Valentine's Day

1. The.Boy and I have this unspoken (okay…explicitly stated) agreement that I want nothing more for Valentine’s Day than for him to get me the kind of crazy expensive chocolate that I would never buy myself and, in exchange, I make him something crazy for dessert. I think he got the hang of it.

2. Oh, and by the way, that box of chocolate has two layers. Hold me.

3. Today is the Whole Foods Upper East Side opening! This is pretty much the most exciting thing that has ever happened to me. I mean, living ACROSS THE STREET from a Whole Foods…that’s pretty much every food blogger’s dream.

4. Also, can someone has to come take all of my credit cards away from me. NOW.

5. It’s totally reasonable for me to take the day off from work for this, right?

6. I’ve been reading before bed every night lately. It feels SOOOO good. I just finished Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty and am now diving headfirst into Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell.

7. What do I need to read next???

8. There are exactly SEVEN DAYS until my birthday. I feel like this means I should be eating cake every day…don’t you?

9. Calories don’t count during your birthday month. #FACT

10. (And if you tell me otherwise I will bite you. Really. Ask the.boy.)

I know The Goldfinch is sort of last year’s book, but I’m reading it right now and it’s hard to put down. Long though. I have book group meeting this Sunday night and am only about halfway through.

That chocolate looks decadent! Good job, the boy!

And I do love Whole Foods, but have been trying to stay away from the hot food bar. $$$

  2. Sune Moolman says:

Oh snap! You have your birthday on our wedding anniversary! 🙂
I’m definitely gonna start eating cake too!

  3. debbie says:

Joanne I just finished reading Anita Moorjani’s Dying to Be Me. A great book that is about a near death experience and how it changed her life. Oh, those chocolates look out of this world fantastic!

  4. Trisha says:

Those chocolates are gorgeous! Your unspoken agreement sounds perfect. As far as books, I love Bread and Wine by Shauna Niequist.

  5. We might be getting our first Whole Foods, too!! So I get it! You’ve got some exciting stuff going on, my friend!! Eat the cake!

  6. Yay for ALL the chocolate and SQUEAL to Whole Foods only short walk across the street. That would be both the best thing and the worst thing that ever happened to me, that’s for sure. Ha! 😉

  7. Yeah for the Whole Foods opening. I definitely think you need to take they day off of work to properly mark this occasion. And probably buy a few lottery tickets and cross your fingers too!

  8. Sues says:

I don’t even know what i would do if a Whole Foods opened across the street from me.

I also don’t know what I would do if I had that box of chocolates in front of me…

  9. ummm I would like to adopt your Valentines arrangement! Its perfect!

  10. I love your agreement! I’m all for beautiful and delicious chocolate no matter what the cost. That big box is calling my name!

  11. Oh boy did he do well! My kind of gift!! And calories do not count at all, so cake every day is a rule.

  12. Kelly says:

Yay for your birthday month, Whole Foods and this pretty box of chocolates! Love your Valentine’s arrangement!

  13. YAAAASSSSS- I love this eating cake everyday for a week idea of yours! I am gonna have to copy it for mine in September! And squeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllll – I don’t believe a WF’s is gonna be across the street from you!!!!

  14. Louanne says:

Eleanor and Park was a good read; another Rainbow Rowell title is Fangirl, which was good, too. Really liked The Girl on the Train. Recently finished All the Light We Cannot See and The Just City. Oh, and from one February birthday girl to another, the entire month is a free-for-all!

  15. Heather says:

Those chocolates look like heaven! I actually just finished reading Eleanor and Park and started reading The Princess Bride because I’ve never actually read it (and the movie is one of my favorites)! I also read The Girl on the Train recently like a few other readers if you haven’t checked that one out yet.

  16. Pam says:

What a beautiful box of chocolates! The.Boy. did good! Good luck living to Whole Paycheck, I mean Whole Foods. I have one just up the street from me and it’s very dangerous!

Happy early birthday… hope you get spoiled.

  17. Joanne, so many fabulous things .. that box of chocolate has two layers? The boy did good! and heck yeah take the day off 😛 I bet you since it’s the grand opening, there will be free food like everywhere 🙂 and happy early birthday!! yes to eating cake everyday. . at least one slice, right? 🙂

  18. Mira says:

Love chocolate!!! So glad you are getting a WF close to you!

  19. TWO LAYERS! He knows the way to a woman’s heart!

Have you read Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie yet? Definitely one of my favorite books I have read recently.

  20. Meg says:

Yay! What did you think of Big Little Lies?! I enjoyed the heck out of that one; Moriarty is an awesome writer. I’m adding most of her works to my Kindle so I can be ready to have something absorbing to check out at a moment’s notice. And those chocolates look amazing!

  21. Christine says:

OM! Those chocolates! Try Isabel Allende’s Daughter of Fortune and Portrait in Sepia. Yeah, older but they still suck you into this wondrous historical/fiction adventure.

  22. Ohhhh that chocolate!! Let’s see, to read next: Girl on the Train, The Rosie Project, The Universe Versus Alex Woods. Too many to list!

  23. Ha yes Joanne very exciting you are living across the street from wholefoods and reasonable that you would take the day off. I can’t believe you have enough time to read before bed!

  24. I’m not sure what kind of shop Whole Foods is, but it’s obviously a good one and I’m sure I’d be happy too if one opened across the road from me!
You’ve also just inspired me to start reading again. I used to read on the metro on the way to work but now I work from home and so the reading has gone by the wayside. Definitely a shame and … thanks for the book recommendations!

  25. I’m so jealous about WF across the street! I would so get in trouble…if that was me!

  26. OMG I loooooove that chocolate!! You make the best desserts so I see this as an even exchange!

  27. Joni says:

The Other Typist is amazing – like a combination of Gone Girl, The Great Gatsby, and Single White Female. I think they’re making a movie out of it. Also, you should read Gone Girl if you haven’t already.

  28. Happy early birthday, Jo! And 2 layers of fancy chocolates + cake every.single.day would make the best birthday ever!!

  29. Betty says:

Oh, I’d say he got the hang of the Valentine exchange. 🙂

  30. Marci says:

I worked at Union Square when that Whole Foods opened and you can bet I was there on opening day. Perfectly excusable to take a day off work. I just finished Station Eleven which I liked. Similar to Walking Dead without all the gross zombie stuff. Now I’m reading Girl on the Train, very engrossing.

  31. P says:

    Those chocolates—-I’m drooling!!

  32. You are so lucky about the Wholefoods. Enjoy the opening. Glad you enjoyed the book, I did too 🙂

  33. Love those chocolates! Love your deal 🙂
I’m reading The Glass Castle which is really good. Or you can try Blindness or Water for Elephants which are the past few books I have read.

  34. Caitlin Dunn says:

I have the same agreement re:chocolate and vday with my guy. It works wonderfully! I need to read that Liane Moriarty book…I loved her other one (the husbands secret). I just read “French Women Don’t Get Fat” and it’s a bit self-helpy, but really interesting!

  35. Hotly Spiced says:

That truly does look like the best box of chocolates. I hope you don’t have to share them. And the new wholefoods store. It’s like it was meant to be. How perfect! xx

  36. I usually don’t like boxes of chocolate, but this chocolate box looks so decadent. I hope you had fun indulging 😉

  37. Johanna GGG says:

you have reminded me I have joined a book club and need to read more – gorgeous chocolates and happy birthday – I must have missed it by now because I am so behind – hope you have already had a week of cake!
