farmer's market

1. Somehow I can never make it to work before 9:30 but tell me to go to a farmer’s market 60 blocks downtown in search of squash blossoms before 8AM? And I will be out that door by 7:30. On the dot. Puzzling.

2. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that neon cauliflower makes me feel more alive than fluorescent cells do. But that’s just a guess.

3. Speaking of squash blossoms, I’m beginning to think the powers that be really don’t want me to get my hands on any. In the past week, I have been to five grocery stores and two farmer’s markets in search of them. And all I could find was EIGHT MEASLY ONES. And by “all I could find” I mean that I bought ALL OF THEM. To summarize: there are exactly eight squash blossoms in all of NYC. And they are all in my refrigerator. Don’t ever say dedication is not my middle name.

4. Exhaustion is also (still) my middle name. If someone could come to my apartment every night and force me to go to bed before midnight, that would be ideal.

5. The.Boy and I are SO CLOSE to finishing Breaking Bad. I can almost taste it. We’re at the point right now where Walt and I are not BFFs anymore. Not even a little bit. Jessie and I, on the other hand? We’re a little bit in love.

6. My life has been so devoid of ice cream lately, it’s not even funny. Tell me what flavor to make next. Go!

7. Also, I’m giving away a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer!! So while you’re going, might as well check that out!

8. That feeling when your building has no hot water the morning that you need to give a big presentation in front of almost 100 people? And so you can’t possibly shower, let alone wash your hair. That was me. Yesterday. Please don’t tell anyone.

9. I did manage to wash my underarms in the sink. Because I have some self respect.

10. I’m not even especially patriotic, but I want to star spangle everything in my life for at least the next week or so. You don’t think only eating red, white and blue meals for the next week would be overkill, do you?

if you find that person that gets you to bed early please send them my way – though even if they get me sleeping early I am still not keen on farmers markets at 8 – youch – I usually make it around 10am. And you really just needed a pommy shower – that is what we call it when you don’t shower but think a bit of deodorant on the armpits will do it – hope the presentation went well

  2. Sues says:

#4. I SO need that. I was so exhausted last night I actually passed out before 11:00, which is UNHEARD for me. I’m still tired this morning…

Nothing wrong with all red, white, and blue food for a few days 🙂

  3. I can’t believe you haven’t finished Breaking Bad yet, go, go go! Actually, at the end, I couldn’t wait to be done because it was so hard to watch.

I’m good at eating ice cream AND going to bed early, just hang with me and you are set:-)

  4. I hope you love the rest of Breaking Bad!!
As for ice cream, I think you should have something coffee flavored…or, completely the opposite, strawberry rhubarb. I had the latter the other night and it was awesome!

  5. That cauliflower looks gorgeous! Are squash blossoms particularly delicious? I’ve never eaten them (despite seeing them everywhere… looks like Michigan has them all this year! None for NYC).

  6. Samantha says:

Ice cream…bourbon-cherry? I think that would be delicious. Chocolate chunks would also be good.

  7. Krista says:

Wishing you a good sleep and hot water and copious amounts of ice cream this week, luv. 🙂

  8. Trisha says:

Neon cauliflower totally beats out florescent lights. Can’t wait to see what you do with the zucchini flowers! When I was in Italy, my cooking class stuffed them with cheese and deep fried them and they were SOO GOOD.

  9. SallyBR says:

HA! I thought you were done with Breaking Bad before me and Phil!

well, I developed a huge crush for Jessie, even though I am old enough to be his Mom. I don’t care. Sue me

now, please, make it a very special evening when you see the final episode.. is is AMAZING. I say no more

  10. Those neon cauliflower are the cutest! Also, is Breaking Bad really good? I’m so thinking of watching it but I don’t know if I like the idea hmmmmmmmmmmm.
Hope you get some relax soon! xx

  11. Monica says:

That cauliflower – just gorgeous! I could just look at them for at least half an hour. I hear the call of our farmer’s market every Sunday too and can’t resist. Choices are far more limited than what you have but it’s still a great place to shop. It is so hot…go enjoy some ice cream, any ice cream, real soon!

  12. I’ve got a rather scrummy ice cream recipe on the blog this weekend that I think should make..s’mores ice cream anyone? Ha love the bit about being up bright and early for farmers market but not for work, funny how the though of delicious produce has us out of our beds just like that!

  13. LMAO I am with you cannot get to work on time, but food ALWAYS! The end of Breaking Bad is perfection- you will LOVE it!

  14. Heather says:

Okay… what does one do with squash blossoms? I mean, obviously you eat them, but I’ve never had them, so I’m intrigued! As for ice cream… something summery… maybe even tropical? That might just be because I’d love to be on an island right now, though.

  15. Kinsey says:

The local ice cream place near me makes coffee ice cream with cacao nib toffee. It’s unreal.

  16. I’m in a bit of a chunky monkey phase right now, so my vote is for that flavor. Also, #9 sounds like something I would do!

  17. i felt the same way about Jessie towards the end. i hope the water situation gets fixed soon.

  18. Meg says:

I . . . have never had a squash blossom. I’m not even sure I know what they are. Can we still be friends? 🙂 And that water issue/presentation is pretty much my nightmare . . . I still have PTSD from the day I overslept and couldn’t wash my oily, disgusting hair the morning of my high school graduation. The worst!

  19. Christine says:

That photo of neon cauliflower…I could look at it all day long! Ice cream? A peach extravaganza or a berry-bash!

  20. Simply Life says:

haha, my priorities are often delicious foods too 🙂

  21. As far as getting to work vs getting to the farmers market – sometimes it’s all about priorities right? 😉

Maybe some squash blossom ice cream will manage to tempt your building owners to keep the water on during key times!

P.S. love these “coffee talk” posts, Joanne!

  22. my husband has to get up at 5 for his new job sooo we’ve gotten pretty talented at going to bed by 10 so we aren’t completely worthless the next day. it is SO hard…i feel ya on the going to bed early thing!

  23. Joni says:

I have been holding on to this ice cream idea all summer and decided you might be the right person to make it happen: coffee ice cream with doughnuts. You’re welcome.

  24. I am so with you on wanting to eat red, white and blue EVERYTHING. It’s literally all I’ve been eating for the past few weeks and is probably gonna continue into this holiday weekend! LOL. Oh, and I’m obsessing over that gorgeous cauliflower. SO PURTYY! 😉

  25. The no water / presentation combination sounds rather unfortunate.

How about sparkling red ice cream? I recall a red velvet variety you could pull out… 🙂

  26. I need special motivation to get out of bed early, too. Although having a 2-year-old crawl in to my bed every morning singing and demanding to watch TV at the crack of dawn has made it a little easier to get up as of late. Sigh.

  27. Kate says:

We are in full fledged ice cream mode over here. Right now our freezer has french vanilla, two kinds of chocolate ice cream, apricot, and vanilla custard. And I’m making more apricot tonight because we’re running low.

  28. I totally understand about being able to pop out of bed for something you really really wan to do. Going to a Farmer’s market is so uplifting. Hard to put words to why that is. I fell the same way in a plant nursery and a library. Now no hot water and a presentation—OMG!!!! I hope that you played the role that you were spankin’ clean and that went well.

  29. Veronica says:

I have never had a squash blossom and probably never will because I hear more about their elusiveness than anything else and if I end up loving them, I’m afraid I’ll go mad trying to track them down – lol.

  30. Oh that cauliflower is just gorgeous! No wonder you get up early.
I see no problem with eating red white and blue for the next week! I think I’ll join you. 🙂

  31. Love Breaking Bad. Watched the last season all one after the other from the DVR. Took several days but it was worth it. Cold showers are the absolute worst thing ever. I always try to be in before my daughter showers. That girl will drain a hot water tank like there is no tomorrow!

  32. Your dedication to squash blossoms is amazing! Feel like coming to Montreal? I went to the farmers market by my house this weekend and they had sooooooo many!! Also, please make a fruity ice cream. I’d love you EVEN MORE!

  33. When we finished Breaking Bad…I cried…for days. But then Scandal came along and all was right with the world again.

I want to dive into those buckets of cauliflower. Gorgeous!

  34. Hotly Spiced says:

I’m thinking squash blossoms are zucchini flowers? I love them. That’s awful about the water situation – timing! Don’t tell anyone but I haven’t yet watched a single episode of Breaking Bad! What about licorice ice cream. When I was little there was an ice cream parlour near by and when I had enough money for a scoop, I’d always order licorice xx

  35. Joanne, your Wednesday coffee talks always make me laugh! Congratulations on the squash flowers!! Now you have to make something really impressive with them.
I feel you on the lack of a shower thing. We are currently living with my husband’s mum who is having her bathroom re-done this week. Not only do we not have a shower (I’d better not tell you how long for) but 2 nights ago we didn’t even have a toilet! Hmmm (don’t worry, we did stay elsewhere!)

  36. cheri says:

Hi Joanne, what a week you are having, love the way you always put a positive spin on things. We are just enjoying plain ole vanilla bean ice cream right now, goes with everything.

  37. squash blossoms? neon cauliflower? I’d like to see what you decide to do with them. Except ice-cream. I’d like figs or cherries or peaches or all of them put together nicely.

  38. Is it bad that I sort of was with Walt for the entire series? I just kept wanting him to become good again. The entire time I was just like, Walt, come onnn!!!!

  39. I can’t function if I go to bed too late. I hope you find some more squash blossoms.

  40. Shannon says:

chocolate salted caramel or peanut butter stracciatella 🙂

  41. Christina says:

If I could roll into the office after 9am….ahhh that would be lovely ????

  42. Reeni says:

I need some of that beautiful cauliflower in my life! Squash blossoms are a rarity where I live too – I haven’t seen them yet but in a few more weeks I think they’ll be easier to find. One can hope.
