salad a day

1. I’m putting myself on a salad-a-day challenge until the wedding. According to the Macy’s Registry website, that is 109 days of greens. But I started yesterday, so 110 days of greens!

2. And reds and yellows and oranges and croutons. Who’s with me?

3. OUR FIRST REGISTRY GIFTS CAME YESTERDAY! I am now the proud owner of two paprika Fiestaware place settings, one domed cake stand, and a set of Lodge cast iron skillets. The.Boy is already planning ways to convince me to get rid of my mismatched plate collection. To him, I say “HA”.

4. This tote bag. I need.

5. Cappuccino potato chips. How many ways can I throw up in my mouth? WHY IS THIS EVEN A THING.

6. The prepackaged food world must have it out to get me because I was also minorly traumatized last week when I walked into the grocery store across the street from my apartment and discovered Candy Corn M&M’s. On sale. Does anyone else but me realize that it is AUGUST. (<–don’t answer that.)

7. When you use five egg whites to make a meringue-based frosting, it’s like the universe is basically ordering you to make ice cream with the leftover yolks. Or at least that’s how I’m interpreting it.

8. Get your ice cream bowls ready.

9. I have been reading The Goldfinch for FIVE MONTHS NOW. It’s not that I don’t REALLY LIKE IT because I do…it’s just that books seem so much longer when you read them on your iPad.

10. What’s up with that?

Had a little giggle at that tote bag. So cool!
Also, looking forward to your ice cream recipe – I made a chai tea one this weekend … and a milo one. Can’t get enough ice cream (even though it’s still winter on our side). 🙂

  2. Megan says:

Agree on the ice cream! I bought The Goldfinch but then gave it to my mom to read before I read it. You just reminded me I need to get it back so I can finally read it!

  3. I saw the candy corn M&M’s in the store too (in July) – waaaay too early for that!
Ummm, can’t wait for your ice cream recipe 🙂

  4. I pretty much had a salad a day leading up to the wedding too! It’s fun actually! Also, it took me forever to finish the Goldfinch too!! It’s so long!! haha

  5. Lauren says:

I love when wedding presents came in. And boys do not and will never understand mismatched plates.

  6. My boss brought in a bag of cappuccino potato chips for everyone to try. They’re surprisingly good. If you don’t like coffee they’d be pretty gross, but otherwise they’re just sweet and salty goodness. We were having celebratory ice cream, so I actually crushed some on top and it was incredible, don’t judge!

  7. Oh the cappuccino chips – bleh! They will undoubtedly make some “10 Foods That Should Never Have Existed” list in about 5 years. On the other hand, that ice cream you mentioned………….

  8. Meg says:

I’m not even going to lie: when our wedding registry items began arriving, I was struck by the urge to run dancing around our apartment like a madwoman . . . it was so exciting. Like the power of every childhood Christmas wrapped into one bow-wrapped white package again and again. WOO!!

Also, has anyone actually tried the cappuccino chips? We mock them, but I must reserve my judgment until I’ve tasted them myself. I feel like I only see photos people snap in the store without shelling out the cash, to which I say: in the name of science, we have to give them a fair shake! (Guess I know what I’m doing on my break today.)

  9. Could you add an extra ice cream maker to your registry for me? I think all the yolks are a clear sign that you need to use your wedding as an opportunity to gift me one…

  10. Seriously. It IS August–I despite seeing all that holiday stuff in the stores already! I swear I saw halloween candy in the grocery store a months ago…

Also! Super exciting about the registry gift! I’m still finalizing mine, and realizing that I’m running out of things to add (also, I’m worried everything I want is expensive).

Laughed out loud at the cappuccino chip comment! You read my mind. WHY IS THAT A THING?!

  11. Leah Davis says:

Getting the first few wedding gifts is so exciting!!! You also see which ones of your friends are UBER on the ball with that kind of thing! haha. Enjoy this fun time!! I haven’t started the Goldfinch yet – worried that it will take me forever to get through too!!

  12. alyssa says:

Books take me forever if I ready them digitally. I am still old school when it comes to reading!

  13. sandra says:

A salad a day? I am with you – working my way down 5-10 pounds.
But do you recommend The Goldfinch? I am in need of a new read.

  14. Eee! So jealous of your wedding presents! Esp the skillets—I so need a few new ones. 😉 And omg I’ve seen those cappuccino chips before and everytime I do, I gag. Seriously, WHY would anyone eat something so wrong?!
P.S. Cannot WAIT for your ice cream recipe! 😀

  15. Roz says:

I wish I had your discipline. I’d love to eat like a rabbit for even just 14 days for a 2-week jump start of a longer-term diet. But then I’d have carb cravings far too badly. I remember how thin I was for my wedding . . . cherish it. When you’re 60, you’ll understand! I, too, have a hard time reading books on a screen and hope real books never become a thing of the past. Happy Wednesday!

  16. I love you salad a day challenge and I totally think it is an AWESOME idea! Plus the way you make salads I know you will be eating good! Kale FTW!

  17. Zainab says:

Hahha that tote bag is perfect!! And boy…I need to join on this salad a day mission!

  18. i have been wanting to read goldfinch too but if its taking you that long, i might have to reconsider it.

  19. Heather says:

I just saw those chips in the store the other day and while I like my fair share of strange combos… those did not sound appealing in the slightest. Ugh. Yum salad, though.

  20. I saw cappuccino potato chips in the store and thought I was hallucinating. WHYYY?

Also, in addition to Halloween candy, Costco just put out their winter gloves and coats and such. I died a little bit on the inside.

  21. cheri says:

So funny about the dishes, my husband does not like my mis-matched glasses either, and I love them. Anyway, how fun to start receiving gifts!!!

  22. That salad looks gorgeous! I also need one of those tote bags, by the way. I’ve read only 5 pages of the Goldfinch so far, so I’d say you’re doing way better than I am!

  23. Mismatched plates are the best. You get to benefit from multiple plate designs without needing to store multiple complete plate sets 🙂

  24. I LOVE the idea of mismatched plates!

  25. Kathleen says:

    1. I was in Publix the other day, and I actually reached out to pick up a bag of cappuccini potato chips, mainly because I am morbidly curious to see just how awful they can be. My daughter grabbed my arm and said, “No. Please no.”

    2. When I was getting married, I refused to have a gift registry on the grounds that it was just plain greedy bad manners. twenty-four years later, I am still wondering how I could have been so very very foolish.

    3. Stick with THE GOLDFINCH. It’s worth it. I’m used to my kindle now, and when I read an older book recently that is not available on kindle, it seemed a very clumsy way to read!

  26. Kate says:

I saw the cappuccino chips at the store too! So weird.

  27. yay fiesta!!! i have 4 different colors…and i am totally obsessed! it took me a long time to read the goldfinch too. i enjoyed it but it definitely wasn’t the hype that some people told me it was. 🙂

  28. Beth says:

Oh no! I haven’t started The Goldfinch yet and I need it read by September book group. I have a hard copy and I’m hoping that makes all the difference. I can’t even start it until I finish We Need New Names – and I was thinking about shoehorning The Waste Land in there too. (What is wrong with me??)

I’m hoping we see a lot of those 110 salad recipes on your blog. BTW – 110 Days of Greens? Excellent title for a cookbook.

  29. eeeeeeeee! registry gifts! so exciting!!!!!!!

    also-ew….cappuccino chips…

  30. Julia says:

YES all over the tote bag! Yes, yes, yes!! 😀

  31. Danguole says:

Wait, you get to get registry gifts BEFORE you actually get married? That’s… Interesting *schemes*.

  32. Pam says:

I need to eat greens daily too – I am in! The tote is adorable and the cappuccino chips make me nauseous too. YUCK.

  33. AH I am reading the Goldfinch, too! Just started it a couple of weeks ago and so far really enjoying it. And I can’t wait to see what kind of ice cream you have coming next:-)

  34. Christine says:

I look forward to hearing about all your salads. Every summer (from May until mid-Nov.) I have salads for dinner. Can’t bear the idea of heating up the kitchen when it’s 100F, which it’s been now for far too many weeks. You’ll love having the Fiestaware, I have it and never tire of it like previous dish sets.

  35. Kim Tracy says:

No Way can you get rid of your mismatched plate collection!! You NEED all those plates:)

  36. Christina says:

Mismatched plates are the only way to go 🙂

  37. Monet says:

I’ve been waiting for goldfinch to come out in paper back. I read SO SLOWLY now that I have a baby!

  38. Funny, I find that books take quicker to read on my tablet 🙂

  39. tigerfish says:

I am with you on rainbow salads and Lodge cast-iron skillets 🙂

  40. Kelly says:

Yay for wedding gifts – mismatched plates are so much more fun 🙂 Haha and that tote bag is just awesome!

  41. Haaa! Haaa! I have yolks in my fridge right now for ice cream too! They were left over from making the frosting for my S’mores cupcakes!

  42. So exciting about the registry gift, Joanne!!! Love your comment “WHY IS THIS EVEN A THING”… hahhahaah! Cappuccino chip?? Really??!

  43. I eat salads pretty much every day, and most don’t even involve lettuce. So many ways to mix them up.

I was literally just about to order The Goldfinch . . . but now maybe not. I do always order traditional books though. I spend enough of my day looking at screens.

  44. Reeni says:

Yay for wedding gifts! I don’t think I’ll ever have plates that match! #foodbloggerproblems The link isn’t working for the tote but I googled it and saw a picture – so cute!

  45. Cute tote bag. How exciting to be getting wedding gifts.

  46. Sarah says:

Salad a day! I’ve been doing that for a few months now. It’s not so bad! I find spinach instead of lettuce helps and also adding different textures like sprouts and avocados.
