half marathon

1. Look who ran a half marathon this weekend! And I didn’t even have to bribe him. (Much.)

2. Honestly, he did great, finishing in just under 2 hours! And I’m fairly certain I burned almost as many calories as he did, just from shivering. At least, I hope I did, because we followed this up with chocolate chocolate chip waffles. (<– BRIBE)

3. URRRGGHHH. Taxes. You know that feeling when you think you’re basically done, but then your tax guy calls you up and is like, uh, no you’re just getting started. Yeah, that. Next year I’m going to be so much more organized. Pinky swear.

4. So we are starting season 3 of Breaking Bad. And I basically want to slap Walt upside the head infinity times and spend the rest of my life hugging Jesse. That’s normal, right?

5. Does anyone else think Jesse really should have been played by Eminem? Anyone?! Bueller? (I mean, they’re like the SAME PERSON. Aside from the fact that Em’ is legit from the streets and Jesse is, well, for lack of a better word – a poser.)

6. Have you entered the three giveaways currently going on on my blog right now?! You could be putting a winning entry in for a Whole Foods gift card, a new cookbook, or an iPAD as we speak. Get on it.

7. It is officially mango season. I know, because Whole Foods emailed me to tell me so. What are your favorite mango recipes?!! For when I buy 30 this weekend and need to use them all up in the course of a week because they all threaten to go bad at the same time? (Happens every year.)

8. Yesterday was the.boy’s birthday! He has now finally, after three long weeks, caught up to me in age. My mom swears that his real birthday was my original due date, but I was a crazy early preemie. And he was also a preemie. Somehow, this has made my mother utterly convinced that we are meant to be.

9. Then again, she might just be remembering things incorrectly, because she also likes to spout out propaganda about how childbirth is painless, even though there is much evidence to the contrary.

10. Have you heard of Carrot Cake M&M’s and are they worth me trekking it up to the Target in Harlem to procure them? That is the question. (The.Boy just informed me that this flavor “sounds disgusting”. But what does he know?)

  1. What! Carrot cake M&Ms? Those sound delightful! Make the trek then let me know. Target is a quick 2 minute car ride from my house, but I don’t want to commit to eating a whole medium bag in one sitting if they’re not super amazing.

  2. I would happily try Carrot Cake M&M’s! Yum.
Congrats to the boy on his half marathon!
And I’m glad you stuck w/ Breaking Bad… It’s a crazy show but oh so good.

  3. Love mangoes but have the SAME problem. I always get sucked into buying them in bulk and proceed to throw away half of them.

  4. It’s totally normal to want to snuggle poor jesse. and feed him cookies and keep him away from mean walt.

Congrats on the sub-two half, Mike!

  5. I can’t wait to get my hands on some mangoes! I didn’t know you were a preemie – my twin boys were too!

  6. gloria says:

ah I love this picture of the boy at the marathon! anyway Im sure he ate a lot after this lol (the men sigh!)
about mangoes I adore I think are one of the beauty fruits and smell sexy.
I saved two ripe mangos yesterday and Im not sure how eat!
my daughter live chopped with others fruits.
I love mango mousse, mango Ice cream and fresh mango with some ice cream!
I enjoyed like always your wednesday:)

  7. Emma says:

Happy birthday to the boy and congrats on the half mary! Choc chip waffles sounds exactly what I’d want to eat after running 13 miles 😀
Obviously mango is never in season in the UK, not that I can resist buying a couple every now and again…I love it in my curried chickpea, mango quinoa salad and raw mango coconut tartlets. Coconut and mango are perfect partners!

  8. It’s mango season?!!? Yes. Wish you could spiralize a mango.

  9. Monica says:

Great photo. Congrats to your fiance on the marathon – and happy birthday! I am intrigued (and a little grossed out) by carrot cake M&Ms. And I also got the notice from Whole Foods about mangoes. I started seeing them over the weekend…seems the season starts way earlier than I thought. I’m excited but my husband all the more so – he loves this mango sago cold dessert soup I make with coconut milk. He could eat it continuously throughout mango season if I’d make it for him. : ) The champagne/ataulfo ones are the best.

  10. Carrot cake M&M’s are SO good! I love them. But if you don’t like white chocolate, you might not love them. They definitely are overpoweringly white chocolately! (are those even words?!) Congrats to the.boy! And yay for all the giveaways I had missed one of them! Heading over to enter now 🙂 Have a great wed. Joanne!

  11. Everyone has been talking about this show Breaking Bad, but we have yet to see it! BTW: Happy Birthday to the boy! … and mangos is really not our thing, although we really should start – like we did with kale recently. And, thank you for all the giveaways, I will double check to make sure we entered all of them. Thanks so much! 🙂

  12. Simply Life says:

congrats to him on the 1/2 marathon!

  13. Meg says:

I haven’t had an M&M in a hot minute, but a carrot cake variety is definitely intriguing! I mean, for scientific research purposes. And yeah, taxes . . . good times. Good times for all.

  14. Shannon says:

I recently heard m&m’s described as turds, so I have no temptation towards them whatsoever. hope that helps! hahaha 🙂

  15. Lynn says:

Now I have to try carrot cake m&ms. 🙂 Yum. (I think.) Congrats to The Boy!

  16. Christina says:

Ugh tax season. This one has been awful. Oooo mango season! Salsa time?

  17. LOVE the giveaways!! Also Breaking Bad, Jesse totally coulda been played by Eminem, BUT there is that loveable part of Jessie that Em wouldn’t have.

  18. cheri says:

happy birthday and congrats on running the marathon to your fiancée! have fun figuring out what to do with all those mangoes, I love salads and smoothies!

  19. SallyBR says:

Congrats on the HALF! Awesome! speaking of running, hubby and I had not run in many many months, and even when we did, it was just as a warm up for other exercises. But, when we were in Paris we decided to run the route we used to back in 2002 when we lived there. Must be some Parisian magic, but we ran 5 days in a row, and on the fourth day we completed the full circuit we used to, 5 miles. I could not believe it, it was soooo cool!

I need to baby-sit my knee, but since I’ve been running with the five-fingers it seems to help. No more marathons for me, though… even a half would be too much, I think. I still dream about it

  20. So you know that whole thing about taxes? Just wait until you buy a house! 20 times worse. Also? You’ll end up loving Walt. You will…

  21. sandra says:

Oh your mother is very ready for grandchildren if she’s saying childbirth is painless.

I think I am with The.Boy on the carrot cake M&Ms.

Yes, you will continue wanting to hug Jesse until the very end. At least, I did.

  22. Trisha says:

Your boy is adorable! So exciting that he ran a half on his own. Also, I need those M&M’s immediately. Carrot cake is my favorite!

  23. Mangoes are in season??? My grocery store needs to be told – they are still selling them at $1.45 a piece!
Congrats to The.Boy on finishing a half (Chocolate chip waffles sound like an amazing way to celebrate ) and Happy Birthday to The.Boy!

  24. Kate says:

I thought about you guys this weekend with the marathon going on. Good on The.Boy for doing it all on his lonesome!

  25. Happy Bday to The.Boy! What did you make to celebrate?

  26. Pam says:

Great job to The.Boy! A marathon is a fantastic achievement! Carrot cake m&m’s sound tasty to me.

  27. Way to go to your man! I saw the remnants of the run on Sunday but definitely was not up early enough to catch it!

  28. Happy birthday to your guy, and congrats to him on running the half marathon! He looked exhausted but elated – the man earned those chocolate chip waffles! And almost being in my 8th month of pregnancy, I’ve definitely earned a whole mess of carrot cake M&Ms! Now to get my greedy paws on them…

  29. debbie says:

Congrats and Happy Birthday to the Boy!!! Carrot Cake M&M’s..they sound good to me. Let us know if you try them and like them. I haven’t seen any down here in Virginia. I am just finishing up season one of Breaking Bad and love it!!!!

  30. The one thing I’m allergic to? Mangoes. The world is unfair.

  31. Talia says:

Keep an eye on the the candyblog.net as the author is systematically reviewing carrot cake flavored candy this week.

  32. Kathryn says:

My favorite healthy meal is chicken and veggies!!

  33. bahahhaaa this is hilarious! My mom says childbirth wasn’t so bad either–this is because 1.I was super small (for a fulltime baby) and 2. My brother was a C-section and she was konked out lol

  34. Oooh mangoes! I want one so bad right now. I love making smoothies with them using plain yogurt or kefir.

  35. Congrats to your man on finishing the half, and in under two hours! That is quite a feat.

As for mangoes… we make lassis galore. Just chuck the mango cheeks into the Vitamix (or whatever blender) with yogurt and, if necessary, a bit of water if your yogurt is thick. I top mine with mint or sometimes put orange blossom water inside.

  36. I didn’t buy any mangoes this season in case they ended up over ripe and uneaten!

  37. Hotly Spiced says:

You can take it from me, childbirth isn’t painless. Your mother’s views make me think you must have arrived on the doorstep, delivered by a stork. It must have been a very cold marathon for The Boy to be wearing all that gear. A shame I can’t enter your giveaways! xx

  38. Christine says:

Happy B-day to the.boy…belatedly. Great on the marathon! Love your Wednesday Coffee Talks!

  39. Happy birthday and congratulations on the half marathon to the boy! I’m glad you supported him with waffles 😉 I’m also glad you are logical enough to know childbirth is not painless! Even having never gone through it, I have great confidence in that…

  40. Childbirth hurts. Just sayin’. Congrats on the boy’s marathon…I so wish I could make myself enjoy running. It’s just not happening. Carrot Cake M&M’s? I’ll be on the lookout!

  41. Carrot cake M&Ms? I’m intrigued/disturbed/interested/scared.

  42. Congrats and happy birthday to the boy! Hope you both enjoyed the waffles (and secretly hoping you saved some for me too ahh)

  43. Wait . . . mango season just started??? You’ll have to excuse me while I go to the store.

  44. Yes to mangoes, which are in season here, well always, since it’s always 1 million degrees outside. I NEED to start Breaking Bad. Hooray to The.Boy for being a march baby (hurray to all us March babies!). And about those Carrot Cake M&Ms…they are currently in my cart.

  45. I saw carrot cake M&M in the store too, I am not sure if I want to try them. My hubby and I share the same birthday, but I am a year older than he is.

  46. Kudos for your man running a half marathon! 🙂

  47. Reeni says:

I wouldn’t bother with the M&M’s! The special flavors are usually gross and fake tasting. I was born 3 weeks early too – during a bad snow storm. Congrats to the boy on the race!
