alice's tea cup

1. Pumpkin scones make all days better. Even Mondays.

2. And yes, I know it is still AUGUST and SUMMER and I’m not even trying to suggest that it’s actually time for pumpkin yet. But at Alice’s Tea Cup, it’s always time for pumpkin scones. Always. They’re kind of the best thing since sliced bread.

3. After the 143 square foot apartment debacle the.boy and I did some major Craigslist searching and…I think we found a place. I don’t want to say anything for SURE for sure because nothing will be officially signed until Friday, but we were approved by the management company and will (hopefully) move in next Saturday. Fingers crossed!

4. And yes, it has an oven. And a whole separate bedroom. With a door. I won’t even know what to do with myself.

5. And did I mention there is a Whole Foods being built TWO BLOCKS AWAY. My excitement is palpable.

6. The Goldfinch and I are less than a hundred pages away from being done with each other. What do I need to read next??

7. The best place to buy a gorgeous but not too expensive reclaimed wood dining room table. And…..GO!

8. I’m kind of into this one from Macy’s. I’ll probably end of splurging on it, but I do wish it was a few hundred dollars cheaper.

9. PS – I totally spent all day at work yesterday looking at tables online. Don’t tell anyone.

I got a catalog out of the blue the other day – homedecorators.com is their website. I kind of like the Aldridge Dining Table and the price seems right. 🙂 I like a round table.

  2. Yay! Fingers crossed this apartment works out!

  3. Emma says:

I love your coffee talk. It always baffles me that we wait until Autumn to enjoy pumpkin baked goods when we can (and should!) make them all year round. The Goldfinch is a fabulous book, if you haven’t already you should read Donna Tartts other stuff. Oh, and I love the table… splurge!

  4. Haha, you crack me up. YAY for the apartment! Will keep my fingers crossed this one works out! Awesome there’s a Whole Foods being built so close! That’s the best.

  5. A separate bedroom with a door? A real door? Wow, the luxuries of NYC apartments 😉
Splurge on the table! Do it! It’s gorgeous + on sale + if you sign up for a credit card they normally give you 30% off. I’m not sure if it’s good on tables or not, , but worth a try to save 2 hundo

  6. danielle says:

Any season is pumpkin season as far as Im concerned. World Market has some great dining tables.

  7. Beth says:

I’ve just started The Goldfinch, and need to be done by the third week in September. What are the odds?

Also, for your next book, I’m thinking you could use short stories. (After reading the Goldfinch, perhaps you’ll be looking for quicker resolutions?) I’d recommend Dear Life, by Alice Munro. Beautifully written.

  8. You’ve suddenly given an incredible urge for a scone. I wonder why?

I hope you get the new place! With an oven. Woot! 🙂

    Happy Wednesday girl!

  9. Meg says:

So glad to hear you’re moving closer to getting your new place . . . I can imagine how stressful that has been just from my own recent dealings in real estate (blech), and I’m sending all the good vibes your way!

The Goldfinch has intimidated me, and I’m really not sure why? I’m halfway through Jean Kwok’s Mambo In Chinatown and really enjoying it. Kwok is a fantastic writer. It follows the life of a young dishwasher in New York City’s Chinatown as she transforms — rather crazily — into a dancer. Pretty good stuff.

  10. This week will hopefully end well for you! Hope you have another pitcher of sangria close by 🙂

  11. Monica says:

Your Wednesday coffee talks are always entertaining, Joanne. Crossing my fingers on that apt. for you. 🙂

  12. AH crossing my fingers for you!!! And yes, it is ALWAYS time for a pumpkin scone at Alice’s. Also, love that table.

  13. A whole bedroom and no room-mate – so hoping this works out for yall!!
You’ve probably already done this – but I was wondering how the table pickings were on Craigslist?

  14. Lori R. says:

Ditto on pumpkin scones. I loved all the reclaimed tobacco barn wood tables friends had back in KY. There are quite a few around online in different areas. Good luck with your search and hooray for the possible apartment!

  15. SallyBR says:

You are fine with me… spending work time looking at dining tables is much better than playing video games like “a certain graduate student of ours who shall remain nameless”
    (sigh)

  16. Heather says:

Hooray! So glad it looks like you found a new apartment! As far as books… I feel like I’m so far behind and haven’t read The Goldfinch yet! I just picked up The Cuckoo’s Calling and am giving that a whirl.

  17. Super extra glad to hear about the potential new apartment! Fingers crossed!

  18. 143 square feet? Um…that’s…small. I am really into the “tiny house” movement. Love them, and tiny apartments and such. So, if it were laid out well, it could work. But man, New Yorkers take it to a whole other level.

I happily live in a small house with 286 square feet per person (1146/4). Which is 2x that apartment.

  19. OMG I am soooooooo happy you found a place- the fact that if has a Whole Foods being built nearby means it’s fate!

  20. Pam says:

I’d eat pumpkin baked good anytime of the year! I am happy for you & your apartment – fingers are crossed.I love the tables at Cost Plus World Market – the wood is beautiful. I am not sure if you have those stores back east or not.

  21. Yay for new apartments! I hope it works out. Also, I totally do some of my best online shopping at work, so your secret is safe with me. 🙂

  22. YM says:

I just started reading “Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper – A sweet and sour memoir of eating in China” by Fuchsia Dunlop. I am only 3 chapters in but already want to visit the remote area (possibly no longer remote).

Good luck with the apartment. I thought the NY apartment sans an oven was a myth, but apparently not!

  23. Zainab says:

Yay!! I hope apartment works out and you get out of school system!!

  24. My sister Liz always shops on Overstock. Com and swears by it.
Good luck with the new apartment!

  25. Kate says:

Fingers crossed on the new place.

  26. I scored a sweet table from the brooklyn flee one year! Might be worth looking into…fingers crossed for ya!

  27. I also just got a new apartment! Moving in on the 2nd! Fingers crossed for you!

  28. Lol 143 square feet?! My college dorm was that size!

  29. I have a serious weakness for pumpkin scones! And, online furniture shopping.

  30. Danguole says:

YAY for you not getting evicted! And scones. But mostly for the roof over your head (and pots/pans).

  31. Christina says:

An oven, yay! Happy dance over here for you 🙂 Funny, today I blogged about the reclaimed wood table I just redid. A friend found it on Craigslist and all it needed was a bit of stain. Great minds 🙂

  32. Krista says:

It is wild and stormy here today so pumpkin scones sound like pure bliss. 🙂

  33. Yay for the new apartment! Hoping that works about, because let’s be honest: Having a Whole Foods a stone’s-throw away would be pretty awesome. JEALOUS. 😉

  34. Hotly Spiced says:

That is such good news. What a relief. And how lovely to have your own bedroom. All that extra space as you start your married lives. Excellent. I hope all goes according to plan on Friday xx

  35. Sarah says:

Pumpkin scones sound delicious – and such good news about the apartment! 🙂 best wishes everything goes smooth with the apartment, and a nice dining table to put in it!

  36. Sues says:

Living a couple blogs from a Whole Foods would be both the best and the worst thing ever… LOVE that dining table!! And it’s a pretty good price compared to many I’ve seen! Good luck on the apartment 🙂

  37. Monet says:

I will make all future real estate decisions based on proximity to Whole Foods. So your apartment just became a lot more desirable to me 😉

  38. Leilani says:

I wish I could find pumpkin scones in my area – they are the best!
For a new book, I recommend Room by Emma Donoghue or The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey – both beautiful in their own ways.

  39. Great round up of links, I always love reading your coffee talk posts. Thanks Joanne!

  40. Kelly says:

Yay, good luck and fingers crossed you get the apartment 🙂

  41. Good luck with the apartment! I’m just finishing Ayelet Waldman’s latest book Love & Treasure, and have really loved it. Also, it’s coming out as a movie soon, but Jonathan Topper’s book This Is Where I Leave You is hilarious. I hope the movie does it justice.

  42. Oh, dining table decisions. It took us ages to choose one, and in the mean time, we were eating in very odd spots! Our final choice won’t help you given it is a UK brand, but your Macy’s ‘want’ looks gorgeous. Definitely worth the splurge 🙂

  43. Megan says:

Sending good luck vibes! I am a crazy person who probably needs a custom-made dining table at some point because I really want a square one that seats 8, with 2 seats on each side. And finding one in the right style and color is not easy! That farm table at Macy’s is a great price compared with others I’ve seen.

  44. Christine says:

Yay on finding a new apartment! So happy for you two. Like the dining table a lot even though it is a bit pricy. Remember you’ll probably keep it for quite a few years especially if you buy something you really like and aren’t just “making do”. The pumpkin scones have been bookmarked (thank you very much) for making once hell…er, I mean summer has retreated in Nov. 🙂

  45. I am happy to hear that you found a different apartment. That had to be so stressful. I hope the new place will be wonderful.

  46. Reeni says:

Can’t wait to eat something pumpkiny! I hope the apartment works out – LOVE the table!

  47. sandra says:

So glad to hear that you are now out of the student housing loop and living in your very own place – with an oven. Love the table… but I feel it could be got cheaper – maybe have a friend make one?? I have been seeing pumpkin stuff all over the place – summer is the new autumn

  48. There was a supposed shopping center within walking distance from us that had a golf course and Whole Foods. Bought, developed. Done deal. And then the economy went in the shitter, so it never happened. Paul said, “you didn’t really need another grocery store, did you?” And then I didn’t talk to him for 2 days.

  49. Alice’s Tea Cup is my faaaaaaave! I’ve been thinking about taking Ian there, and you’re not making it easy to resist that urge!
