The truth about being a food blogger is that it’s not all gourmet dinners, edible glitter, and multi-colored paper straws.

Sometimes I’ve cooked or baked all.day. and there is still NOTHING to eat at dinnertime, either because everything was a total fail or because one cannot live on chocolate chip cookies alone. (I mean, we could, but we probably wouldn’t feel too great. )

On days like those, I reach for the takeout menus. And to be honest, though it feels like a good idea in the moment, I regret it almost.every.time – it’s greasy and heavy and never makes me feel like a million bucks the way a good healthy homemade meal does.

Like most people, I have resolved to “BE HEALTHIER” in the new year, and part of that means not ordering in Chinese food at least once a week just because I’m too tired or don’t feel like trekking it into the kitchen again. So when BistroMD offered to send me three days worth of meals to try and review, I jumped at the opportunity.

Unlike other diet delivery systems in the US, BistroMD uses only natural WHOLE FOOD ingredients (seriously, I could pronounce everything on their nutritional labels) and it is the ONLY system that is physician-designed and chef-prepared. Because I love cooking from scratch, I probably wouldn’t want to turn to these for every meal every day, but they are a great option to have on hand for when you’re just too busy to cook or if you want an easy way to manage your weight loss.

Now – the money question. HOW DO THEY TASTE?!

They don’t have a super extensive list of vegetarian options, but I was able to try quite a few meals and I was definitely impressed. For breakfast, I tried the black bean omelet with plantains (pictured above) and the artichoke, spinach, and roasted red pepper frittata, both of which I loved. They also get bonus points for keeping me full until lunch.

In addition, the.boy and I got to try a few of their lunch and dinner options – four cheese ravioli (pictured above), vegetable chili, spinach ricotta crepes with waldorf apples, and the caramelized vegetable and three bean burritos. The one thing we both remarked on was how we couldn’t tell that they were “freezer meals”. They reheated incredibly well and tasted just as fresh as if they’d been made from scratch!

One of my favorite aspects of this program is that you are allowed, albeit ENCOURAGED, to snack. You get two snacks a day and these range from chocolate peanut dream crispy bars to white chocolate macadamia cookies (pictured below) to gelato. I wouldn’t say that any of these taste like full-calorie desserts, but they do satisfy a fierce sweet tooth in times of need.

BistroMD has quite a few menu programs to choose from, including one geared specifically towards women and a new gluten-free program. Each meal plan has between 1100-1400 calories per day, with 40-50% from protein, 20-25% from fat, and 30-35% from carbohydrates. This is a fairly  high protein:carb ratio, which can help you to stay fuller for longer. Each of the meals incorporates vegetables and often whole grains, which is a definite plus. Though it’s probably not something I personally would stick to for every meal, I can definitely see myself keeping a few of these on hand for those nights when I want to eat something healthy but just don’t feel like cooking. For someone who is too busy to cook or doesn’t like to cook but still wants to lose weight and eat healthy, they are definitely one of the best options out there, in my opinion. 1. I head to the kitchen pretty much every night to cook dinner, even if sometimes I don’t really want to. These sound like a great way to have a good, healthy meal to rely on when you don’t want to cook.

I’m sorry they don’t ship to Canada – sounds like they have a wonderful product. In the meantime, I’m definitely going to try to recreate that frittata. It sounds amazing!

  3. Kate says:

I love the idea of having breakfast already made in the morning. I can handle lunches and dinners, but breakfasts are always a “hmmmmm what can I make quickly” kind of meal.

  4. Katie says:

this looks great – shame they haven’t expanded to the UK yet!

  5. Hotly Spiced says:

I love how the meals are made with whole foods and how they give you a few snacks. One of the hardest things about these sorts of programs is that you often feel hungry so snacks are a great idea. The four-cheese ravioli looks great xx

  6. Tina says:

  11. Christine says:

What a perfect option not only for someone who doesn’t feel like cooking but for someone recovering from an illness. That’s when the whole concept of finding dinner becomes a real challenge. These look remarkably fresh for frozen food!
