er visit

Sometimes mandolines happen to good people.

And for that reason we are having a very abbreviated Wednesday Coffee Talk today as I allow my finger avulsion to heal a bit more. (I basically sliced off the skin on the underside of my finger while trying to slice potatoes. No stitches necessary because there was nothing to actually stitch back together. TMI.)

After last night, all I have to say is thank goodness for having friends who are surgeons and can help expedite the process so that what would have probably been a six hour ER stay only lasted 2 and a half hours.

Thankfully you don’t have to miss my ramblings too much because, coincidentally, I am guest posting over at The Cooking Actress today! So make sure you stop by Kayle’s blog today to get your daily dose of ridiculousness and a batch of savory waffles.

  1. Eeeeeeek! I hope you’re ok!! The mandolin terrifies me.

  2. Too funny about the finger – we were in the ER for two hours on Memorial Day as I got my finger glued back together. #kitchenproblems

  3. Beth says:

The mandolin terrifies me too, and I know other people who have injured themselves. I’m a bit klutzy and therefore keep my kitchen as low-tech as possible. Happy healing!

  4. Kaitlyn says:

Eek!! Hope your finger has a quick recovery!

  5. When my mom was in culinary school, she sliced off 3/4 of the tip of a finger as well. She was so excited to ice cakes, she was trying to breeze through bread slicing! I think it kind of puts you in this elite club when you have an injury of that sort so welcome! Hope it heals quickly and not too painfully!

  6. Oh dear, so sorry to hear this! Best wishes for a speedy recovery 🙂

  7. Sune Moolman says:

You deserve some cake for not fainting! Or rather, the whole cake. 😉

  8. bellini says:

I did the same once slicing an apple cake for the ladies at work, and it will only happen once:D Of course there was no stopping the bleeding.

  9. I’ve always been terrified of mandolines and now will forever stay away! Eek hope your finger is feeling better!

  10. Sorry to hear about your finger. I suppose it happens to the best of us… oddly enough, it was slicing potatoes and rhubarb that snagged me. After that, I bought a knife sharpener. 😉

  11. Yikes! Glad to hear that you are okay. Stay away from that mandoline! Heading over to check out the waffles!

  12. Rachel Cooks says:

Yikes!!! Hope it heals quickly! xo

  13. Aww. You poor girl. Yes, less typing might equal a quicker healing. Glad it didn’t take as long as expected. Friends are the best!
Saying a prayer for quick healing Joanne. Rest easy my friend!

  14. Oh no! I wish your finger speedy healing!

  15. Johanna GGG says:

it made me a little squeamish when I realised that was blood in the dish – hope your cut gets better (I once had a cut that involved a christmas tree and a bread knife where I slashed across my finger and couldn’t have stitches – I still have a little scar which reminds me of the crazy moment)

  16. Ouch!!! Well, I guess it could be worse 🙂 So so great to hang with you this weekend – missing the #CabotFit gang.

  17. Monica says:

Ouch! Glad you are okay! I had a little mishap with the teeny tip of my pinky last summer when I was trying to julienne carrots. My husband and I about passed out and it was, luckily, nothing major. Needless to say, I’ve been working on my knife skills. Take care now!

  18. carly carter says:

God Bless! Too much trauma for such a nice, hard working blogger! May you heal quickly.

  19. Trisha says:

Girl!! The dangers of the kitchen. Glad you’re alright! I think this necessitates lots of pampering and cooking by the fiancé, don’t you? BTW, those savory cornmeal waffles with eggs and salsa look fantastic!

  20. OMG, soooo glad you have doctor friends too! Looks like you are pretty happy about that from the pic! Feel better!

  21. Look at you, you are smiling as if nothing happened. Hope you heal fast. Motherly advise…use that slicing guard if you use your mandolin again.

  22. Ouch! I hope your finger heals quickly!

  23. SallyBR says:

Oh, I almost passed out… did you know I am a wimp and cannot read about or see images of “certain things” without fainting? It’s not a joke, actually, it’s a problem I’ve had since very young, first time I was maybe 5 years old

oh, well – I hope you heal quickly… those mandolines are nasty, I respect mine and respect it so much in fact, that I rarely bring it out to play…

a big hug going your way, but don’t worry, I won’t touch your hand

  24. Heather says:

Ouch! I think this is why I don’t have a mandolin… I can definitely see this happening. Happy healing!

  25. Sorry to hear about your finger 🙁 Hope you recover quickly!

  26. I hate it when that happens! So much blood…

  27. Ahhh! I literally cringed out loud (and had horrible images) when I saw your IG photo last night! Mandolines were the number one tool (oh and deli slicers) that terrified the bejeesus out of me in culinary school. And to this day…

  28. you poor thing!!! first food poisoning and now this!!! STAY SAFE! lol

  29. Saw this pic on IG! Whoever said food blogging wasn’t dangerous clearly has never met a mandoline! Hope it heals soon!

  30. sandra says:

so sorry to hear. I thought that picture was of you getting your nails done – was I ever wrong!

  31. Sues says:

Oh man, that sounds awful! But it’s great to have friends in high places 🙂 Hope it doesn’t hurt too badly!

  32. Julia says:

OH NOOOO! Mandolin injuries are the worst! I’ve had my share of knicks, but never have I sliced off that much skin. I wish you a speedy recovery, my lady!!

Heading over to Cooking Actress now to check out them waffs!

  33. Girlfriend, I hear ya! I’ve taken off two finger tips and a thumb tip with a very very sharp knife, and the finger tip on my opposite hand with my mandoline. Maybe one day I’ll learn? Hope you heal swiftly.

  34. Quinn had a mandoline incident a few weeks ago. It was pretty rough. Wishing you quick healing!

  35. cheri says:

Yikes! Thank goodness your okay, those madolines are like cheese graters, dangerous!

  36. Eileen says:

Oh nooo! That does not sound fun at all. But then, it’s also a badge of honor! You can always tell a cook by their serious array of finger scars, right? For instance, I have a row of three identical scars on top of my right middle finger from slipping while washing my chef’s knife…three separate times. And then there’s the pad of scar on the tip of my left middle finger, from the time I was too sleepy to be making work lunch at seven in the morning. You are definitely in good company! 🙂

  37. I about died when I saw your instagram! Hope you’re okay! I can’t believe that is a pool of blood…gag! lol

  38. Emily says:

    OH nooo! Get better soon!

  39. Kate says:

    Oh. My. GOODNESS!

Glad it was just a slice and not a tip! Hmm maybe metal gloves are in order?

  40. danielle says:

The mandoline always scares the crap out of me – so does the blade in my ninja. Did you say savory waffles – gotta check that out.

  41. Veronica says:

OMgosh, OUCH!! You look so happy to be mangled though! lol! I have a really hard core friend that sliced herself very badly with a mandoline and after bleeding for four hours (it was so deep she couldn’t stop it), she super glued her hand back together. FREAK. But it worked and no ER visit! lol

  42. Oh my goodness, I can almost feel how painful that must have been! I’ve heard how evil mandolines can be before. So not as bad, but I once ‘grated’ my knuckles along with some cheddar. Ouch too. Take it easy for a while longer, Joanne, and hope to see you back here with a healed finger soon! 🙂

  43. Oh, a mandolin encounter can be crazily painful… I’m so sorry to hear about the accident, it will get better!

  44. Needless to say, when I saw your IG post yesterday, I felt immediately queasy. My sister almost lost a finger 2 years ago while chopping onions. They say most accidents happen in the bathroom, but I say it’s definitely the kitchen! Hope you’re ok, love!

  45. Ohhh hope you are feeling better! Thank God you do have wonderful friends who are surgeons, you never know when you need one. Take care!

  46. Leanna says:

The cut resistance gloves are amazing! They are soft and flexible and you will never cut yourself on the mandolin again. My husband knows me well and bought me a pair when he bought me a mandolin. Get a pair!

  47. Waahhhhhh so sorry to hear that friend!! Get them fingers better! xx

  48. Christine says:

Oh my dear, ouch! Finger injuries are so painful. Feel better, nice to have surgeon friends! Try not to type too much, too soon. I’ll say it again, ouch!

  49. Christina says:

Oooof! So sorry to hear that! I had a roommate who once had a similar encounter…. heal fast????

  50. Hotly Spiced says:

Oh dear. I’m so sorry! That must have been painful. How helpful to have friends in the hospital who could fast-track the horror that is the waiting around in ER xx

  51. Ouch! I’ve done that with a knife and it was not pleasant. Hope you heal quickly 🙂

  52. Serena says:

Yikes. Take it easy and rest for a few days! Heal up…’p’ ‘:’ and ‘?’ are very important keystrokes…right pinkies need to be healthy! (: (It looks like it’s your right pinky?)

  53. Oh no!!! Wishing you a smooth recovery!

  54. 🙁 I hope you get better real soon!!!!! I’m looking at those waffles and drooooling! I love savory waffles and these look real tempting!

  55. Since I flattened the tip of a finger with a mandoline a few years ago I cringe every time I carefully use it or see someone else get cut. Heal fast! 😉

  56. Lynn says:

Oh my!!! Sorry that happened to you. And sorry I have missed some of your posts – out of town with no computer access and then slammed at work this week. I am drooling over that basil hummus concoction from a few days ago. Will be back to look at that one more in depth.

  57. Min says:

Ouchie! Sending lots of xoxo along your way! Note to self: must make surgeon friends! 😉

  58. P says:

The consequences of being an avid cook…but the perks of being an MD/PhD student? Haha…hope you do feel better though!

  59. 🙁 🙁 i cringed bigtime when i saw this pic on facebook 🙁 hope you’re feeling better soon!

  60. I didn’t think you would be smiling if your finger was resting in a pool of blood. My sister and mom have both had run-ins with the mandolin, so I prefer to use the food processor! Mandolins are scary!

  61. Kristi says:

Oh no! I hope your finger gets better. That is always my worst fear.

  62. Teffy Perk says:

Oh no!! That is one of the worst cookery nightmares =(
Hope your finger heels quickly and as painless as possible!

  63. Oh gosh. Oh no! This sounds really awful, which I’m sure doesn’t help, but I’m really sorry for your finger and hope it heals soon!

  64. Ouch! Sorry about your finger. Hope it heals quickly. I think I’m kinda glad my mandoline broke.

  65. Reeni says:

Hope you’re on the mend! That sounds extremely painful!

  66. Betty says:

Ouch! Those things are finger eaters.

  67. Danguole says:

I’m getting woozy just looking at this, and you’re being such a champ about it! Heal fast, gurl!

  68. rika@vm says:

Oh goodness, I hope you’re okay! Mandoline is my biggest pet peeve, it almost killed my boy. He fainted and fell down the stairs. It was so scary! Sending you speedy healing vibes your way!

  69. Erica says:

That’s why I don’t have a mandolin…I’m terrified of them! Hope you heal up soon.

  70. Megan says:

Hope your finger is doing better! I took a nice chunk off my thumb once. Now I let Jeff do the mandoline-ing. He’s much better at it!

  71. Susan says:

Oh ouch! I am so careful to use that guard thingy that came with mine. I just have a tendency to cut myself with knives. Hope you heal quickly!

  72. Meg says:

Hope you’re already feeling better, Joanne. No fun!

  73. Courtney says:

Mandolines and cheese graters, man. I’d much rather slice my finger with a knife than either of those things. I know it’s been a couple weeks, so I hope your finger is totally healed now!
