australia babies

1. The.Boy seems to think that if he keeps buying me adorable stuffed animals from Down Under (and Africa), it will get him off the “baby-making” hook. Little does he know, after the wedding. It. Is. ON.

2. But they really are cute, right? We call them: Mr. Koala, Bush Baby, Mrs. Kangaroo, and Joey. I marvel at our creativity constantly.

3. I will really be much more creative with our future babys’ names. Like, maybe too creative. Not “Apple” or “North” creative because we do not have enough money to buy our children friends.  But just creative enough that our kids are “the kids with the cool names”. That’s basically my life goal. The.Boy is not quite as on board, because he just wants to name all our children after our ancestors, but he’ll come around. Even if it requires bribery.

4. So, we started watching Breaking Bad. Like, a few years too late. And…I’m not so into it. Actually, the first few episodes have made me nauseous beyond belief. Is it going to be like this the whole way through?? With, like…HUMAN GUTS SEEPING THROUGH SOMEONE’S CEILING BECAUSE THEY DISSOLVED THEM IN ACID?? Or should I just suck it up and push forward??

5. Basically, I need your (unending) moral support.

6. I’ve been listening to Idina Menzel on repeat. Since 9th grade when my parents went to see Wicked (WITHOUT ME) and casually left the soundtrack on my bedroom floor. And then when I finally saw Wicked for myself my junior of high school. And then when RENT became a movie in 2005. And then when I played the piano for my college’s production of Wild Party. And most recently because, Frozen.

7. If Idina chooses to file a restraining order against me, I will totally understand. Heck, maybe I should file one for her. To keep myself in order.

8. The.Boy just informed me that we can’t eat meat tomorrow. Honestly, I’m not sure why he thinks that is different from any other day around here.

9. After a month of Valentine’s Day followed by my birthday followed by The.Boy’s grandmother’s birthday followed by our anniversary, I am ready to eat salad until The.Boy’s birthday in two weeks. And then, after that, for the rest of my life.

10. If you need me, I’ll be pretending I don’t want to eat all the brownies I plan on sharing with you tomorrow. #savemefrommyself

  1. I just LOLed at #8. I feel like he was testing you:-)

    • Nan says:

I laughed out loud at this one too. It seems so similar to some things my husband says that leave me to wonder.

Your animal names are good, but I live in a boy that has three of the same bear from Build-A-Bear named “Bear”, “Bear”, and “Skelly-ton”.

  2. Simply Life says:

haha, love that you’re going for creative baby names, but not “too creative” – it is a fine line. 🙂

  3. I was not a fan of Breaking Bad at first…but I gave it a chance and ended up loving it! You should give it a chance and watch a few more….

  4. Girl, Idina is a goddess! I love that she is so popular now but I keep saying I’ve loved her since Maureen! So glad she is getting the serious recognition she deserves. As for Breaking Bad, I made it mid-way through season 2 before I dropped it for House of Cards. I’ll probably go back but it is definitely still super intense. I’m not sure the nausea ever really goes away while watching. 🙂

  5. omg that is so cute that you wanna get baby-makin’ right away! So does Michael but…um…we can’t. (dude is gonna be working full time and in grad school and we’ll be in debt over the wedding)–so he’ll just have to wait a little while lol.

I love your cute lil stuffed animals and Frozen and I’m excited for those brownies!

  6. I refused to watch BrBa for the longest time because someone (a chem professor actually) told me about that episode. I was all, “no, that show is not for me, I hate violent t.v.” But then my guy got into it, and he begged me to watch it with him. I grudgingly agreed as long as I didn’t have to watch THAT episode. For several episodes, I thought it was dumb…..and then I got addicted to it.

I love your stuffed animals! So cute. Maybe if you just keep talking about babies, he’ll keep bringing you toys.

  7. I so very much do not want babies that I’ve picked out punishment names to shame any egg out of ever being fertilized. Excalibur Dragon Moon? Yep. It would happen. I looooooved Breaking Bad, but if that scene made you queasy, you may need to just sit this show out.

  8. Oh, Joanne… are your toys hints that your honeymoon will be in Australia??? 🙂

PS. I already have my cool boy’s name picked out: Dexter. How geeky chik is that? 🙂 Thankfully Rob is on board, too! Muahahaha!

  9. hehe, I know you’re a vegetarian, but is The.Boy not one?

  10. Haha so cute! I love these coffee talks Joann! And unique names are super fun – it took me a while to get my husband on board, but finally I did! Also, Breaking Bad, I hear amazing things about it, but I just can’t get into it…

  11. Shannon says:

breaking bad is good, but tough just due to the subject matter. I got into it on a binge while I was sick, but don’t know if I could’ve done it otherwise. I say keep watching… but I still have the last season to watch!

also, I love how you threw joey in there for your stuffed animals 🙂 are you going down under for your honeymoon? or does down under have another reference… ? 😛

    • joanne says:

ha! ::sigh:: no I don’t think we’ll be going to Australia…I’m not a very good flier and I can’t imagine being on a plane for that long without having a panic attack. It all started when one of my friends went to Australia on vacation and promised she would bring me back a koala. When she obviously didn’t, Mike got me the koala…and it’s kind of continued on from there.

  12. Meg says:

Not “Apple” or “North” creative because we do not have enough money to buy our children friends. I laughed out loud at this! I’ll totally admit to having a running doc in my email with names I love for future kiddos — something I revealed to my husband only when I had the ring firmly on my finger. He was mildly freaked out, but he’s coming around. 🙂

    • Karis says:

This too made me laugh out loud. As someone who frequently gets asked about my name, I can tell you there are definitely pros and cons to unique names. I do like my unique first name but it’d be so much better if I had a more common last name, so I wasn’t constantly spelling both names.

  13. Don’t go for original….as someone named Davida I can tell you it SUCKS to have a creative name. It’s pronounced DAH-VEEEEEEE-DAH but I get everything from David-AH, David-EH, DAH-VID-DAH and god only knows what…can you tell this gets me worked up?

  14. SallyBR says:

can I splurge on this Wed coffee talk?

here we go: yes, I am having a crappy coffee while reading your blog. But I am in the airport waiting for my flight to Atlanta, and later today…… PARIS my dear!!!!

one week in my favorite city, work, but fun too (I hope). 😉

Hoping for some serious Spring when we return….

  15. Baby talk?! How exciting! My sister is expecting her first and I think I am more excited than she is! And feel free to send me the brownies. I’ll take one for the team and eat all the brownies so you don’t have that stress hanging over you. I’m a great long distance virtual friend like that 😉

  16. Trisha says:

Ha, love #1. My hubby is frightened by the number of babies on my instagram and blogroll. I can’t help it! Also, I’m giving up sweets for lent, which probably means I can’t read your blog on Friday. your dessert photos = major need for chocolate

  17. Abby says:

Um you officially have the best place ever, there’s a Dunkin right across the street?! I’d weigh a million pounds if I lived there. You and the boy are so cute!

  18. I’m an Idina fan, too. And, I love that as I read this post there’s an ad for her new Broadway show on this page. Must. Get. Tickets. Soon.

  19. I have been on the fence about watching Breaking Bad but after reading “HUMAN GUTS SEEPING THROUGH SOMEONE’S CEILING BECAUSE THEY DISSOLVED THEM IN ACID” I am definitely off the fence – gory I cannot do – I mean I will have to stop eating spaghetti squash after that line!

  20. I am on season 4 right now and its totally addictive!!! If you ever need to discuss, I am your girl 🙂 # 8 – hilarious!!!

  21. Ok so can you please come talk to my boy…he is against baby making right now because of all the wedding debt and my grad school brokeness. But I want babies!! This is not what we talked about before we tied the knot man.
I started watching Breaking Bad over the Christmas break when everyone was going all gaga about it and it is so so gross. I powered through to season 2 coz I thought it will get better but it did not and I moved on to House of Cards and loved that!!! Not going back. Let me know if it gets better 🙂

  22. I’m totally on the (meaning your) baby train too!! EEEEEK! And yes, your baby will have the best name. Use family names for the middle names. Compromise done. AND! I loved Breaking Bad….give it a chance. I think I got really into it in Season 2…but I have a gross mind and body fluids dripping through the floor doesn’t gross me out. I hope we’re still friends.

  23. iscribbler says:

I want the koala! Personally, stuffed animals are so much easier to care for and they stay cute for life! 😉 I don’t mind creative names, but please make them easy to spell. I have a last name that is simple but because it has an extra letter that no one expects, EVERYONE gets it wrong. I’ve taken to automatically spelling it out every time just so they have a chance of getting it right and it’s beyond annoying! Just my view. 🙂 I love your Wednesday posts, btw!

  24. Ooh, can’t wait for tomorrow’s brownies! I’d say carry on with Breaking Bad. We loved loved loved it (and no, I’d say it isn’t as horrendously awful all the way through, but there are a few more really awful moments!) What I loved is the character development. It really makes you think. Having said that, I gave the first three seasons to my best friends and she found it a bit too ‘gritty’ as well, so you’ll have to see … 😉

  25. Kate says:

You name your stuffed animals just like my son. Yesterday “Green Bear” came with him to school. You’ll never guess what kind/color stuffed animal “Green Bear” is…

  26. sandra says:

when I was pregnant I seriously considered Leif for a boy’s name… it would have made him Leif Meadows (makes my husband cringe). In the end my husband chose the name and I love it. As it turns out it is also the name of the first person in my family history to arrive on this continent, in 1645. Weird coincidence.

  27. sandra says:

yeah, unless you like gore and violence you probably wont like Breaking Bad. It does have other, more redeeming qualities, but it’d be hard to get past the façade. What I especially love about it is that it was shot so well – all the angles are perfectly gorgeous, from a design perspective. It has ruined my tv watching, since now I cannot take a badly shot film. I want to see that edge of the picture has been considered in the overall design. A byproduct of blogging?

  28. Lynn says:

lol at the having to buy kids some friends because of their names – that might just be true. 🙂

  29. These talks are my favorite. You’re hilarious. Thanks for the midday giggles. 😉

  30. Heather says:

May I suggest a compromise with the baby names? We chose first names that were semi-unique and used ancestral middle names. 😉

Also – finally someone else who didn’t get into Breaking Bad! I got nauseous after the first couple episodes and just stopped. The same thing with Sons of Anarchy. I keep hearing they’re both great shows, but I have thing with gore. Blech.

  31. Susan says:

Baby names are so hard since you know that little person will have it for the rest of their life! I’m so glad our two daughters still like their names. I just wanted something fairly unique that sounded good with our last name.

Loved breaking bad but it was tough to watch at times – also love Idena Menzel. What a great voice!

  32. Susan says:

You have to pull through with Breaking Bad. There are some gross out moments but it’s completely worth it. I had to laugh about the meat comment from the.Boy

  33. The baby naming thing is so hard! Because I’m sure everyone thought they were being super original when they named their babies Stephanie or Jennifer, but little did they know EVERYONE was doing it. My husband Will’s name has been popular for ALL TIME, which I used to think made it super lame, but I’m starting to come around to the classics. Time will tell. Why I’m thinking about this when I’m not even pregnant, I have no idea. 🙂 Also, Breaking Bad doesn’t really get better. It always made me feel icky but also made me keep watching it. Looking back, it was a very unhealthy relationship.

  34. Pam says:

I only got through two episodes of Breaking Bad too. I much more of a Downton girl! We went with one syllable first names & multi syllable middle names for our kiddos… we live on the edge here.

  35. sandra says:

And, I found the whole chemistry lesson fascinating… I mean who knew that acid ate through a ceramic and metal bathtub, but not through plastic?

  36. debbie says:

I have been meaning to watch Breaking Bad. I’ve heard people say it’s the best show they have ever seen. I want to check it out. I seem to watch everything too late. Like the Sopranos. Ended up watching the whole series on dvd! I do watch Walking Dead though and Bates Motel. They’re both excellent!

  37. Reeni says:

All those gross parts are totally worth it! I stopped after the first few episodes and then started again when everyone was raving about it – I stuck my face in a pillow through the really bad parts. Still had nightmares. 🙂 The more you watch the more you’ll get sucked in because it gets better and better.

  38. alyssa says:

The stuffed animals are too funny. They are clearly going to become a nursery theme at some point down the road 😉

  39. Huh did I just read brownies tomorrow?? SO looking forward to that.
Also, the little kangaroo is just plain adorable ahhhhh <3

  40. P says:

I was wondering why there was a picture of exotic stuffed animals perched on your windowsill :P!

  41. I think The.Boy has the right idea – come to Australia, and *then* make babies! Trust me when I say you do not want a string of long distance (very long distance) flights with children in tow…

If you do decide to stick with NYC baby making, you at least have a good set of toys for them to enjoy 😀

  42. Christina says:

Number 8 is the best thing I’ve heard all day! Ha! I may be avoiding your brownie post, as this cleanse has unleashed a strange unrelenting crave for chocolate…… 🙂

  43. “we do not have enough money to buy our children friends” —HAHAHA!!!

Also–you HAVE to keep watching Breaking Bad. It keeps getting better and better–and you will fall in love with Jesse.

  44. Do you ever actually make a meat dish for him?

  45. Haha, I guess you both believe in bribery. I mean, who couldn’t say no to Bush Baby? :p

  46. gloria says:

Haha I love the boy when he say we can’t eat meat is funny!
Hubby tell me right now, what we eat yesterday? I said Fish and lettuce 🙂
    They are funny.
I love these little cute animals!:)
    Be ok!

  47. I love stuffed animals, perhaps more than I care to admit. I have been wanting to watch Breaking Bad, but that’s me acting like I’ll actually get around to it when I’m still trying to catch up on Oscar movies and my TiVo is threatening not to record Grey’s tonight.

  48. yessss to the babies! seriously-best thing ever 🙂

  49. As always I enjoyed your Wednesday post.

  50. Joanne, WHY are you so funny?! #8. NUMBER 8. #3 has me laughing also, because I don’t think any of us budgeted for buying our kids some friends. And #6, because, I haven’t even watched Frozen yet and somehow this song has not only seemed into my conscious state but my unconscious state where I find myself humming it. She’s too amazing.

  51. Johanna GGG says:

oh I remember the days when giving up meat seemed like some sort of sacrifice – now I would be more upset to have to eat meat – tell the boy you need a wombat to add to your aussie menagerie – now that would be a cute name – ha ha – you really need to look into the boy’s ancestors and find some weird names there to present to him 🙂

  52. Christine says:

Like many of the other commenters, I really had a laugh at “The.Boy just informed me that we can’t eat meat tomorrow. Honestly, I’m not sure why he thinks that is different from any other day around here.” 🙂

  53. OMG. I am so behind! I’ve been so busy that I actually forgot to open my reader this week. GAH. Breaking Bad is so good. It got me through months on the treadmill. I was seriously depressed when I finished the series. Now I’ve moved onto Homeland. Also good!

  54. Jessie says:

I just about died at #3. There isn’t enough money in the world, Joanne. Also, those stuffed animals are adorable, and now I want my own kangaroo.

  55. margarita says:

I love Breaking Bad… the characters are interesting (they grow on you) and there are unexpected twists every time. It is full of suspense, drama, action, and funny scenes here and there. Keep going. It’s a good one. Just make sure to watch a funny YouTube clip for a little bit afterwards to get your mind off it amd avoid creepy dreams.

  56. Courtney says:

I had the hardest time deciding on Clara’s name, but really – it’s hard to go wrong when your last name is Champion. However, I frequently told people (with as much seriousness as I could muster) that our chosen girl name was Wynn. I couldn’t resist.

Also, the meat comment is killing me. That is too funny.
