berrylicious summer fruit and cheese bites

Can we discuss the cheese counter and what a whirlwhind of fear, confusion, and excitement it strikes in my chest?

So many cheeses, so little time, and so little money.

How’s a girl to know whether the $25/pound taleggio is tastier than the $24/pound brie?

What if the smelly cheeses are too smelly?

And what if they’re not smelly enough?

My favorite grocery store used to have a little basket of cheese odds and ends where you could find an ounce or two of most of their cheeses, this way you could get a taste without having to really make a serious cheese commitment. Each time I went, I would let myself pick one as a treat for the walk home, which was awesome because it introduced me to cheeses I would have been scared to try in half pound form.

Recently, that little basket disappeared and I was totally crestfallen. Where was I going to get my crazy cheese fix?!

Thankfully, Sargento has recently come out with a line of eight specialty snack block cheese varieties, called Sargento Tastings, which allow you to get lots of tastes of different cheeses for a totally affordable price! Each block ranges from 3.25 to 3.95 oz, and they have fun flavors such as Aged Wisconsin Cheddar, Parmentino, Fiesta Pepper Jack, Bruschetta Jack, Creamy Havarti, and more.

Perfect for wine and cheese parties, or when you just feel like eating ALL THE CHEESE, but want something new to try. (So basically, always.)

Now that the warmer weather is finally here, I love making meals of a cheese plate paired with various types of seasonal produce.

After the long harsh winter, I’ve been craving stone fruits and berries something fierce, so my consumption of these cheeses has so far involved pouring all the fruit in my fridge on top of slices of cheese and calling it dinner. Featured you’ll see my berry sauce from yesterday’s post, fresh strawberries, and a white nectarine/strawberry combo atop the creamy Asiago and sharp New Zealander.

Matches made in cheese heaven, I’ll tell ya.

Of course, the options for this kind of cheese consumption are endless and I’d love to hear what your favorite combinations are for cheese pairings! A girl’s gotta have an excuse to go out and buy another round of these, after all.

Enable me. Please.

  1. I am totally a cheeseaholic…I definitely should check out those Sargento Tastings!

  2. I’ve seen those Sargento cheeses — Josh referred to them as snack cheeses and asked if they could be the focal point of his lunch this week. I wish I was kidding. For some reason, my small town which barely has somehting as basic as a Mexican restaurant has TWO cheese stores. Like, specifically and only for cheese (and all of the surrounding towns are getting them too). We definitely stand there abusing the free sample policy when selecting our cheeses. I can’t imagine dropping money on expensive cheeses without a few (dozen) tastes first!

  3. Ooooh!! I’ve never had blueberries and cheese before! Might need to get me this combo immediately

  4. Blueberries and cheese?? I’ve yet to try this awesomeness

  5. You have just enabled my cheese addiction. 🙂

  6. I love cheese! Even if I’m lactose intolerant. must. fight. through.pain! Love them with dried and fresh fruits too!

  7. These summer fruit bites look amazing, Joanne! Definitely need to try these out soon!

  8. Cheese + Fruit is totally a meal. And one of my favorites too. There is one grocery store near us that has a similar cheese end basket and it’s my favorite! Plus, the people who work there are really nice, so if you linger in the cheese area long enough and look like you’re really considering your options, they’ll offer you a sample. Best grocery store ever.

Now I’m craving cheese…love the blueberries with the cheese, that is a new combo for me. Like the idea of tasting cheeses.

  10. I want ALL the cheese and fruit! Yum!

  11. Katerina says:

Simple and elegant Joanne! I love these sweet bites!

  12. its perfection. I mean just perfect for summer. sweet and salty and creamy:) Love it

  13. Leah Davis says:

The Whole Foods near me has a little “bite basket” and I am totally addicted to it – I would be so sad if it disappeared! This sounds like a great way to get a lot of little bites. I love cheese too!! (especially with my wine…)

  14. sandra says:

cheese goes well with just about anything… except… no, anything.

  15. Julia says:

What if cheese isn’t smelly enough? Haha, you crack me up! It’s funny, but oh so true! I’m big on the ol’ cheese eating and haven’t been patient enough in the past to whip up toppers for my cheese. Judging by how yummy your berry concoction looks, I’ll have to put my patient pants on and do some topping!

  16. Kate says:

You can’t go wrong with cheese in any form!

  17. Heather says:

Mmm – love cheese! I admit I’ve never tried blueberries with cheese, though… generally I just stick with apples and grapes, but clearly I need to be more adventurous!

  18. Anita D'Souza says:

Taleggio! My fave, though I only buy it when WF has it on sale for $10/lb. Love the fruit/cheese combos. Sounds like a great dinner to.me!

  19. I’ve had apples and cheese, but not berries and cheese – thanks for the idea lady!

  20. Pam says:

I could totally eat this for dinner and be perfectly happy. I tried a sharp cheddar with truffle recently that made me swoon.

  21. Oh cheese, how I love you. Soft, hard, mild, stinky, melty, gooey, cold, warm, sliced, shredded, with things, in things, on things. And with fruit. Oh yes. Definitely yes.

  22. Lisa says:

I love the basket of cheese bobs and bits! So sad that your favorite grocery store doesn’t carry them any more! I love the fresh berries and cheese idea! I like adding a bit of quince jam on the cheese, but the jam can get quite pricey. Definitely going to try eating cheese with berries next time!

  23. P says:

There was a local grocery store that used to lay out cheese samples, but I think people started to abuse it cause it’s not there anymore :(.

My fav cheeses from those days were brie and goat cheese of different flavors!

  24. Seasonal berries and cheese…a winning combination, Joanne.

  25. Eileen says:

One of my favorite stores has that exact same cheese odds and ends bin! It’s so convenient and delicious. And fruit and cheese sounds like exactly what I want to eat today. It’s supposed to be 95F! WHAT.

  26. Christine says:

I totally relate to “#cheese addict problems”. Never was lucky enough to have a cheese odds and ends bin in the stores I shop at. Sorry to hear yours went away. These Sargento cheeses are brilliant. I’ll have to keep an eye out.

  27. Mmm. Cheese and fruit. What beauty lies here.
Hope you’re having a terrific Tuesday Joanne!

  28. Omnom! I know how being a cheeseaholic feels like!! 🙂

  29. yep cheese & fruit go so well together.
I always make my apple pie with a cheddar crust.
I remember my grandfather would always have a giant piece of very sharp cheddar cheese on his apple pie. I thought it was so weird, but so happy as I aged, realized what a fantastic pairing. And this was years, decades ago. (I’m that old! lol)

  30. Abby says:

I swear every day at 330 I must have a piece of cheese or it’s like the day cannot go on 🙂 I’m slowly warming up to the idea of pairings, this looks so good esp with a glass of wine!

  31. Tina says:

Oh yeah, I will enable you! Big fan of cheese, all sorts too. I love going to Whole Foods and checking out all the varieties. You put together a wonderful plate if goodies here. Mmmm

  32. Two things I can’t resist – cheese and fruit! These bites look incredibly berrylicious!

  33. Megan says:

I love the idea of tasting blocks. We have a great cheese shop near us, where if you so much as look at a cheese, they offer you a sample of it. It’s a great way to figure out what I like and want to purchase.

  34. Hotly Spiced says:

Joanne – I’m still on my juice fast! I would love someone to walk up to me with a cheese platter! I love the sound of these cheeses, particularly the pepper one xx

  35. HULLO, DELICIOUS. Is it wine o’clock yet? Love these.

  36. Blond Duck says:

    Sounds delicious to me!

  37. Joanne, I never knew fruit and cheese could look so delicious together. I too love when I find little pieces of cheese to try. I don’t want to commit to a big hunk. I also love when the market is doing taste samples 😀

  38. Monet says:

Ryan is passionate about cheese. He always spends what feels like hours talking to the cheese monger! I love the combo of cheese and fruit. Just lovely Joanne!

  39. I love French brie from Breton and a good gorgonzola 🙂

  40. Danguole says:

I totally do the “pick up a tiny wedge of cheese to eat on the way home” thing too! In fact, I will often go to the grocery store that lets me do this over any others. When will the rest of them catch on?

  41. daphne says:

Aren’t you a lucky girl! I would love that any time of the day!

  42. OMG!!!!!! I am a complete cheese freak and this is making me DROOOOL!!!!!!!!! I.WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!! <3

  44. Reeni says:

Love the idea of cheese odds and ends! A whole bunch of them would be coming home with me! I hope they bring the back! These pictures are stunning. I want to reach in and grab some!
