chocolate cake

1. Remember how my New Year’s resolution was to eat LESS dessert. Well, the universe disagrees. That’s really the only explanation as to why every layer-cake-worthy holiday in my life takes place between February 1st and March 18th, the critical point at which resolutions either become a habit or a future ghost of resolutions past. This yellow birthday cake with chocolate ganache frosting? For my sister’s birthday.

2. Either that, or the universe just really hates my skinny jeans.

3. The.Boy is watching episode after episode of “Did You Know Gaming” on YouTube as I write this. He’s currently enthralled in “Pokemon Part 4”. Apparently I am marrying an eleven year old circa 1998. In fact, I believe the words “you obviously didn’t play as much Pokemon as I did” just came out of his mouth. Said proudly. I cry.

4. After two days of jury duty, I think I need a mental vacation from life. I have so much to say about this treasure of an experience, but – long story short – they dismissed me on the grounds that I have too much medical knowledge in my brain and refused to take their “expert medical witness’s” statements as truth over what I learned in medical school.

5. And there, my friends, is the true use of a medical degree.

6. Then, when I went into lab after being released from jury duty, our -80c freezer broke. Which is basically one of the worst things that can happen. I can’t even describe to you the mayhem that ensued as we tried to save all our samples. I really should have just gone straight home.

7. Are you doing real life things this weekend to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Let me live vicariously through you!

8. As for us, we will be carb loading for The.Boy’s half marathon on Sunday.

9. Yes, I said we. Don’t judge.

10. But really, find me some Bailey’s and Guinness infused layer cake to make. Because, New Year’s resolution bizarro world.

I can’t stop looking at that gorgeous cake! Your sister will be thrilled. : ) Good luck on your other half’s marathon…enjoy the carb loading!

  2. My family also has about 8 million birthdays from Feb 22nd through the end of March. It is a lost cause of birthday celebration eating!

  3. Teffy says:

I’ve never done jury duty, and I’m definitley not excited as I’m sure it will not be as exciting as those that happen on the TV shows!
Haven’t got any St Patricks Day plans yet… maybe some green drink?

    {Teffy’s Perks} X

  4. Glad you got off of jury duty! I once was stuck on a case for a MONTH. It was awful.
And I mean really, if you’re eating cake in celebration of others, there could never be such a thing as too much cake. So no worries 😉

  5. Such a pretty and fun cake for your sister’s birthday! So glad you got out of jury duty – see all that med school is paying off already ;).

  6. I promise not to judge if you guys let me carb load with you, lol! I’d love to start with a slice of that cake. 😉

  7. I love the cake. I wish was my birthday and someone would bake me a cake.

  8. Saturday is my official St Patrick’s day celebration, which means I’m officially getting drunk before 8 am. Just a different kind of carbo loading.

  9. elizabeth e says:

i hear you about the jury duty — i’m an attorney, and the minute that comes out of my mouth, they’re like, “see you later!” one of the few perks of law school, trust me. that cake looks amazing; i’m trying to cut down on my sugar consumption, too, and it times it just sucks.

  10. by “we” you mean me too because the universe hates my skinny jeans too so I may as well get in on the carb loading fun…

  11. The cake! Gorgeous. And sympathy carb-loading is always acceptable.

  12. Kinsey says:

I have a job as a pizza cook now, so I will be right there with you when you Carb-load. Isn’t it fun?

  13. Meg says:

Ah, jury duty — what a delight that is! I’ve been called in twice in the last few years, but never made it to the point of needing to be dismissed. I just spent four-ish hours reading in a back room while we waited to go before the judge, who thanked us but said our services were not needed. At least I got a half day at work! 🙂

    Also, that cake. Wow.

  14. Simply Life says:

haha, that is a great way to get off jury duty!

  15. haha i like to blame universe when it comes to skinny jeans as well..

  16. I think it’s quite thoughtful of you to carbo load with The Boy for his half marathon. Talk about support, right?! I’m sure he’ll do the same for you next time! 🙂

  17. Haha – Joanne, love your support of The.Boy’s half marathon carb loading!

Happy Birthday to your sis! Seeing you have a resolution to stick to, I will sacrifice my skinny jeans and help take some of that gorgeous cake off your hands – deal? 🙂

  18. I recently got out of jury duty completely… every night I called and they didn’t get to my number! That chocolate cake looks really delicious, too. I’d like a piece of chocolate cake right about now.

  19. That cake looks amazinggg! And I’m glad you got out of jury duty–hooray for being too smart! lol
My cousin is getting her PHD in biomedical engineering so that freezer disaster totally sounds like stuff she has to deal with sometimes, so sorry!

  20. Lol I was never into Pokeman, but my sister was into it HARD, so I’m sad to say I know quite a bit about it. YIKES! Annnnnd I feel like I’m eating more dessert than ever too. Oh well!

  21. Erica says:

Ha ha, you’re so funny! You’re sister sure is one lucky girl. Congrats on being excused from jury duty…I dread the day when I get that call. Hey, I’m in NYC next week and staying on the upper east side. Do you know of any cool markets/gourmet shops/restaurants in that area?

  22. Sammie says:

Oh Joanne!! That’s all of us! We make resolutions that we can never keep 🙁 I’ve been stuffing too much sweets in my belly too! haha.. But what can we really do when we’re just bakers by nature!

  23. Hahahah “we” I love it! I’ve definitely partaken in pizza parties after other people’s races, even if all I did was cheer.

After a week of semi-jury duty and work disasters, you totally deserve the booziest cake ever.

  24. cheri says:

What a great post Joanne, I actually laughed out loud twice reading this, your so funny sometimes.

  25. Haha. Love it! True use of the medical degree. 🙂
I hear you on the less desserts. I sort of feels that’s impossible for me as a blogger. Really struggle to not eat the whole pan of brownies. Because who could eat just one?
    Have a great Wednesday!

  26. Pam says:

See how useful your medical degree is? The cake looks lovely – I bet your sister loved it. Good luck to The.Boy on his half marathon.

  27. Love the cake! Since it’s your sister’s cake, you will only get a slice so your skinny jeans will still be OK…at least until the next cake event. 🙂

  28. As a physician, I am exempt from jury duty.. but I guess you still have a few more years to go. 🙂

  29. sandra says:

I think we all hate skinny jeans. Give them away. Stop torturing yourself.

  30. Darn, I knew I should have gone to med school! Hopefully next time I am on jury duty, I can put my advanced degree to good use too. Because, otherwise, what was all that blood/sweat/tears for? 🙂

  31. Kate says:

The last time I was called in for jury duty, I was dismissed, but the Oncologist wasn’t! But it wasn’t a med mal case – which it sounds like yours was. And now I’m dying to hear what the case was about, because I bet one side would have loved to have your medical knowledge, since it would have jibed with what their expert said.

  32. Christina says:

Ahhh carbo loading, I miss! I will be devouring a bowl of pad thai come Monday. Yes that is what I am craving, Pad Thai. If you could send over a slice of layer cake, it would be much appreciated 🙂 Happy to hear you were released from Jury Duty!

  33. Sues says:

That’s horrible about jury duty! Though good you were released 🙂

Any excuse for cab loading is a good one!

  34. That. Cake. Ugh I would take 2 slices right now.

  35. Christina says:

I can’t even stand your blog lately with all these cakes. I want it.

I’m glad that I’m not the only person who engages in sympathy carbo-loading. I figure if my BF needs to eat a couple slices of pizza in preparation for his races, I should support him by doing it myself.

Sorry about the freezer issue. =\

  36. Sarah says:

I’m Irish and I love how St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world! Small country, big impact worldwide it seems! Here’s a lovely video you may enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wmIZEl1nSo

I’ve recently moved to the UK, so unfortunately I won’t get my usual day off on Paddy’s Day! My plan is instead to celebrate it with my new housemates in our local pub (interestingly called “The Farmer’s Boy) 🙂

  37. What a beautiful cake! I love your sense of humor…you are so funny!
Love you Joanne! ….. xxoo Anna and Liz

  38. Monique says:

Im saving all my calories burned for the whole loaf of soda bread that will be consumed between Friday and Monday!
So, eat the cake. I am NOT judging!

  39. P says:

Loving #4—your MD/PhD training truly does have some real life applications ;)!

-80C freezers…they’re so hard to close too…at least the ones in my lab 😛

  40. ramblingtart says:

I love how supportive you are of your guy by eating carbs with him. 🙂

  41. Hotly Spiced says:

I’m so glad you managed to wrangle your way out of jury duty and I’m sure that every cent you spent on your medical degrees is ow absolutely worth it. I was called up three times and never saw the inside of a court room. Was always dismissed, Praise the Lord! xx

  42. I think cake is an essential food group 😉

  43. Danguole says:

I love how you were too smart for jury duty. Justice!! Um, or something.

  44. Christine says:

Hi Joanne, once again had a good chuckle over “I have too much medical knowledge in my brain and refused to take their “expert medical witness’s” statements as truth over what I learned in medical school”. Love it when things work that way! Cake looks delicious! I’m always so happy when I stop in and check out your blog!

  45. Oh no re. your freezer 🙁 I think that alone justifies more cake?!

  46. Urghh -80 broken is a nightmare. Sorry :(. We are moving buildings next week so we are shutting down experiments. Ps: I wish I had great spd plans other than booze cakes lol!

  47. I’m for once celebrating St. Patty’s, and when I have a baby…go figure! Needless to say the celebration will be low-key but we’re heading to the parade 🙂

  48. When people ask if we allow the kids to play video games, I respond with “Haley and Trevor? Or Paul?” Because Paul stays up until 2am enthralled in something called Mass Effect and then I get to hear about it the next morning. I pretend to be interested. Just kidding.

  49. I didn’t even try to make any New Year’s resolutions because I usually forget the next day after waking up from too much celebration wine. Oops. Jury duty I hear sucks, ugh, at least you know they consider you too smart! Law school has it’s terrible side but at least I don’t have to do jury duty – if that is my one positive, I will hang on to it. I want to find someone who is going out to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day too while I just sadly eat Guinness cake a week before the actual date and do nothing on the day itself. Double Oops.

  50. I would love to do jury duty, Joanne … it must be quite an experience, and I don’t think there would be any chance of me getting dismissed for having too much scientific knowledge. Oh no no! Hope the marathon goes well on Sunday and you enjoy all that chocolate cake you need to eat first to be a good, energetic supporter 😉

  51. Hehe, yeah, I had the same resolution to try to eat less sweets. I don’t think it’s going so well. 😉

  52. Can I carb-load for the marathon too? Ahhh I was meant to run one this very weekend, but then I fell down the stairs and kinda ruined everything :—–( I guess I’m still doing the carb loading part, judge me.
    Good luck to him! xx

  53. rika@vm says:

I don’t do New Year’s resolutions anymore…I don’t really follow them at all, hehe! I hate skinny jeans, too, I’m really into yoga pants and leggings, they are so comfortable, especially for flying! Oh goodness on the broken freezer! I love reading your coffee talks! Good luck to the boy on his marathon!

  54. What a beautiful cake! And am I the only person who really wanted to do jury duty back when I was summoned? I just wanted to get out of work and thought the experience would be cool, but we just waited all day and it was dismissed, and then the same thing on a new trial on day 2. Joy.
