wine and cheese

1. If today were yesterday, I would have told you all about how wine and cheese on Friday evenings with your coworkers is absolutely THE THING to do.

2. We could have talked about how at the ripe old age of 27, I now have the alcohol tolerance of a twelve year old and became a hot mess after only two glasses of wine.

3. But today is today, and after a day spent in the ER with a coworker who got some chemical burn splashes all up in her face and in her eye.

4. Followed up by what can only be termed an eviction notice found in my email inbox forcing the.boy and I to move from our current student housing apartment to one that is significantly smaller, WITH NO OVEN. Oh, and no biggie, just get out within FIVE DAYS.

5. I really just don’t have the energy.

6. Plus, I should probably be packing.

7. But am probably baking. And/or crying. Because, NO OVEN.

8. Can’t a girl catch a break?

  1. Hug. Let’s hope it is temporary!

  2. Sune Moolman says:

    Dear Santa,
I know I’m a few months early, but could Joanne and the.boy get a new apartment for Christmas?
I’m sure she’ll bake you some cookies. 🙂

  3. Sending hugs to you girlfriend…that is THE WORST. Seriously, I am crying for you! I hope you figure something out, which I know you will!!

  4. Ah I wish I could give you a GIANT hug:-( Seriously so unfair!

  5. So I say let’s have a couple glasses of wine and some cheese to talk thru this sucky issue. And maybe the wedding gods will send you an oven!

  6. Your student housing situation sounds dire. Hope they sort it out Joanne and that your coworker is not seriously hurt.

  7. Gosh, I’m so sorry! What an unnecessary stress. Thinking of you this week. Hang in there (and have more wine).

  8. Sues says:

No oven??? Please tell me that’s a joke… Or at least short-term? That sounds so cruel! Wish I lived closer so you could come use mine!

  9. Beth says:

Oh, Joanne, I’m so sorry. Please let us know if your coworker is okay – that sounds really serious. And the housing situation, too. Hope everything works out. Beth xo

  10. Meg says:

Oh my goodness, sending all the positive moving vibes your way — that is crazy. We won’t discuss the “no oven” situation because I think you’d have to hold me, too. <3 After all this, I think you should drink all the wine you like — tolerance or no tolerance! 🙂

  11. An apartment with no oven?? Yikes! Good luck with the packing girl, sending you some good juju from Boston!

  12. Joanne!!! Nooo 🙁 I am so sorry and sending you tons of love and positive thoughts and ugh I would be kicking and screaming about this whole situation. especially no oven 🙁

  13. I feel for you Joanne, and know how hard it is to move under pressure and to move to an even lesser space – I am even crying for you right now. However, think of it this way – it’s only temporary!! And you’ll feel a lot better. Have a good day in the meantime……

  14. SallyBR says:

I feel your pain. Now, let me just say if there is any way you can get a Breville Smart Oven (ask someone for an early wedding gift, maybe?) – go for it!

I don’t think you were reading my blog when I lived in Los Angeles for a sabbatical year – no oven. No real stove (two small burners in a camping type stove) – the Breville saved my life, big time. I even baked sourdough bread in it (the post in the blog about it is called Breville Sourdough)

you can do a lot with that oven, it is amazing, and I still have it and use it all the time particularly in the Summer when I don’t want to turn on the big oven and heat up the kitchen.

thinking of you, and best wishes for your co-worker recovery! hope it was not phenol, that can leave some nasty scars…

  15. Sounds like a lot to handle! But I’m sure you will like a champ! Check out the breville toaster oven. Seriously, you can cook like a whole chicken in there or a 12″ pizza. I love mine. I’ve made everything from creme caramel (6 ramekins fit) to roasted veg to casseroles in it. It’s awesome with a capital A. Preheats in no time and I almost prefer it to my actual oven. It might save your sanity. Besides, you deserve something new and shiny for yourself!

And now that I wrote that…. I read SallyBR’s comment. Clearly, I agree with her.

  16. I don’t understand why you have to move, that REALLY sucks! I totally get you on being a lightweight. Wine pack s hefty punch!

I hope you get an oven again soon and that you get a way better place! XOXO!

  17. Preeti says:

Go out and indulge on some cuppy cakes and a BIG hug from my side!!!!

  18. oh god..what a nightmare? I hope you are able to settle the situation with the housing. I had a huge issue with my housing people with bill payment they made me pay extra $500 and asked me to vacate. I was able to explain the situation i hope it works the same way for you. sending you hugs dear.

  19. Heather says:

No oven??? I hope for your sake it’s very temporary. The plus side of having the tolerance of a 12 year old, is that you can now easily drown your sorrows and stress much more quickly. 🙁

  20. Lori R. says:

Oh wow, what an ordeal. So sorry to hear about it! I hope the move goes well and that your friend is okay.

  21. elly says:

Oh no! I really hope the no oven thing is temporary. 🙁

  22. Whaaaaat? Forcing you to move in 5 days and no oven?!?! I mean, no oven…really?! I’m so sorry, Joanne! One of my friends actually had an apt with no oven and she managed to live there for 3 years. She ended up getting some kind of fancy toaster/countertop oven. Sending you a giant hug!

  23. Well a big BOO goes out to the housing-gods who failed to get you an oven. Worst case scenario, you can start a spin-off blog on toaster oven cooking. Too soon for jokes?

SO sorry you’re going through chaos right now! Perhaps wine and cheese night can make more than one appearance per week for the foreseeable future.

  24. Kinsey says:

Ugh I am so sorry to hear about the oven! I hope that everything gets worked out. Can’t a private school get their act together on this business? Seriously!

  25. Zainab says:

Virtual hugs my friend. Life is being a bitch.

  26. arent they required to give you more notice so you can plan? sucks! No oven sounds like a much worse problem – hopefullyy that breville one everyone is referring to might save the day!
the fact that you are out drinking instead of worryin about all this just means you’ve got your priorities straight, in my book atleast 🙂

  27. Joanne – that just is horrible 🙁 I’m so sorry – hoping that today looks brighter and that the no oven situ. is only temporary 🙁 *hugs*

  28. Chloe says:

What an awful situation all around … The Breville is a good idea though. We have one and love it too! Sending good thoughts your way!!!

  29. Christina says:

Five days! No Oven!! What!??? 🙁 thinking of you! more wine may be the answer.

  30. Yikes. No oven? I can’t even imagine.

  31. I thought for sure something would come up and you weren’t going to get the boot. So sorry to hear that this is all happening. Love your humorous spin on it though Joanne.

  32. Kate says:

I would suggest reading up on blogs where they bake in the dishwasher, but I’m thinking if there’s no oven, there’s probably not a dishwasher. Hugs.

  33. sandra says:

Eeks no oven. I feel for you – I lived without an oven for 5 years in an SRO in a very intense relationship (had to be – due to no space) and survived. But I should mention this was well before my food blogging days and the.biy du jour was the cook of the pair, making it significantly easier to deal with. I did always miss baking cookies, though. Could you rent an oven??

  34. Danguole says:

Ack, so much sucky right there. So sorry to hear all that! Where’s your third glass of wine when ya need it?

  35. DAAAAAMN. I’d say that all calls for something deep fried. My littles went back to school today. Full days for both of them now. Been looking forward to this for 8 years. So, naturally I cried all morning.

  36. Jessica K says:

We had a very similar emergency move during wedding planning and I was so stressed that I didn’t even get upset, I was just kinda sad. On a no oven note, we just got a Breville mini smart oven that works AMAZINGly well. It really and truly bakes things. I even baked a pan of eggs for breakfast sandwiches and they were perfectly even and cooked in the exact time I expected. It is kind of a lot of money, but maybe you can con someone into an early wedding gift.

  37. debbie says:

That’s awful. Can’t imagine not having an oven. On some episodes of International House Hunters there have been times when apartments have no ovens and this seems pretty frequent in other countries. Hope things work out for you soon Joanne. No oven definitely sucks.

  38. Mary says:

It’s absolutely NOT fair! forget 2 glasses – you need the bottle! best of luck and hope that pesky oven issue gets sorted out soon! you are a very talented young lady – better days are yet to come:)
    Mary

  39. Hotly Spiced says:

I can’t believe you’re only given five days to pack up and get out of there – it takes me five days to do the cleaning up after we’ve gone! And no oven? It must be the tiniest kitchen. What do they expect you to do? Eat out? And to top it off, someone gets chemical burns. What a week xx

  40. Kelly says:

Oh no, that is terrible 🙁 Sending hugs to you and hopefully it’s temporary and better things are coming your way soon.

  41. Lynn says:

Now I see the story about moving – so sorry that has happened to you!!! No oven would be the worst. How could someone think giving you five days to regroup is OK?

  42. Sofía says:

I hope you can find something better (at least with an oven) and about the alcohol tolerance, I’m 22 and after a glass of wine I’m all giggles so don’t feel bad. I’m worse!

  43. Christine says:

Oh my dear! How dreadful! I hope the less desirable space is just short term. What a pain in the derriere. How can a living space not have an oven? That’s insane. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

  44. Reeni says:

I hope everything goes OK! Well, as ok as it can because NO OVEN! I feel your pain. Hope you can get a portable one! #foodbloggerproblems

  45. Johanna GGG says:

what NO OVEN – this is not hong kong! That sounds crazy. In fact it is the real estate equivalent of chemicals in the face. You NEED to bake cakes because they are amazing – don’t they realise that – send them a cake

  46. P says:

Sounds like it’s been a crazy week! And that is seriously too short off a notice…how can anyone think five days is enough time to get someone to move out??
