farmer's market

1. The best part of farmer’s marketing? Bringing home random vegetables and forcing the.boy to eat things I’ve never heard of.

2. This week’s crazy find was lemon cucumbers. Pretty much the same as regular cukes, but such a great color. And they totally freaked him out. Win/win.

3. Feeling so wedding accomplished this week now that our bridal shower invitations are sent and bridesmaids dresses are basically picked. Now I can take another two month hiatus from planning, right?

4. Are you guys watching Restaurant Start-Up? It’s basically like Shark Tank for foodies. I can’t tell whether I love it or hate it, but so far I just want to strangle the two guys who were on the one episode I’ve seen. But in an I-can’t-stop-watching-it kind of way.

5. I may have gone a little bit overboard on the corn this weekend. Do we think serving it at every meal for two days straight is overkill?

6. But if I’m going to make everything on my Corn, Sweet Corn Pinterest board before summer is over, what other options do I have?!

7. Do you guys ever get stuck on a cookbook and find yourself making EVERYTHING from it? That’s what’s going on with me and Ready for Dessert. This peanut butter and jelly linzertorte was my gateway drug and now I’ve made, like, three other recipes from it. In two weeks. Help.

8. Or just come over and pull up a fork.

9. Tomato, basil, mozzarella on bread with a drizzle of balsamic syrup = my latest obsession.

10. Imagine if I added corn on top.

  1. My friend was just telling me to watch that show… I feel like it definitely has the potential to drive me insane, though! Some of these reality shows get painful.

And I’ll come help you eat the corn and baked goods:-)

  2. So exciting that your wedding is coming right around the corner! I picked up purple string beans from the farmer’s market and thought I’d freak the boys out with them, but they actually turned green after I steamed them. As for corn, I can’t help but pick up loads of it every week from the farmer’s market. It’s so sweet!

  3. debbie says:

I love the combination of tomato, basil and mozzarella. It is just so good. I had gotten stuck on a cookbook many years ago. An old one….Doubleday Cookbook. I used it when I first got married all the time. It’s still the best cookbook I have ever come across. It’s old (1975) but at that time if that cookbook didn’t have it in there, then it didn’t exist! I love old cookbooks!

  4. I love Shark Tank but hadn’t yet heard of Restaurant Start-Up – I’ll have to check it out!
Def overload on the corn while you can. I don’t see any problem with that! 🙂

  5. Lemon cucumber?! COOL! I bet it would look great in photos! Also, a two month hiatus from wedding planning makes me laugh so, so, hard. It’s never endiiiiiinggggggg….until the wedding is over and then it’s just hard to figure out what to plan next. Lastly, we need more engagement photos AND need to know more about your bridesmaid dresses (same style? same colour? etc.). I’m so excited!!!!

  6. I’d be disappointed in you if you WEREN’T eating corn at every meal. Corn season is just a few precious weeks, you MUST take advantage!

  7. bellini says:

Yes do add corn on top Joanne;-)

  8. I’ve never seen lemon cucumbers. And yes the Farmers Market is amazing! Love the things to gaze and wonder at.
Yes, I’ve totally got stuck on one cookbook before. But usually I have no regrets about it. 🙂
    Have an awesome day Joanne!

  9. Barbara says:

Ummmm….a hiatus from wedding planning? Ain’t gonna happen. 🙂
Lemon cucumbers are new to me; will be watching for them.
Have not watched that TV show….after your comment, think I will give it a pass. Way too much reality on TV.

  10. I’ve never come across lemon cucumbers! I do love random vegetable finds, even if sometimes my finds have no planned use and prove a little challenging to actually put into a dish. I hear you on cook book (and just dessert) addiction too.

  11. Meg says:

I would totally pull up a fork . . . I can only imagine the fantastic dishes coming out of your kitchen every day. And that’s great about the cookbook, actually — I’m a little envious! Though I own approximately ten million of them, I rarely grab them for research and/or meal-planning. I did get pretty good about seeking recipes from my Weight Watchers book in the early days, but I’ve fallen into another rut of making the same old/same old for dinners . . . hmm.

  12. cookbooks are my drug of choice too…We can rehab together!

  13. SallyBR says:

You know what I love? the exact same sandwich, open faced, with a very very small amount of black olive tapenade spread on the bread

    heaven!

  14. lol I loooove corn!!!

and hooray for wedding planning progress! I so can’t relate to wanting to take a break though, if there’s a day where I don’t wedding plan I get kinda sad lol

  15. Abby says:

ha! I love all the quirky fruits and veggies at farmers markets, those cucumbers look really fun!

  16. OMG wedding shower! Soooo exciting! I must say I havent’t been to a farmer’s market yet, that is my new mission for this weekend!

  17. danielle says:

Tomatoes are so good now – I have definitely eaten my weight in some caprese!

  18. If you make that peanut butter and jelly linzertorte again I will come over with my own fork – less clean up that way! 🙂
I am so intrigued by those lemon-cukes and “Restaurant Start-Up” – I really need to catch an episode!

  19. Heather says:

I sooo wish I had more options when it comes to fruits and veggies where I live. I always see such interesting fruits and veggies on blogs and can never find them myself! That settles it – I’m basing our next move entirely on finding a place that has an amazing selection of produce.

  20. Trisha says:

Yay for wedding planning accomplishments. I was like that too. It’s nice to knock some stuff out and then not have to think about it for a while. Totally craving that mozzarella/tomato/basil/corn/balsamic/bread combination right now!

  21. i have not heard of that show but will def. look it up. i think corn is approved in my opinion for this time of the year – every single meal, every single day.

  22. I’ve never seen a lemon cucumber. Wondered what it was in the photo and then you mentioned it.Maybe a corn and cuke salad? Love farmer’s markets!

  23. I need to check out Restaurant Start-up, sounds interesting! And those lemon cucumbers are definitely unique, I don’t think I have ever seen them before.

  24. Eileen says:

I think corn at every meal for two days straight is the only appropriate response to summer corn! And I say this as someone who served fresh corn for two dinners in a row just a couple days ago. 🙂

  25. Corn ftw! Ain’t nothing wrong with that =)

  26. Joyti says:

I’ve seen but never had lemon cucumbers.

Have you done corn ice cream? I don’t remember seeing it on here. I had it once, it’s actually pretty good.

  27. Samantha says:

Yeah…definitely having a sweet corn, basil and smoked mozzarella omelet for dinner. Corn at every meal is not overkill at all. And yes to the cookbook thing. Every time I buy one. It might be a problem.

  28. Kate says:

I’m very into watermelon cucumbers right now. They’re like cucumber jelly beans!

  29. alyssa says:

What channel is that show on Joanne? I never heard of it! Can you stream it (we don’t have cable)?

  30. Christina says:

Tomato basil and mozz on everything please 🙂 I feel like I would like this show….

  31. I completely agree with being stuck with certain cookbooks! My favorite pastime is to browse through cookbooks 🙂

  32. Zainab says:

Hahha please add corn to everything!! It’s the best idea. I am hooked on the Bridal BHG cookbook. Make a recipe from it at least once a week…it’s so bad how hooked I am lol! Your wedding is so close…soon there will be squashes in season and you will be a married woman!!!

  33. I’m on a mission this weekend to find those lemon cucumbers!

  34. Monet says:

Oh goodness. That restaurant show sounds like it could suck me in fast. Thank goodness we don’t have a TV here!

  35. Danguole says:

Love lemon cucumbers! I have always wanted to create recipes with them, but it’s like… Why. They taste exactly like regular cucumbers but are harder for people to find! So I kept buying them and just eating them. End of story.

  36. My goal now is to freeze some corn. Apparently you can just cut it off the ears, put it in an even layer and throw it in a bag once it’s frozen. Now we can have corn year round. Woo Hoo!

  37. P says:

I haven’t seen Restaurant Start-Up, but I do like Shark Tank so maybe I should seek it out 😀

  38. Reeni says:

I would probably pass right by those lemon cucumbers thinking they were some kind of Asian fruit! I love how you’re not afraid to try new veggies. I’m kind of stuck in a rut when it comes to that.

  39. I remember one day eating a lemon cucumber like an apple before my manfriend, and it totally freaked him out, too!

  40. Roz says:

I have to stay clear of Farmers’ markets simply because I can’t keep up with using up and canning what I have in my own gardens….it’s been a banner year. Congrats on getting those invites out and picking out the bridesmaid gowns . . . and no, don’t think you can take 2 months off kiddo! But have fun with it all anyway!
    Roz

  41. There’s never too much corn! And yay for mystery veggies!
