On the list of things I highly recommend never ever doing in life, watching someone die is one of them.

No one should ever have to watch their child, best friend, father, mother, or sibling lay in a hospital bed and fight for their lives.

No one should ever be told “there is nothing more we can do”.

The day I was told that my father had cancer was the worst day of my life. And, two weeks later, he was gone. Just like that.

I could cry every day for every moment that we should have had together, but don’t. For every day that would be made better just by him being alive. For every second that I want to call him or hug him or see him laying on our couch in the living room, but can’t.  He was the best person that I have ever known. The most selfless, caring, genuine person. Not having him around is the worst feeling in the world, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

But crying won’t change anything, and it most certainly won’t help us find a cure so that no one else has to feel this pain.

So instead, I run. I am currently training for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon with Team in Training and fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The money that I raise will go to funding cancer research and help support patient care.

To that end, I am hosting a Virtual Bake Sale with all the proceeds going towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Thank you so much to all of my blogging friends who have donated baked goods for this great cause and thank you advance to all of you who will bid and participate. It means the world that you would do this for me and for all the cancer patients out there who are fighting for their lives, every day, waiting for that cure.

So please, head over here to check out what’s up for auction.

If you want to donate separately from this, you can check out my fundraising page.

I do remember when you let us know on your post that your father was seriously ill. But I was so saddened and incredibly shocked when just a few weeks later you had to tell us he has passed away. It still shocks me. What a great cause and it must be not only helpful but therapeutic to actively be doing something to make sure this sort of thing comes to an end xx

  39. Kathleen Kennedy says:

Joanne, my heart breaks for you and everyone who has been in this situation, both patients and loved ones. I love how you are honoring your Dad by the things you do in your life. I had planned to bid on something in the bake sale, but somehow I couldn’t get any of my bids to “take”. Chalk it up to computer illiteracy on the part of this old broad! Anyway, I very happily went to your fundraising page a made a small (unhappily small) donation. Congratulations, Joanne, on all the good you are doing!

  40. Nobody should have to go through something like this. It’s so wonderful that you’re getting out there to help raise money so that other people won’t have to suffer like so many others have. This bake sale is a great idea, and I’m glad to be part of it!
