spring

1. Spring on Park Avenue. It’s basically the best.

2. Until of course it’s the worst and downpours for the better half of the weekend, causing all the bugs to crawl up from the ground, through your pipes, and you wake up at 6AM on Tuesday morning to a cockroach on your bathroom floor. Yes, I might have died a million deaths in that moment. He was large (upwards of 2 inches) and in charge, and was roaming around like he owned the place. Little does he know, an exterminator is on his way this AM to clear out the rest of his roach family. There is zero tolerance for arthropods in this apartment. ZERO.

3. Sometimes I think The.Boy forgets that I’m a real girl. Like when he looked at me in shock when I told him that I bought four dresses and three pairs of shoes online for our engagement photos this Sunday. I mean, necessary. Am I right? Besides, I’ll probably return most of the a few things. Maybe.

4. I also booked a hair appointment and a makeup session at Sephora. But those will be our little secret…

5. If I made this my wedding invitation, how many people do you think would be offended?

6. Kind of in love with these paper heart garlands on Etsy but also kind of on the fence because I feel like I could make them myself. If I had any semblance of patience for anything that isn’t edible. Like, I could spend hours making pie crusts but tell me to fold laundry for 20 minutes and I am out.

7. So, apparently May is salad month. Kind of ironic that it directly follows grilled cheese month. But also kind of glorious. At least, I know my arteries are jumping for joy.

8. Because the program that I’m in at school is run by three different institutions, we are going to have to move from our current housing situation to that of one of the other institutions this summer. I went to look at some of the available apartments yesterday. And some of them DON’T HAVE OVENS. They have a stove and a space below it where an oven should be. But NO OVEN. I find this baffling.

9. Between that and the cockroach…I may be having a nervous breakdown.

10. Come August, there is a high chance you will find me handcuffing myself to my apartment door in protest. Be prepared.

  1. No oven? How is that considered a livable situation?!

Your engagement photos will be fantastic! So smart to get your hair and makeup done. I regretted not doing that (our engagement pics were terrible).

  2. Jenna says:

    No oven?! GAH.

I can’t even address the cockroach. Nope.

  3. Simply Life says:

you’ll have to share those engagement photos with us!

  4. Maybe they leave the space where the oven should be open so your hate fire can be funneled in that direction to actually bake? I’ve never seen an ovenless apartment, but for some reason I’ve seen lots with no refrigerator. Am I just supposed to carry one around on my back from apartment to apartment?

  5. I just tried posting my original comment, and wordpress told me “You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.” So strange! Apparently I was super eager to comment.
Have fun with your engagement photos!
And you had better find an apt w/ an oven! Yikes. Don’t these people know who you are???

  6. Three pairs of shoes is totally necessary. SO EXCITED for those photos!

  7. Meg says:

ZOMG! Love the paper garlands, and they’re very similar to lovely ones we had at my nuptials. I’ll give you a little bride-ly advice you probably don’t need, but humor me: pick a few projects to make yourself, but consider your sanity in the process. Time goes FAST; you know this! There will be a million projects you could probably DIY yourself . . . but unless you’re starting them far in advance, guard your time and energy. As long as you’re comfortable with the cost, order what you love . . . I don’t think you’ll be sorry. I certainly was not! (And I was overly ambitious with most of what we could “make.” Everything turned out beautifully, but it was a struggle at the end. STRUGGLE.)

  8. Johanna GGG says:

love the tulip photo and the wedding invitation but I too am baffled by a kitchen without an oven – maybe they expect you to just light a fire in the space where the oven should be and cook the old fashioned way 🙂 Good luck with the photos

  9. Laughed so hard when I read your comment about not having patience for non-food things. I am the EXACT same way. PS shoes<–totally necessary, always.

  10. NOOOOO. Cockroaches are the work! We just saw one in the office this morning, and now I keep thinking it is crawling on my feet. *shudder* Park Ave is so pretty this time of year – I walk home on it every day!!

  11. 1-ughhh that is one of my fave things! I miss spring on Park Ave 🙁
    2-eeeep! I don’t miss that.
3&4-yayyy! You’re gonna be so pretty (I mean you always are but you know what I mean!)
5-bahahahaaaa YES. love it. doooo it 😛
6-I’m the same way! No patience for things that aren’t cooking/baking!
8,9&10-oh no!! Just stay calm girl, you’ll work it out! But yeah…def make sure you have an oven! (some people are cuhraaazy!)

  12. oMG love the RSVP card and WTF are you gonna do without an oven?! Eeeeeeek! All this while planning a wedding, damn girl!

  13. Oh New Yorkkkkkk! I don’t miss the cockroaches, the rats in the subway and the pathetic mini fridges the landlords call full-sized! Also cockroaches love ovens…Maybe that’s why they don’t have them? TRAGIC!

  14. daphne says:

awww.. engagement photos! I can’t wait to see some of them… please. 😉 But yes, it is necessary to have the dresses and shoes- you never know what suits what right? 🙂

oh dear, i hope the apartment hunt goes well. OVEN IS A NECESSITY!

    x

  15. Heather says:

That might be the most awesome wedding invite ever… I only wish we’d done something like that for ours… I’m pretty sure almost everyone would have laughed.

No oven?? How is that even possible?

  16. Kelli B says:

That wedding RSVP is hilarious! Oh my some of those things are so true of some people. RSVP’s drove me craaaaazy!

  17. Forcing a move is one thing, but to a place with no oven?? WHAT WILL YOU DO? 😉

  18. I don’t know what I’d do if I ever saw a cockroach in my place .. I think they’re one of the main reasons I could never live in New York lol. And I hope you don’t have to go somewhere without an oven – that’s nuts! Engagement photos are exciting though!

  19. sandra says:

oh dear – I lived without an oven for 5 years in an SRO on 85th St on CPW. But at that time in my life my better half was the cook. Hmm, come to think of it my current better half is also the cook… some things don’t change.

  20. Lynn says:

That invitation is funny. 🙂 Love those sandals! So you’ll share the pics with us, yes? And no oven is madness!

  21. No oven?? How are you to live? Insanity. Oh I bought a minimum of three dresses for all my bridal events (engagement pictures, bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, day after brunch) Ahhh so many dresses and none went back :0 That invite is so funny!

  22. P says:

I love that picture with the tulips—so gorgeous!!

  23. cheri says:

Love the picture of Park Avenue in the spring. Sounds like you are ready for your engagement photo session. How fun!

  24. Lisa says:

When I was living in China, there were no household ovens ANYWHERE. That drove me mad, so I feel your pain. Finally, a friend of mine decided to buy one of those countertop ovens that fits just about a loaf oven in there. We made banana bread. It was a joyous occasion.

  25. Leah Davis says:

The fact that you are in school full time and producing such amazing posts so frequently is just awesome – you totally rock!! You must have some sick time management skills 🙂 I can’t believe the no oven situation!! Hopefully that will work itself out!!

Guys are just kind of zoned out when it comes to all of the necessary wedding accessories that women need. You are so smart to schedule the hair and makeup sesh – we don’t like our engagement photos at all because we both look so tired. I’m sure some makeup would have made a difference!! Plus if you like the person, then maybe you can use her for the real thing 🙂

You make me miss New York!! Plus of living in NYC = beautiful spring. Minus of living in NYC = bugs in apartments 🙁

  26. Monica says:

Tulips are my favorite – what a great pic. Have fun with your engagement photos. And good luck finding good housing – an oven is a serious must. I feel your pain.

  27. Teffy Perk says:

Oh wow that wedding invite is the one!! Wish I had seen it earlier so could suggest it to my brother… but since the wedding is this Saturday, I’m guessing it’s a bit late!

    {Teffy’s Perks} X

PS – Good luck with that cockroach!

  28. Good golly – no oven!!!???? Actually, I shouldn’t be surprised, one time my sis lived in an apartment in Manhattan that didn’t have an oven and only a mini fridge – as or the sink, one could only wash one hand at a time!
That invite was hilarious – love the behavior part!!!

  29. Beth says:

Yikes. But salad month … yay!

  30. Kate says:

Do the apartments have a fireplace? Maybe you’re supposed to get a big pot and cook over an open fire.

  31. No oven? Weird. 3 pairs of shoes – totally necessary.

  32. Multiple dresses and shoes are totally necessary. I mean, those are for extra special photos that you guys will be enjoying FOREVER, so it’s really sort of like an investment.

  33. One of the PhD students I supervise told me the other week that she has no oven. The context was that she had baked a cake in the microwave. I had no words. I still don’t understand. Don’t go there!

  34. Krista says:

Those tulips are stunning!! 🙂 No oven? Good heavens. And I thought moving to Australia and finding my oven bolted to the OUTSIDE of a shed odd. 🙂

  35. Sam says:

That “other institution” didn’t happen to be the one much farther uptown, did it? I rented an apartment from them when I was in grad school. No kitchen sink. Hot plate instead of a stove. I did most of my cooking using a George Forman Grill, a rice cooker, and a toaster oven. No oven might be pretty good for them.

  36. Liz says:

A couple of years ago, I had a friend renting an apartment in SF that had no oven or stove or BATHROOM. They had a sink and hot plate and a shared bathroom in the hall. And it wasn’t a great deal either! That said, if you do end up sans oven, I recommend the Breville toaster oven; it’s pricey but amazing. I baked/broiled/roasted in it for a week when our oven broke!

  37. OMG how is that even legal? No oven?? I mean, I was just without a stovetop for like 2 weeks and almost died!

  38. Pam says:

I could not handle living with a cockroach either – UGH! There is also no way I could handle living without an oven.

I hope you share your engagement photos with us. Hint, hint. 🙂

  39. You totally need that as your wedding invitation, I say whoever is offended doesn’t deserve you as a friend, anyway. Also? May is salad month…and here I was planning on posting all my recipes in June. Is that sacrilege? Like no white after labor day… guess I’m going to break more rules.

  40. Christina says:

No ovens???!!!! Um what. Perhaps the four dresses are a good distraction….

  41. It would be hard to live without an oven. Have fun with the engagement pictures, one step closer to the wedding.

  42. Shannon says:

ew no oven?! mike tried to get me excited about a place with a mini oven because it was so big! and cheap! nice try, buddy, but that would make me very unhappy. hopefully things will work out alright :/

  43. Reeni says:

No oven? Ack! 🙁 You could handcuff yourself to the oven instead! I am so excited about your engagement pictures! I hope you share them!

  44. Love those tulips! Bugs are just the worst. It’s like it’s finally nice outside and now we have this new problem. Awesome :/ I kinda think you should send that wedding invite.
