want my family to be more health conscious and we get to control what ingredients to put in my bread. Not to mention we save the price of a loaf of a bread every week 🙂

  23. Karla says:

You are hilarious!!!!! I totally agree with you on the whole LeBron thing…big deal. New team. New city. Like a million other players haven’t already done the same thing. Blah blah. 🙂

If I were to win a cookbook, I would probably choose any of the America’s Test Kitchen choices…love not only the recipes, but I really love all the tips, tricks, product comparisons, and ingredient insights. I love learning more of the “how” and “why” behind cooking….

  24. saveur says:

You are too funny, Joanne! 🙂

If I were to win a cookbook, I’d love to have New Food of Life. It is a Persian cookbook and I have been exploring Middle Eastern food lately and this one is both gorgeous and includes a lot of history for each recipe.

  25. Sook says:

I’ve been hearing great things about kale lately. I would love to try this recipe sometime. Looks beautiful!

  26. I admit, I was drawn to this post by the word bacon. Who can go wrong with bacon! I love this with the sweet potatoes! Yummers!

Ok, I had never heard of snubbr. I just spent way too much time on their site and almost forgot why I was there in the first place. It’s a great site! I was looking at the raw food cookbooks, while I don’t cook like that all the time, it’s interesting and I would love to start doing that more.

  27. RV says:

Salad looks bold and beautiful. Gorgeous pics Joanne.. The book I would love to have is Best ever Indian cookbook by Mridula Baljekar. I recently found this book in my friend’s home and I instantly fell in love with it. I would love to have a copy of it in my kitchen.

  28. Lynn says:

The salad looks amazing, Joanne. Bacon dressing — yum. As for cookbooks, I’d choose America’s Test Kitchen Family Baking Book. Because “family” and “baking” and “test kitchen,” all in one book? Sounds awesome. It would give me more to blog about, too 🙂

  29. Amy says:

One of my tweets yesterday was “People, you do know that LBJ is just a basketball player, right? It’s not like he can bring back the dead.” It caused quite a ruckus. The hysteria was so absurd…and I yet I was tweeting about it. So I guess he wins. He certainly has a lot more money than I do. BUT, does he know about this salad? I doubt it. That really makes him a loser.

  30. Suman Singh says:

great and healthy salad…perfect with hot summer days..yummie!

  31. Debinhawaii says:

You managed to find a Bittman recipe that worked both bacon and sweet potatoes into a salad and then kale too–you are my hero! Thanks for sending it to Souper Sundays.

I won’t say which cookbook I would like and enter the giveaway as I am supposed to be trying to slow down on my collection. It’s an addiction I tell you. 😉

  32. I really like kale, and that might sound weird but I received a deluge of greens for weeks on end with a former csa. After all of that, kale is one of my favorites. Sounds great in this salad!

  33. Johanna GGG says:

lebron who? what sport is this? how come I have never heard of this guy who is at the centre of the universe???? Though when you get your own chat show I will be queuing up to watch! love the salad though could do without the bacon but kale, sweet potato and turnip that is local and cheap – sounds delicious

  34. I love the colorful salad! my book definitely will be “The Joy of Vegan Baking: The Compassionate Cooks’ Traditional Treats and Sinful Sweets”. My mother in law is a vegan and I always feel sad for her when sits idle during most of the dessert courses. I would really wanna make something nice for her and the rest of the family should enjoy it too. This is the book for me.

  35. polwig says:

I know… Since I am ex Chicagoan I say “stay in Cleveland”.. on the other hand the salad looks great.

  36. Jessie says:

Oh, Joanne, how I have missed your ability to string me along with hints and non-sequitors over half a page (darn China and its random banning!). Giggles 😛 I won’t enter the contest this time because we’ve somehow got more cookbooks than a well-stocked bookstore.

    … wait, chocolate ISN’T calorie-free?? :O

  37. I love the combination of ingredients you used for this salad especially sweet potato. Using pomegranate juice is such a health choice as compared to mayo. I’m totally fall in love with it. Don’t mind to have it everyday. 😉

  38. Raina says:

You are so funny! I thought you were going to say you watched Lindsay Lohan’s courtroom drama..lol I am not really a huge sports fan; so I was totally unaware of the LeBron James spectacle. Not totally surprised, though.

Your salad looks wonderful. The sweetness of the potatoes with the savoriness of the bacon sounds oh so good.

Wow! Choosing a cookbook is tough. There are so many that I want, but I would love Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day by Zoey Francois and Jeff Hertzberg, M.D. because I see all of the wonderful breads being made by the bloggers who participate in HBinFiv.

  39. Christina says:

AHAHA, that Lebron story is hilarious! The last picture of the salad is so pretty, like just out of a magazine!

For a cookbook, I’d love to get Once Upon A Tart. The story of how the authors, Frank and Jerome, met and formed their business is classic, and the entire cookbook is interspersed with little stories of how the recipe came to be, and memories from them. By the end of the cookbook, which almost reads like a story, you feel as if you know them both! The recipes are creative and their flavor combinations are unique and delicious.

  40. This salad looks delicious. Love your photos.

P.s. Just tagged you for an award over on my blog!

  41. I didn’t hear about the Lebron special broadcasting. I think it’s lame too.

The sweet potato salad looks awesome, I like that there are so many different colored veggies in it.

  42. theUngourmet says:

I love the substitution of the kale for spinach in this wonderful salad! I love kale! Tomorrow is my Saturday market shift. I think I’d better pick some up and make this! I’ve not heard of Snubbr until now. It looks like there is a ton of great info over there. I’m going to have to spend some time investigating! 😉

I would love to add The Complete Vegan Kitchen to my collection!

  43. sweetlife says:

love kale, love sweet potato, love bacon…hate Lebron, I think that whole show thing was retarted…and i’m glad he went to miami, my houston rockets don’t nedd him, ha

Hmm I’m here at your blog you like symon, I’d pick up a michael symon book….

  44. Nadji says:

En France, il fait très chaud. Ta salade, aussi bonne soit-elle, est la bienvenue.
    See soon et bon weekend.

  45. katiez says:

So is this LaBrown Jimmy person someone important? I’m afraid, over here, we haven’t heard of him. I could Google I suppose…. but that would take both effort and a true desire to know.
On the other hand…. love the salad. I’m going to do it with chard… have a lot of chard at the moment.

  46. Donna-FFW says:

I have never heard of the basketball player before yesterdays news, now I know everythingg bout him but the size of his well johnson:)

I’d like a cookbook for my hubby.. The Barbeque Bible by steve raichlan.

    Fantastic salad, btw!

  47. Pam says:

Funny story! I’m so over James and glad he didn’t sign up with the Chicago Bulls. No way can he compete with Michael Jordan’s record! So good he went to the Miami Heat and he doesn’t need a special on TV either!

Your salad looks delicious! Anything with bacon has to be great!

Great giveaway! I’d love to have a copy of The Flavor Bible by Page and Dorenburg about pairing different flavors.

  48. Louanne says:

Such a beautiful salad – love sweet potatoes combined with savory flavors.

  49. This is a great salad, love that the ingredients are diverse & warm. Of course you had us all at “bacon!!” xxoo

  50. Marcia says:

Mmmm…kale salad with sweet potatoes and bacon. This is a recipe I might just have to try. Need to break out of the kale chip rut.

Cookbooks…I have a three shelf bookshelf of only cookbooks. And this one is a big one, have to get rid of the phone book to fit it on there, but “How to Cook Everything” by Mark Bittman. It was a toss up between this and the vegetarian version. But I was on vacation visiting family, and my father in law had this book.

“Fun” for me at other peoples homes is sitting down and reading their cookbooks. I know. It’s a sickness. But I love Bittman’s recipes. I’ve tried several from other sources. And with a book called “How to Cook Everything”, I can get rid of ALL my other cookbooks, right?

    (ha ha)

  51. Stella says:

Hey Joanne, Good Morning! You are so funny-your wit never fails to please and surprise. And this salad looks delicious. Oh crunchy bacon, how I do remember thee with spinach………

  52. hey you. call me next time something like that comes up.

didn’t get ANY SLEEP LAST NIGHT EITHER! sucked. ASSSSSS.

i know. gonna rock the short shorts for….the men of the world at teh beach. I WILL BE CALLING YOU DURING THIS..HANGOUT.

  53. The entire LeBron episode struck me as very kindergarten of him. He was like, “Look at me, look me, look at me.” 🙂

Speaking of Bittman, I am in desperate need of his How to Cook Everything. Work has been nutty for the past few months and there have been far too many nights when I’ve come home (at 9 p.m.), stared in my fridge, and determined that cereal (and yes, sometimes a Pop Tart) is the best option for dinner. His recipes are simple and don’t require braising for ten hours or the use of flavored foams and I figure, even an exhausted girl can whip up a fabulous salad like the Bittman one you made. Sure beats Cap n Crunch for dinner 🙂

  54. Oh that Lebron. Everyone loves their media attention, right? Let’s give attention to things like sweet potatoes though because they are the best veggie in all the land. And that is not hyperbole!

  55. elra says:

Love the kale in there Joanne.

  56. Catherine says:

This looks wonderful Joanne! I’m having a giveaway too! Head over to my blog to check it out!
    Cheers & happy eating~

  57. girlichef says:

Omg, I love sweet potatoes and bacon together…one of my favorite combos. This sounds totally awesome!! Okay, I’ll get back with a cookbook I want comment. (hard choice since I want them all)…

  58. great salad and Le Bron is a clever boy he he

  59. girlichef says:

    Helllooooo, I’m back.

After a full ten minutes of deliberating, I’ve come to the conclusion that I NEED the book jam it, pickle it, cure it by Karen Solomon. The reason is pretty simple…to keep me from having to return my copy to the library without first owning a copy. I’ve totally fallen head over heels for this book. I want to make every single thing (no exageration) inside its covers! I’ve made my first…but I keep reading it over and over and caressing the pages. I’ve renewed it once on my library card (one renewal per card is allowed). So I figure I have 4 other people in the house with library cards…renewable once on each card. So, at 3 weeks each…that’s about 3 more months I can potentially “keep” this book after my time is up…which is 2 more weeks. Of course, I’m hoping I can start all over again with my card after I’ve used each of theirs. So…I am desperate to own my own copy to save me the hassle of juggling library cards and renewals for the rest of my life. Cuz that’s how long I want to keep this book.

    Thanks for the chance!!! 😉

  60. Alisa says:

I always love your posts, they keep me giggling, and I never show up just for the title!

I’m having a Snubbr giveaway too right now! Can I enter this one – I hope so – I’d go for the Primal Blueprint Cookbook.

I’m linking to this post tomorrow for this awesome recipe, as I’m doing a post on my second blog on kale and collards.

  61. Katerina says:

Mastering the art of French cooking would be my choice since I want to acquire a book of Julia Child. As far as LeBron I didn’t know him since today, but to be honest with you I could continue living my life just the same without this knowledge. Thanks for the giveaway.

  62. I have been wanting Madhur Jaffrey’s classic “Indian Cooking”. Long terrified of the complexity of Indian food, I’m ready to dive in! I thumbed through a friend’s copy of the book and Madhur Jaffrey makes it seem so doable and yet so authentic. My best friend growing up was Indian and I remember the smells in her house. I want my kitchen to smell like her mom’s always did!

  63. Debbie says:

Joanne, your kale and sweet potatoes look delicious. Kale is one of my favorite vegetables. I would choose the Bittman book “How to Cook Everything.” The title alone explains why I would choose this!!!!

  64. izzyy says:

Sweet taters are, most definately, in my top 5 fave foods of all time. Awesome in sweet and savoury dishes – what is NOT to love?! 😀

I’d LOVE to check out “Sweet Freedom” by Rikki Heller. I’ve developed some nasty food allergies over the years, and my parents have their own health issues, so that book looks like it would be aimed towards my family!

    izzyy
    xoxx

  65. Biren says:

What a great looking salad and bacon makes it look even better!

I would like to have “Japanese Hot Pots: Comforting One-Pot Meals” by Tadashi Ono and Harris Salat. I love Japanese food and Japanese hotpots make delicious and nutritious meals.

  66. Cynthia says:

    Excellent one Joanne! 🙂

  67. Chef Dennis says:

    Hi Joanne
When you have time please stop by my blog, I have some awards for you if you would like them!
    Dennis

  68. Katerina says:

I am sorry Joanne. I was so tired last night, I totally forgot to tell you that this salad looks great.Only recently have I discovered warm bacon sauce. I have to say it is an excellent compliment for a salad.

  69. Your kale and sweet potato salad look so much more interesting than which court LeBron decided to grace!

What a wonderful giveaway for any food blogger! I would love to have The Splendid Table. Since my son-in-law is an expert in northern Italian cooking, I need to keep him interested in coming to dinner! Maybe this cookbook would help me succeed.

  70. I didn’t see the LeBron thing but apparently (sadly) it was a big deal. Honestly, I don’t know why the team owner got so worked up about it. I’m pretty sure he is a grown man who can do what he wants and go where he wants. Meh.

But. You did have me at bacon. I haven’t had any in so long! This looks like it might be a good hearty fall salad. I’ll have to try it when sweet potatoes are in season. Yummy.

And cookbooks. There are so many that I covet. If I had to pick one it would be Joy of Cooking. No kitchen can be complete without it, and I want my own copy, damn it!

  71. Julie says:

Well crap, am I supposed to be clever for the judges? I got no cleverness in me right now (12 hour shifts will do that for ya!) but I’d really love the cookbook called “Now Eat This” by Rocco Disomething.
    Did somebody say bacon??

  72. PJ says:

such a colorful and delicious salad, Joanne! i love sweet potato in any form, particularly in salads, i have got to try this one soon.

  73. gotnomilk says:

This salad sounds absolutely perfect. I’m bookmarking it for a try in the near future. Great photos!

The Splendid Table has been on my list….

  74. Barbara says:

No, you caught my attention because you said bacon AND sweet potatoes in your title! 🙂 My two favorites.

BTW: I live in Florida and I KNOW why LeBron moved here.

Great giveaway, Joanne. I mean who doesn’t need another cookbook??
I have always wanted Nigella Express, Her recipes are unusual yet easy to make.

  75. Joanne

That salad is so unusual; I have never had kale (except for the time when I made disgusting kale chips) and would like to try them finally; as far as the sports world is concerned, like the French say, “let them go fry an egg”

  76. Chris says:

A local restaurant here has a warm bacon/honey dressing as their house dressing and it is heavenly. I’ve come close to replicating it. This one by Bittman sounds delicious too!

That onion shot you did is gorgeous, Joanne!

    Lebron….meh.

  77. Julie says:

i would choose one of the baking cookbooks in hopes of baking something good enough to get lebron to come back to new york. not that i care if he’s on the knicks or anything but i just want my brother to stop crying.

  78. Loved the recipe,looks so beautiful…very colourful…

  79. Dear Joanne,
Happy Sunday Morning and thank you for stopping by my blog. I am so happy to know there is one tree (fig) in my backyard that I can’t kill. This dish of yours is BEAUTIFUL and looks so good. It is time for me to try kale. I am embarrased to say I never have.

Oh gosh, well for a cookbook, it would have to be Tyler’s Ultimate: Brilliant Simple Food to Make Any Time. Three reasons: I love his style of cooking, I cook a lot of his recipes and the ingredients are easily accessible. Everything I ever cook of his gets rave reviews!!

Wish me luck, I would love this book to add to my collection. I predict lots of well worn, splashed pages!! ~LeslieMichele

  80. I love, love, love kale and sweet potatoes! But warm bacon dressing? Swoon. Michael Symon’s cookbook is high on my wish list…Thanks for your sweet comments on my Anniversary post…xo.

  81. Lori says:

This salad sounds delicious! I love your switch to kale, and the bacon dressing…yum! The cookbook The Country Cooking of Ireland by Coleman Andrews caught my attention recently and it is high on my list. We absolutely love Ireland and I continue to be intrigued by their traditional cuisine. So comforting!

  82. This kale salad looks just delightful! I’ll have to try it (sans dressing).

As for the cookbook, I’d have to go with The Rodale Whole Foods Cookbook. I have purchased this for three friends because it has so much useful information, like when different fruits and veggies are in season and the flavor profile for a number of spices and herbs. I love this cookbook so much but have yet to purchase it.

Maybe someone will pick this as the winning entry and make me a happy man?

  83. Zoey says:

    That salad looks yummy =)

I’d like “Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day: The Discovery That Revolutionizes Home Baking” I’m a college student who has her own apartment (with roomies of course, but no parents!) for the first time and I’ve got my very own full kitchen to work with. I’d love to be able to put it to good use making delicious easy breads that will also be easier on my budget!

Good luck to everyone who entered!

  84. After I finish eating your salad, I will sit down and enjoy a delicious cake or pie from American’s Test Kitchen’s Baking Book. Their recipes are reliable, explained well and have variety. From what I have seen, the ingredients are usually available which makes it a practial book to have. I will even share my cake with you but I do need the cookbook for that.

  85. Faith says:

I love salads that have a good mix of roasted and raw veggies…and the bacon dressing on this one makes it even more fantastic!

As far as cookbooks go, the one I want (but am having trouble finding) is an old Betty Crocker cookbook (I think it was published in the ’70s or ’80s) that my mom used when I was a kid. She made tons of classic recipes out of it and it had the best recipe for chocolate chip cookies! 😉

  86. Kerstin says:

That bacon dressing sounds like it would make everything it touches addicting!

I’ve been baking cakes for each of my lab member’s birthdays, so usually at least one per month, and would love to get Sky High Cakes – they have some inspiring flavor combos and I have to keep things interesting!

  87. Eliana says:

You def made me at bacon 🙂

As for which book I’d want – I kinda want the Cake Mix Doctor book. I know I’m “made from scratch” biggest cheerleader. But I’d like to test out recipes from the book for all of my readers who still think they can only bake from a pre-made mix.

  88. Katy ~ says:

Hugs! Not entering the giveaway, but wanted to say your recipe looks positively divine!! I’ve admired and longed for many of your foods, but I must say, this one is my favorite. Oh my gosh, I want this!!

  89. sophia says:

I don’t think I need any more cookbooks..but LOVE this salad! Kale and sweet potato is such a great combo…and who can deny warm bacon dressing?!

  90. Bridgett says:

This is a great use of each ingredient in a unique way. Very impressive.

  91. Pierce says:

    Wonderful post…LOVE bacon (who doesn’t!).

Hmmm..toughie for the cookbook. I love the America Test Kitchen series, the ones by Cooks Illustrated and would like very much to have one of their cookbooks on Italian cooking.

  92. grace says:

oh lebron. i waffle between being disgusted and impressed. 🙂
i would like the cake bible by rose beranbaum. i would like this book because i’m convinced that simply by holding it in my hands, my cake prowess will be magically enhanced.

  93. Nicole, RD says:

Oh, Lebron…what a ruckus you’ve caused. Good luck, dude. Calorie-free chocolate would’ve been way more exciting news 🙂

  94. Mo 'Betta says:

‘Sweet Freedom: Desserts You’ll Love without Wheat, Eggs, Dairy or Refined Sugar’ would be AWESOME to win since my 2 year old has multiple food allergies (eggs being one) and my husband is diabetic. I am trying to cut out as much refined sugar in my diet as well as my children too – but do not want to deprive them of tasty desserts! Love your blog, pics make everything look fabulous!

  95. Mo 'Betta says:

Just wanted to add that I saw on your profile that you would like to do cancer research one day…I so hope you do! My Dad just had a bone marrow transplant for the treatment of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (he’s +31 today!) and it would be so wonderful if a cure for all cancers could be found. It has, and will continue to be, a long, difficult road…If anyone is interested in becoming a bone marrow donor – check out http://www.marrow.org 🙂

  96. Carolyn Jung says:

OK, I shamelessly admit that I did read every word because of the mention of “bacon.” Hah. As you can tell, it doesn’t take much to get my attention. 😉

  97. What a beautiful salad! I’m so jealous. I could use something cool and refreshing. I’m seriously contemplating the sushi place down the street. By the way, I bought sugar but no flour because I wasn’t entirely sure I could use up all the flour. So.. lots of spoon desserts for the next few weeks. Date soon?

    xoxo

  98. Joanne, you have outdone yourself again:D

  99. Love this colourful salad, the warm bacon dressing sounds super.
Joanna, the photos are flawless. Perfect!

  100. Marisa says:

Yeah, you got me at bacon. So will it be wrong to have a second lunch so I can indulge in that craving now?

  101. Shannon says:

my my, you do have the hang of it 😉 lol, but at least it’s a winner of a salad!!

i’ve had go dairy free and the vegan scoop on my list for awhile…

  102. Jeannette says:

I’m not a big fan of bacon. As a matter of fact… I can’t really stand it. But the salad looks great anyhow!

As for your fab giveaway… I’d have to go with Ad Hoc at Home. It is an all around book that I have heard nothing but raves about!! I finally have a great handle on baking, now its time to fine tune my cooking skills!! ($28.47 on amazon)

  103. tigerfish says:

A classic Italian pasta cookbook sounds interesting to me. Maybe Giuliano Hazan’s Thirty Minute Pasta: 100 Quick and Easy Recipes (< $20 in Amazon)?

  104. I’d like to try Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day. I’m not one to shy away from a baking challenge, but I just think of breads as taking so long to make!

  105. Haha yes you definitely got the hang of it. 😉 But I think your blog posts are more interesting than listening to LeBron James! I would love Baked: New Frontiers In Baking.

  106. I have never been fond of kale, but you make it look so good I may have to give it a new try.

As for the cookbook, The America’s Test Kitchen Family Baking Book looks like fun.

  107. spamwise says:

    Looks positively divine.

Peppers aren’t due in for another two months, otherwise I’d be all over this in a heartbeat.

  108. Cristie says:

Everything about this salad is just wonderful! I am going to make this!! Love it, love it! I’m sort of on a kick with sweet potatoes, just another way to use them and something I hadn’t thought of.

What a fun cookbook to think about holding in my hands . . .

  109. Lovely recipe
would love to get this book

  110. Bonnie says:

Love the salad. It looks pretty and …healthy. I don’t know how you find the time to make it, let alone eat it.

I’d love Bread Baker’s Apprentice. Love to make bread and I’m almost done with ABinFive and HBin Five. Need some new recipes.

  111. Cara says:

Awesome salad! I’d definitely go with one of the vegan cookbooks since vegan cooking is something I would like to experiment with more. I don’t think I’d ever become one, but I’m sure there are plenty of great applications for the rest of us!

  112. Danielle says:

Who does he think he is? The best athlete in history? seriously…(eye roll)
Ok…Nigella Lawson, How to Be a Domestic Goddess. I wanted to buy it last month but the bookstore didn’t have it 🙁 and I think it should be every [female, or male, if that’s your thing] foodie’s dream to be a Domestic Goddess.

  113. jane says:

Very happy to find your blog, my fellow med student!
I would love to win a copy of Anna Thomas’ book Love Soup. Because I do.

I’d love to receive How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. I’ve been hearing how helpful and wonderful his recipes are, and I’d love to find out for myself. I’m still a newbie at food blogging, and hopefully this book would help me to refine my techniques, and my readers could learn along with me!

  116. momgateway says:

Breads have always been a problem for me so I think I’d like to receive The Bread Baker’s Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread.

  117. Martha (MM) says:

Beautiful dish Joanne. I’m sure I’m too late for the giveaway now but just in case – Bittman’s How to Cook Everything.

I have some giveaways going until July 31 – a $125 CSN giveaway at Menagerie and another for $60 at Seaside Simplicity. Gotta love CSN! 🙂
