blizzard 2015

1. I know the blizzard really hit hard in other places of the northeast, but in NYC, it was a total bust. Yet another instance of New Yorkers blowing things TOTALLY OUT OF PROPORTION. And now I feel totally self righteous that I did not buy bottled water or stock our pantry or buy a flashlight in preparation.

2. To be fair, I’m pretty sure we might have a candle that smells like birthday cake somewhere, but I have no idea where that could have come from. Definitely not Anthropologie. Ahem.

3. The.Boy and I have this ritual where we don’t go to the movies at all during the year, and then after the Academy Award nominations are announced we binge watch all the nominees. So far we’ve made it through Boyhood, The Imitation Game, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Into the Woods, and Selma.

4. Currently, Selma is the clear favorite.

5. What do we need to watch next?!?

6. Speaking of binge watching, I watched the past three episodes of Parenthood in a row yesterday afternoon. And I may or may not be in denial that this week’s show is going to be the LAST.EVER. No one can tug at my heartstrings like the Bravermans can. For real.

7. They really don’t make tv like that anymore.

8. Last week I coerced the.boy into signing up for the Brooklyn Half Marathon with me! Truth be told, I have been the laziest about running this winter and need some sort of motivation to get back into it. 13.1 miles of motivation, to be precise.

9. Scratch that. I have not been the laziest because the.boy has been the laziest. I’m really doing this for him and his cardiovascular health.

10. This article. Yes. (But to be fair, I really have the best coworkers.)

Blizzards sound totally crazy to me right now (glad everyone is safe though). We’ve been having total bikini and barbeque weather – wish I didn’t have to waste my summer in the office, boo hoo!!

  2. I’m with you on the snow! We got like 1/2 inch (no joke!) here in Alexandria (just outside of DC) – the crazy part is, schools were closed b/c of it! I’m hoping we get a little more snow – I want my winter, lol!

Love your movie tradition with the.boy, you guys are so cute!!

  3. I do the same thing with movies. . once awards season starts, it dictates what we watch. . dude, you have to watch American Sniper. Bradley Cooper is phenomenal. He better win. That’s all I’m saying. The husband watched The Imitation Game without me. . so I still need to catch up! freaking love Parenthood. One of my absolute fave tv shows! and hooray for the half marathon!!! you can do it! there’s no better way to get motivated than to just sign up and train! I ran my first half when I lived in SF. . I love running. . and lost 2 toenails during my training. tmi? good luck!!! so fun!

  4. It was a total bust here in Central PA too. Poor meteorologists can never get it right. It’s fine by me though. I’m not digging on shoveling much more.

I’ll have to check out Selma. Thanks for the recommendation!
    Happy Wednesday!

  5. NYC is always freaking out on the weather and frequently underdelivering lol-but at least you guys are fine!

and I agree-Parenthood is probably one of the most well done tv shows I’ve ever watched and I’m so sad it’s ending 🙁

  6. I’m glad you escaped the worst of the blizzard even if they blew it out of proportion. I guess a good snow storm would have been the perfect excuse to catch up on all of those movies!

  7. I don’t think I’ve seen a single nominated movie! Whoops! Oh.. and I’m kind of bummed that the storm was a letdown. I like when we are all forced to stay in:-)

  8. Meg says:

I was actually gulping air watching “Parenthood” last week, crying so hard that I really began to question why I put myself through it. But that show is SO GOOD. I’m going to have to save the final episode for when I’m in a good place, physically and emotionally . . . because it is going to destroy me. I just feel it!

  9. Mira says:

Glad you guys are doing well during the blizzard! Need to see Selma. Love that article, so true 🙂

  10. Mary says:

Wasn’t that non blizzard ridiculous!! We got a couple of inches – but yes a very good telly catch up day 🙂
    Mary

  11. SallyBR says:

Boyhood is my favorite. The Grand Hotel Budapest we turned off within the first half hour. We both despised it. Go figure… 😉

  12. Louanne says:

Yeah, we rarely go to the movies to see anything we want to see…we see what the boy-child wants to see, and I take home movies from the library for us. You absolutely need to watch Hector and the Search for Happiness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWFVAIbIkS4 If nothing else, read the book!

  13. I am a crazy prepper lady and need to tell you, you ought to have some emergency supplies in case you are stuck and can’t get to food. It could happen! Then you will be smug sitting there in your candlelit apartment eating soup, sipping wine, knowing your neighbors are sucking on a damp rag cause they didn’t have extra food! Yeah…I’m terrible….

Thanks for the heads up on Selma, we haven;t seen that one,

  14. Kinsey says:

We got over two feet and two snow days! It’s been amazing, especially since our campus has lots of hills for sledding.

  15. OMG – I just realized how true #5 was on that list! And #4!
Glad y’all were spared from a snowmageddon – though -to me- those pictures on TV of all the scarping and stuff looked pretty darn yucky! But y’all NYCers are a tough bunch!
I haven’t seen any of those movies yet – am so bad at movie watching – last year when we were snowed in for a couple of days because of the 3-4 inches we got (yes our city shut down), my daughter and I caught up on our movie list – but this year doesn’t look like we will!

  16. Sues says:

I can’t deal with tomorrow being the last Parenthood. CANNOT deal. We got some pretty serious snow here in Boston, but nothing we can’t handle 🙂

  17. Kelly says:

So glad the storm wasn’t as bad as they predicted and you guys are staying safe. Yay, way to go on signing up for the half marathon!

  18. Pam says:

We just watched The Grand Budapest Hotel this weekend – we thought it was funky and interesting. Selma is next on our list.

Glad you didn’t get buried by the storm!

  19. LOL! I need motivation to run too, the snow ain’t helping, we got 22″!! That was a lot for 24 hours!

  20. If you think you guys blow snow out of proportion, you should try being in the UK. Even if we have a light dusting of snow, everyone goes in to a total meltdown and panic-buys and thinks the whole country will close down.

  21. Way to go, Jo! I just started exercising for the first time in my life this past month and I’m hooked. One day, I’ll shoot for a marathon. Until then, you have my admiration and have inspired me!

  22. Zainab says:

I swear sometimes we lead the same life girl! I’m binging too the nominees right now and have made it through boyhood, grand Budapest and imitation game. Selma is next for us. Oh and also, we are watching Parenthood on Netflix like its crack. So good!! Up to season 5 now and I’m sad it’s going to be the last one before the current one on tv. Love the bravermans!!

  23. Thanks for the Selma recommendation. We loved Birdman – I think it’s a love it or hate it kind of movie, but the acting is outstanding and the filming is really creative.

Glad to hear that you’re not up to your eyeballs in snow like some are. Like this IG picture for example http://instagram.com/p/yaEt3Gmzga/?modal=true 😉

  24. I know the snow was a bust, but doesn’t it feel good to have power and not be stranded! Anthropologie birthday scented candles!! Must. Get. Some.

  25. Cute coffee talk! Aren’t we glad the snowstorm wasn’t so ugly? Thank god 🙂

  26. P says:

Yay! The Brooklyn Half sounds exciting! I’ve been lucky weather-wise and with my training and all…it definitely sounds like a challenge running in the snow!

I’ve seen Into the Woods…and that’s about it 😛 . Is The Theory of Everything a nominee for best picture? I want to see that for sure!

  27. Kate says:

See we’re the opposite – we don’t go to movies all year, and then after the nominations come out…we have no idea what movies they’re talking about 😉

  28. Kim says:

Clearly I need to start watching Parenthood. Everyone is raving about it. Maybe I should pray for a blizzard so I can start bingewatching!!

  29. Trisha says:

I’ve heard so much about parenthood. I feel like I need to get on that bandwagon! Exciting that you’re doing another half-marathon!

  30. blizzard was a joke! We got 3 inches of dusting and schools were closed!

  31. Hotly Spiced says:

I have a friend living in Brooklyn and I’m pretty sure she said on FB that yesterday was a ‘snow day’ so she had all three kids at home. I spoke to another friend this morning who took her family to NY in January and she said it was so unbelievably cold but no snow. She nearly froze to death visiting the Statue of Liberty. I also try to see as many of the nominated movies as possible but I’m very behind this year. I did see Unbroken which left me shattered – how can one person endure so much suffering and survive to live a productive life AND forgive those who so severely mistreated him. What a hero xx

  32. I think you’d really laugh if you saw how the UK coped with snow. I’m told that if it snows in London, pretty much at all, all the trains stop and no one can get anywhere. If a blizzard was forecast, I’m not sure how the country would cope!!

I like your movie watching approach – I still need to watch all of the ones you mention!

  33. im making my boyfriend sign up for 26.2 miles motivation, lets see if it will really workout because im freaking out a little bit too.. And thanks for sharing those movie list because i hardly watch movies but the Budapest one has been on my mind for a while.,must happen soon with selma.

  34. While I am glad that the blizzard wasn’t really…. anything, I am totally with you on the overreaction! Ha. Sorry. I couldn’t resist.
