vday flowers

1. I like to think I’m not one of those needy girls who demands things on Hallmark holidays. But get me a nice bouquet of flowers and a (small) box of expensive chocolates and I’m set. (And I won’t make you sleep on the couch. Ahem.)

2. And since the.boy bought himself a box of Russell Stovers, I refused to share my fancy stuff. All’s fair in love and dark chocolate.

3. The.Boy and I have this vow to NEVER EVER go out on Valentine’s Day because UGH the people and the love and the bad service and the overpriced food. Who needs that? So instead we went out on Sunday for dinner at Sons of Essex, Groupon-style. Which meant I got drunk on my two (awesome) cocktails and then ate this WHOLE SKILLET of truffle mac and cheese as my appetizer. And then dinner. And then dessert. And then the.boy rolled me home.

4. I got my second Stitch Fix yesterday and it was LIKE CHRISTMAS. Which, with all this snow around, is quite fitting. I took one look at these skinny jeans and they looked SO tiny that I was sure they wouldn’t fit because, hi, I ate everything this weekend.

5. And then they did. And then I married them.

6. Speaking of marriage, is it bad luck to make my wedding cake for my birthday next week? Please send help.

7. I made my first fluffy pancakes this weekend. And they were whole wheat. Totally felt like I was winning at this whole wedding diet thing.

8. But…then I barely left the house on Monday and my Fitbit almost staged a mutiny. You would think walking from the couch to the kitchen five trillion times would add up to more steps, but no. It’s actually just a pathetically low number that I am too ashamed to tell you.

9. Case in point, I showed The.Boy and HE LAUGHED. And he’s not exactly mr. fitness over here.

10. Can we talk Downton (spoiler alert!). So did Bates do it…or not??

  1. Do it! About the wedding cake, I mean. I still haven’t picked out mine. I guess it doesn’t help that I’m in NC and my wedding is in NJ.
I love that your guy bought himself a box of chocolates. It reminds me of the movie “Saved.”
“hillary faye, you bought them for yourself so it doesn’t count!”

  2. debbie says:

I totally agree with you about Valentines Day. We also went out on Sunday! So much better and less crowded.

  3. Isn’t it amazing how happy chocolate and flowers can make us??

  4. Beth says:

You are marrying one awesome man if he buys himself his own box of chocolates. No sharing – I love it!

  5. We’re pretty good at picking out the restaurants that will be totally dead on Valentines day. Indian buffet? Check. Vegan restaurant? Check. It just doesn’t seem like a loving day if I make dinner at home and yell at Josh for 20 minutes to wash the dishes 😉

Downton– I’m not sure if I hope he did or hope he didnt. If Mr Green is that skeezy, there was probably a dozen more men waiting in line to push him in front of a car, right?

  6. We stayed in on Valentine’s Day and went out on Sunday evening too!
Glad you enjoyed your next Stitch Fix! I need to give that a try…

  7. Your Valentine’s Day sounds like it was so fun! – we don’t like to go out on the actual day either…total nightmare! Also, aren’t fluffy pancakes THE BEST?! Golly, I love them. Have a nice end to your week!! xx

  8. Monica says:

Love the chocolate talk – hope you are enjoying your chocolates. It’s the best part of Valentine’s Day in my book. : ) I also made some good fluffy whole wheat buttermilk pancakes recently. The recipe is very similar to the one you used, minus the bananas…brown sugar adds a deep sweetness and a lot of baking powder seemed to be the trick. Happy wedding planning!

  9. Going out on Vday is the pits! Much better to wait a few days. I agree with your chocolate choice. I say why eat the extra calories if it’s not the good stuff?lol.

  10. Kinsey says:

As much as I want to think that Bates didn’t do it, I’m pretty sure he did! I also think he was behind Vera’s death, even though I love Anna too much to want him to leave. Although the story line I’m most interested in is Edith and her little “foray” to Switzerland. I can’t wait to see!

Also, do you watch Call the Midwife? It’s also on PBS and is a fascinating show about midwives in 1950s East End London. It’s perfect for Downton Lovers!

  11. Go ahead and make your wedding cake for your birthday, I don’t know of any bad luck involved in that. It sounds fun!

I totally love that your fiance bought himself chocolates so he wouldn’t be tempted to eat yours. That, my friend, is love.

  12. Margarita says:

Make the wedding cake, better to know what to expect. 🙂 I made the best pancakes last weekend too and after several experiments found that beating the egg whites until they form peaks is the secret. I like the late Valentines date idea… We like staying in and getting drunk at home. Haha! By the way, DFJ baked me a pink chiffon cake (made with beets and strawberries)… I can’t even believe he pulled it off.

  13. sandra says:

Historically, Valentine’s, New Year’s Eve and my birthday all hold this magical element of disappointment for me. All about expectations, nothing about reality. I’ve learned to ignore it.

  14. SallyBR says:

Ashamed to confess. We went out for Vday. Had one of the busiest working days that Friday, so be it. We normally do not go out, but… it was insane, involving a crew that made a video of our lab to get into the university website… we played Hollywood… fun, but pretty stressful if you ask me.

  15. danielle says:

I say make the cake and enjoy it!

  16. cheri says:

We always eat at home on Valentines Day and go out the week before. So dinner the week before and flowers and chocolates the day of is kind of the plan. And yes I kind of believe Mr Bates is very capable of pushing Mr Green to his demise, he seems a little too mysterious to me.

  17. Oh Joanne its all so SWEET !!! Go for it – make the cake! Have a great day!

  18. Congrats on your fluffy pancakes! And thanks for reminding me I need pancakes right now – even though i downed a bowl of oats followed by another bowl of grapes!
That pistachio cakes sounds fabulous – so are you gonna make it for your bday? There’s this bakery in Brooklyn called Fabiane’s that makes the best pistachio cake and pistachio creme brulee. One year they made a 3 layer pistachio cake for my sis with raspberrys and white chocolate frosting!

  19. Everything about Wed. Coffee talk cracks me up! I totally look forward to reading it! My husband and I are the same exact way with Vday and I used to work in a restaurant and they would jack all the prices wayyy up for the holiday. Ridiculous. Haha wedding dieting – I was the worst at that. I had a fitbit though and still use it – love it!

  20. Heather says:

Leonidas are by far my favorite chocolates… thinking about them makes me want to order some ASAP.

  21. Joanne C. says:

    1. Flowers and good chocolate = WIN
    2. Gift of Russel Stovers = COUCH
    3. Agreed, Valentines Day dining out is a no go. That truffle mac= DROOL
    4. Congrats on the skinny jeans.
    5. You’ll be very happy togther
    6. Wedding cake = GO FOR IT!
    7. Fluffy whole wheat pancakes = DOUBLE WIN
    Great post with good laughs!

  22. Fluffy pancake?!!! I need to get on this!

  23. First of all, those pancakes look so rad and I need to learn how to be better at making mine cook as evenly as that. Secondly, I can’t believe you made your wedding cake – how long did that take? Third off all, pistachios are delicious so hell yea make it again!

  24. Meg says:

Love, love your coffee talk on Wednesdays! So glad you’re still loving Stitch Fix. I got my box yesterday, too, and fell in love with the top I may or may not be currently wearing. I have this weird clothes obsession where I simply must wear new clothes, like, the day after I get them. Or sometimes immediately. But it works for me!

Also, I say go ahead and bake your favorite cake. I’m sure it will be amazing, and I don’t know of any marriage-related superstitions that would make that bad luck! 🙂

  25. Absolutely make that cake…it will be perfect that you can enjoy your favorite cake for two celebrations.

  26. gloria says:

These flowers are beautiful and Im sure your cake will be amazing Joanne!
The most I love the boy (your boy) you laugh with him, that is sooo important (believe me dear)
    xxxx

  27. gloria says:

yes after all these year I can tell you dont lost your humor sense is wonderful!!

  28. Pretty!!! And that cake? FTW. You must…you really must.

  29. Jenna says:

I am so scared to try stitchfix since I like to HAVE ALL THE CONTROL. 😉

  30. Congratulations on the pancakes

    Happy Birthday

    Make the cake 🙂

  31. Sounds like an awesome Valentine’s and omg all that food sounds ahhhmazing!

  32. Chocolate always make me happy too. I think that you should make the cake.

  33. Moin@Skin says:

This Valentine was same for me like other days. Was busy with other works. Actually I don’t believe in all this special day stuff. Everyday is special if we have love towards each other.

  34. Kate says:

We’ve done Valentine’s Day home and out – and both are kind of disappointing.

  35. Monet says:

We never go out on Valentines Day…especially now that we have a baby! That’s much more of a deterrent than the crowds 😉

  36. Haha, I think I have it beat on low key Valentine’s Days. My boyfriend once gave me an umbrella on Valentine’s day. Now whenever Valentine’s day rolls along, we don’t talk about it so that we won’t need to do anything.
Also, I want to make your wedding cake for MY birthday ;P Too bad it was last month..

  37. Beautiful flowers! And jeans! And pancake success! I relate to those days of scarily few steps, too…sometimes work (and in your case, probably snow) really makes fitness a battle.

  38. Did he buy chocolates for himself too?? Genius. Purely brilliant.
Aaaahhh I have to try those pancakes too. Like right now, they do sound awesome!

  39. there is seriously nothing better than thinking a pair of pants won’t fit and then finding out they fit perfectly! i saw your IG of the jeans and love them!!!

  40. I don’t know if I’ve ever told you–but loooove your writing style. I actually thought about making my own wedding stuff too…J quickly reminded me that it’s madness but you’ve got some great talent and if you did it, I’d totally be rooting for you, Jo!

  41. Shannon says:

oooh, i would make your wedding cake, too 😉

  42. I thought I was “all that” b/c I fit into an OLD pair of jeans that are one of those ‘muchsmallerthanmynormalsize’ pairs. Turns out I was prancing around with a big ol’ HOLE in the butt all afternoon. Moral of the story….always check butt in mirror before leaving the house 🙂

  43. If it makes you feel better, make your wedding cake for MY birthday…it’s also next week. 🙂
Gorgeous flowers…the boy done good. And I’m glad to hear he came home with chocolate!

  44. Reeni says:

I think it’s totally cool that you can make your wedding cake! I would do the same. And Mr. Bates totally did it. I love that man. Even if he is a killer. 🙂

  45. Flowers make everything better. They even help this horrible winter. BTW, ready for polar vortex 10, or whatever it is at this point, this week? I’m not.

  46. Rika @ VM says:

I love reading your Coffee talk moments! I don’t think it’s bad luck to make your wedding cake for your birthday – why not have all sorts of cakes on a special day?! I love fluffy pancakes, too! And I’m not a huge fan of V-Day, we stayed in anyway!
