summer cheese

1. Cheese as a food group and/or way of life. I’m into it.

2. But really, any summer party table that doesn’t feature at least three kinds for impulse snacking….sad.

3. This week in my CSA: CINNAMON BASIL. Is it socially acceptable for me to rub some on my wrists every day as perfume?! And why has no one created a candle of this yet!! I would buy twenty.

4. Okay, who are we kidding. Thirty-five.

5. Am I the only adult who can never seem to find matching socks? Contrary to popular belief, I really try, but every time I buy new ones, at least half disappear within the first month of owning them. I suspect that sock gremlins are eating them while I sleep.

6. This would really be far less of a problem if it were cool enough to wear long pants every day so no one would be all up in my sock situation. Just saying.

7. This cake. It’s everything.

8. Coffee after 2pm, yay or nay? I’ve developed this bad habit of feeling like I NEED it after lunch. Some days it keeps me up until all hours of the night and sometimes I’m out like a rock no matter what I do.

9. I’m sure thesis writing is not helping any of the above.

10. Book recommendations!!! I need them from you again. Annnnnddd GO!

  1. CINNAMON BASIL?! oh my gawd, I love that. . and matching socks is like the bane of my existence. You can’t match your own socks? Try yours + 3 other people. I hate that part about folding laundry. and yes, that cake. So freaking beautiful!

  2. annie says:

Oh cheese is definitely a food group.

    Books!
I just finished Ron Rash’s Serena and it was the best book I’ve read all year. The movie is on netflix, but the movie is truly one of those did-they-even-bother-to-read-it affairs. Why do people do that?

Right now I’m reading Uprooted by Naomi Novik. I love it, it’s a very girl-power book, even though sometimes the plot slows down just when you least want it to. Another favorite so far this year.

  3. That cake would be the end of me. Seriously.
I’m currently reading Shantaram, a 2003 novel by Gregory David Roberts. It’s awesome. 🙂

  4. I saw that cake on Instagram the other night and basically screamed at Josh until he’d look at it and promise to make it for me (haaaa, like that’s going to happen). It looks sooooo perfect.

  5. Cinnamon basil? I have never heard of that before, but it sounds amazing. That top photo has made me hungry now.

  6. Cinnamon basil is seriously my favorite herb on the planet! I wasn’t able to find it to put in my garden this year though, so booooo.
Regarding coffee after 2pm, I say GO FOR IT, girl! That’s ended up happening here at least twice so far this week. 😉

  7. Book rec! The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball. Great read about a farm in upstate NY near where my family is from. I think you’ll love it!
And cinnamon basil? Ummm, yes to that perfume idea!

  8. Christian says:

Uh cinnamon basil? I have never heard of such and quite frankly I’m hurt. I took have lost many a sock to the wash. I’m pretty sure all my missing sock are sitting in someone’s apartment in my complex. I have someone’s orange sock right now. (Sorry!)
As for book suggestions, I got hundreds of them! (Literally 200, so if you would like the whole list let me know.) 🙂 Recent good ones include:
Amazing Grace : William Wilberforce and the heroic campaign to end slavery by Eric Metaxas
    The Savages by Matt Whyman
Cinder: The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown
Where’d you go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
    Arranged by Catherine McKenzie
Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn

  9. Christian says:

OH and also Cheese is most definitely a food group! The best food group ever!!!

  10. Heather says:

Cinnamon Basil sounds downright magical. Have you read The Martian? I haven’t finished it yet, but I like it so far.

  11. Meg says:

Caffeine has, like, no effect on me these days. I’d blame it on the infant, and he may be partially at fault, but I think I’ve just become immune to it — except in mass quantities? So coffee after 2 p.m. would be not only zero problem for me, but something of a necessity. I don’t think a freight train could keep me awake these days! 🙂

  12. Rachel says:

I’m currently reading the Outlander series and am on book 4. It’s a great series but a major commitment! Each book is like 700 pages, but it’s such a great story and it’s now a TV show (also amazing) on Starz!
Also cinnamon basil…what the what?! never heard of it but sounds incredible!

  13. matching socks..pshhh i always wear scrubs to work and have mismatched socks. its overrated 😛

i have got to try cinnamon basil..right now i want to bathe in rose water.

  14. I soooo feel you on that cake- it looks heavenly. And cinnamon basil? What? That sounds AMAZING. Book recs: Lost at Sea by Jon Ronson (a collection of short stories, non-fiction/investigative journalism, about people from different circumstances) and The Locust Effect by Gary Haugen (I’m reading it now, it’s a pretty serious book about how violence causes poverty in third world countries, but it’s so interesting and eye-opening!)

  15. Erin M. says:

I ALWAYS have coffee after lunch…it’s a necessity in my life. I look forward to it so much!

  16. Kathleen says:

WE ARE ALL COMPLETELY BESIDE OURSELVES (Karen Joy Fowler)

    Anything by Tana French

Just starting ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE (Anthony Doerr) He’s amazing.

  17. Eileen says:

I am super jealous of that cinnamon basil! What are you going to make with it? I bet it would make a great addition to a cocktail. Re coffee, I find that my caffeine (and acid) tolerance has shifted with age. Caffeine past 2 pm keeps me awake half the night! In conclusion, now I have a selection of decaf tea to drink at night. But then, I’m not working on a graduate thesis — I think that requires at least some caffeine to maintain sanity levels.

  18. Cathy says:

Ana of California is the best book I’ve read recently.

  19. Oh I am with you, Joanne! I too have a habit of drinking coffee after lunch! But thankfully, it doesn’t affect my sleeps yet! 😉 Matching socks is a tough job for me too! And that cake is so divine! 🙂

  20. MUST try this Cinnamon Basil! MUST!

  21. Christina says:

I’m a follower of your cheese way of life. AND I do NEED coffee after lunch. A true need…

  22. Cheese. ALWAYS. Maybe that should be our next cook-a-thon theme… cheeseapalooza?? ;). Also, are you on Goodreads?

  23. Louanne says:

    Definitely must always have cheese…
Books – not new, but a favorite, Susan Herrmann Loomis’ In a French Kitchen
Also, The Pines trilogy by Blake Crouch, and a quick, highly interesting read, The Deadly Dinner Party

  24. WTF THAT SMORES CUSTARD CAKE??! I NEED IT

  25. Cinnamon basil sounds awesome!!! I bet it smells even better than chocolate mint which I kinda do rub all over myself. Just being honest here. And I honestly don’t think there is such a thing as having matching socks. It’s like we are trying to force them to pair together, but they just want to run wild and free. Who are we really to stop that? Let’s make mismatching socks a trend. And also, it’s 7pm and I’ve got some coffee right next to me. I’m a bad, I know.

  26. Beth says:

My book recommendation is All The Light You Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr. I’m about 50 pages from the end, and I can barely put it down, even to visit my favourite blogs. It is that good.

  27. Reeni says:

CINNAMON basil? I didn’t know such a thing existed! I need it I need I need it! Good luck with your thesis writing! I don’t know how you keep up with everything you do awesome girl.

  28. Cinnamon basil sounds heavenly – I hope someone turns this into a candle soon. Also, coffee after 2PM is a nay for me. For some reason coffee gets me super awake, so when I drink it in the afternoon I stay up way into the wee hours of the morning. I have the mis-match sock problem too! My solution was to buy socks that all look the same hehe 🙂

  29. I had cinnamon basil growing in my herb garden this summer. I have my third cup of coffee for the day at 4pm. My afternoon treat 🙂

  30. Kelly says:

Cinnamon basil? Love that! Our socks are always disappearing too – the worst! Wow, I want that cake for breakfast!

  31. Cinnamon basil! I hadn’t heard of it but now need it. Ditto that cake! And yes, matching socks…there must be a sock world somewhere where all the lost socks go.

  32. I need cinnamon basil in my life asap! I don’t wear socks, so I don’t have problems with matching ones. I think being forced to wear them to school for years so I can’t wear them anymore.

  33. Kate says:

I can’t do coffee after 2pm, it keeps me up all night.

  34. I know what you mean about the matching socks. It happens to me all the time.

  35. Hotly Spiced says:

I’ve never heard of cinnamon basil! Next time you get some can you share a photo? We have normal basil, purple basil and Thai basil – Thai is my favourite as it’s so fragrant. I’ve heard of holy basil and that’s also used for Thai cooking. We have odd sock demons in our house too. Funny though, how they mostly bother the boys – the girls seem to be able to keep their socks in pairs xx

  36. P says:

Ahh sock struggles! I freak out if I can’t find a sock’s buddy after doing laundry, haha!
