brooklyn half

1. I definitely think we have a certain post half marathon glow, don’t you?

2. Or….that’s sweat. Yeah, probably just sweat.

3. So about the race. IT WAS HARD. This is my third year doing it and even though I knew I could finish it, there were definitely times when I didn’t believe it. It was super humid and for probably the first half, I felt like I was having trouble breathing and/or was nauseous. The.Boy was a trooper and stuck with me up until the last mile (when it was clear I was not going to try to crawl my way to the finish). We finished about a minute apart from each other, with final times of 1:57 and 1:58, respectively.

4. Would I do it again? Probably. I’m a glutton for punishment.

5. Last night I had the BEST late night meal with one of my blog friends who was in town (Erin of Well Plated) at Gramercy Tavern. Every bite was just…wow. And every minute of nonstop conversation was also…wow.

6. This was actually my first Danny Meyer  restaurant experience, which is a little shameful given that he’s pretty much an institution in NYC! I mean, SHAKE SHACK. Are you amazed I’ve never been there? SAME.

7. What were are thoughts on the Mad Men finale?? I’m still not sure how I feel. I think I wanted a little more closure for Don, but I’m SO glad we got some for Joan and Peggy. They deserve it!

8. This cake is SO spring. I just want to hug it.

9. FOUR WEEKS. The honeymoon countdown starts now.

10. Actually, one of my coworkers asked me if I had started packing already and I looked at her like she was crazy. Do people actually pack a month in advance? Am I missing out on something?

My husband and I had a great meal at Gramercy Tavern a few years ago, and we’ve been to the Shake Shack a couple of times. I’m not really surprised you hadn’t – I think we all miss out on the things in our own backyard. And I have never, ever heard of packing four weeks in advance. I’m a person who plans everything ahead of time, but you’ll always find me packing my case on the way out the door.

  2. Details on last night’s meal please! I haven’t been to Grammercy Tavern so many years. Was it as good as I remember?

  3. Go to shake shack. The ‘shroom burger is ah-mazing. I thought it would be veggie-burger-ish but it is stuffed with cheese and deep fried. Delicious all day long. Also, the fries are better than they look. No Gramercy Tavern, but tasty nonetheless.

  4. congrats again on the run! i have been trying to get back on running and need to sign up for one ASAP..and i dont know who packs a month in advance smh..

  5. Joanne, first off, CONGRATS!! and wow, this is your third year running it?! wow!!! I love that you and the.boy ran it together . . so special! I’ve met you and Erin so I can only imagine how awesome that dinner was. . packing 4 weeks in advance? I might go shopping 4 weeks in advance but I’m a last minute packer . . probably not a good idea but I’ve always been like this. countdown to HONEYMOON!!! so excited for you!!!

  6. Sues says:

Haha I pack for trips like 8 hours in advance. Now that we have Shake Shacks in Boston, I’m obsessed, but I’d LOVE to go to Gramercy Tavern!

  7. congrats on the race! and yes, who packs a month in advance?! i’m lucky if it’s a DAY in advance. ha. 🙂

  8. Heather says:

I am seriously impressed by anyone who can do a marathon of any length. I get tired just thinking about it. I have been avoiding Mad Men spoilers for weeks and weeks since I won’t get to watch it until it’s released on Netflix or DVD. It’s KILLING me!!

  9. Every time I do a round of Insanity, I say “that’s it!”….but then do it again. However, I never have that glow. Just signs of death. You two are awesome!

  10. Zainab says:

Yay!!! Congrats on the marathon you two! And yes..there is a glow 🙂 I have yet to catch up with Mad Men..still one season behind but will work on that. Also…who packs that early? I’m lucky if I get it done the night before instead of the morning off. Overachievers!! So jealous you met Erin!!!

  11. YES! Congrats on finishing the race (in the humidity no less)! Oh my gosh, what a gorgeous cake! Maybe I’ll be able to make one like that one day… My Mad Men feels—I completely agree with you, I wish there was a bit more closure for Don too, but I suppose it would be difficult for the writers to figure out what that closure looks like without making the story too contrived. And hooray for blogger meetups!!

  12. Congrats on the marathon and yes, that is a glow, not sweat that makes you two look so happy. Maybe after the honeymoon The.Boy should be renamed The.Husband….but that takes longer to type. 🙂

I would love to eat lunch with you…anywhere.

Probably the only thing I may pack a month in advance are the TSA approved sized toiletries. But that’s just me.

  13. ooooh it sounds like we’ll be honeymooning around the same time!!

also–I’m so mad I never got to try Gramercy Tavern! stupid Kayle!

  14. Oh WOW – Congrats on hanging in there – y’all are inspiring indeed! And I knew I shouldn’t have clicked on that link – but I did it – and now I WANT a slice! Those flowers! MMM!!!!

  15. Kim says:

Wow! I ran 2 miles this morning and THAT felt like an accomplishment…so thanks for bursting that bubble…haha, just kidding. That’s awesome that you and the hubby ran it together.

  16. Congrats on your half marathon! I’m more of a 5k person (not as hardcore as you, oops!). And no omg, people should NOT pack a month before. Like, what would you wear till the honeymoon then? How many clothes do these month-before-packers even own?

  17. Monica says:

Congrats on another marathon! I think it’s fair to say that…you rock! Simple as that. And your dinner at Gramercy Tavern sounds wonderful (good food and good company is the best thing). We went a long time ago and it was very memorable. I don’t know why we haven’t been back!

  18. OMG Honeymoon… girl you EARNED THIS!!! Also, I need to also go to Grammercy! AMAZING!!!

  19. That’s so cool that you got to meet one of your blogging friends, Joanne! That’s still on my to-do list, but not so easy when most of them live in other countries! Still, one day …
You must be pretty excited about your wedding now! (and yes, the honeymoon) My mum starts packing a llooong time before she goes on vacation. Me … hmmm, how about the night before? 😉

  20. Katie says:

Well done! I am still staggering towards my first 5k so I can only look on in awe!! xx

  21. Kate says:

Dude, I’VE been to Gramercy Tavern. And I live in CA!

  22. Reeni says:

Congrats on the race! I knew you’d rock it! I can’t even WALK when it’s humid. I’m one of those crazy list makers – I wouldn’t be packing yet but I’d be planning.

  23. Pam says:

Congrats, Joanne! Here’s to the honeymoon countdown!

  24. Hotly Spiced says:

Nobody in this house packs a month before. They start packing when they already should have left for the airport. I don’t recommend it. Congrats on completing another half-marathon! Great effort to come in under the two hour mark! I’m very behind with Mad Men – must download and start watching xx

  25. Kelly says:

Yay, congrats on the half marathon! You and the boy did an amazing job! I am totally a last minute packer. So fun that you got to meet Erin too 🙂

  26. Haha, no, I don’t think packing a month ahead is a thing… But then again, I usually pack the night before, so I’m probably not a good person to ask

  27. Johanna GGG says:

congrats on the half marathon – you need to just feel good about that achievement before you start packing (I only ever do it the night before but I do start writing a list of stuff earlier)

  28. As a child I liked to pack a month in advance for the trips we made from Australia to England, although back then, my mother had to re-do everything anyway 😛 These days? The day before counts as organised!

I think it’s definitely a glow in your post-run photo and congratulations on the <2hr times!
