green smoothies

1. Does it make me more or less basic to (a) post a photo of a not-green green smoothie…

2. …or (b) admit that I really like both green and not-green green smoothies? Either way, I’m okay with it.

3. Also, I’m sure this makes me INCREDIBLY old, but when did the word “basic” become a thing!? I feel like this happened overnight. Or while I was in med school. Or living under a rock. (Same thing.)

4. I really do want to talk about the smoothies, though. So, as I mentioned two weeks ago, I signed the.boy and I up for Green Blender. Basically it’s a smoothie delivery service. They deliver ingredients for 5 2-serving smoothies and the recipes for them straight to your door…and then you make them! Easy. We have spent the past week smoothie-ing every morning, and I have to say…we are really loving it. Now, that’s not to say we LOVED every Green Blender smoothie. The one shown above, for instance, was filled with raspberries, an orange, a red bell pepper, and flaxseed…and it was a little funky. I think that one was the turning point, though, because after that every one we made was on point. I think I’ve also gotten pretty good at adding in random fruit to make them a bit sweeter and more palatable to the less vegetable-minded member of my household. We are doing it again this week, and then after that I think we’ll try for every other week, just because it’s a little expensive. During the off weeks, we’ll still keep smoothie-ing, though! I’ll just remake some of the recipes we loved from the week before.

5. All of that to say…even if you don’t think you’ll like green smoothies…TRY THEM. I feel so good knowing that I’m getting so many nutrients into my body at a time and if you add enough fruit, they really taste pretty super. Follow me on Instagram if you’re interested in keeping up with my smoothie adventures (and seeing what I’m throwing in my blender). Also, none of this was sponsored. Just part of my real life!

6. What is with all of the celebrity couple break-ups lately?! Will and Jada really just broke my heart.

7. This ice cream HAS TO HAPPEN. And this one. And this one.

8. Is anyone else SO excited to listen to Donald Trump at the debate on Thursday? No matter your political affiliation, I think we can all agree that this will be hysterical.

9. CSA goodies this week! There were so many. Including: purple peppers, white cucumbers, swiss chard, and MORE EGGPLANT. I’ve already thrown the peppers into a veggie ragout, but I need some help with the cukes. Thoughts?

  1. I think the whole “basic” thing has skipped the UK, as I haven’t heard of it. Although, we do seem to be about 10 years behind everyone else with some things.

  2. I just took that Buzzfeed Twitter quiz that guesses your age based on how much slang you know, and I got early twenties. HAHAHAHAHAHA. I think that comes from hanging around my early twenties daughter and her friends – she is bae. (See what I did there?) Meantime, saving those ice cream recipes for when I am post-Whole-30! xx

  3. Sues says:

Red bell pepper in a smoothie sounds reallyyy interesting. I work with lots of young 20-somethings, so they definitely keep me well-educated on the hip slang. But I don’t think you’re basic at all 🙂

  4. Whoaaa…that definitely sounds like a smoothie service I could wrap my brain around! So FUN! haha. 🙂 And YES, all the celebrity break ups are totally breaking my heart! Blake and Miranda were my FAVORITE!

  5. WHAT?!!!! Will and Jada? I had no idea. . damn, gonna have to catch up on my celeb gossip now. . and yes to all the smoothies! Love that you are loving Green Blender! that is seriously a fab business idea!

  6. Meg says:

I am a little too entertained by the idea of Trump as president, I must admit. Not necessarily excited for all the political mud-slinging to begin anew, but definitely looking forward to following that! 🙂

  7. You go ahead and post your green and non-green smoothie photos. And we’ll still love you, even if you use the word “basic”.
I’m posting a freaking phenomenal (if I do say so myself) recipe and video for a strawberry-cucumber-basil-lime-pepita yogurt bowl tomorrow. I think that’s where you should put your cucumbers. Ooo that sounded a little dirty.

  8. Kelster says:

Will and Jada have both denied this latest divorce rumour.
“Will wrote: ‘Under normal circumstances, I don’t usually respond to foolishness. (Because it’s contagious) But, so many people have extended me their “deepest condolences” that I figured – “What the hell… I can be foolish, too!”

‘So, in the interest of redundant, repetitious, over & over-again-ness… Jada and I are…NOT GETTING A DIVORCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

‘I promise you all – if I ever decide to divorce my Queen – I SWEAR I’ll tell you myself!”?#?Dumb? People Should Have to Wear Scarlet D’s,’ the actor concluded.”

  9. I love green smoothies, but I’ve never tried a smoothie with bell pepper. My current CSA challenge is eggplant. I seem to be running out of ideas for them. Still loving cukes though. How about tzatziki?

  10. Heather says:

Maybe we’ll give that smoothie service a try – I’d love to get some fresh ideas as to what to use to mix it up. I have never heard of using bell pepper in a smoothie, though,it definitely sounds… interesting? Ha ha.

  11. Crista says:

White cucumber?? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one.
Can you pair them with some radishes, sea salt, and vinegar for a light snack or side dish?

I just googled white cakes – I NEED!!! They look so cool!

  12. Bell pepper in a smoothie… not so good then? Does it make me basic that my green smoothies are always more grey? I thought that Will and Jada WEREN’T breaking up, was I misinformed? V. sad about Gwen & Gavin though ;'(

  13. Susan says:

Your CSA basket sounds amazing!I just saw a great idea for sweet pickle relish made with fresh cukes.

  14. Beth says:

Blueberry crisp ice cream? I am so in!
And even as someone with no vote at stake, I can’t wait to see Donald Trump in the debate.

  15. I am obviously even older because I didn’t know basic *was* a word now (other than in the original, occasional use kind of way)!

  16. The cucumbers I got in my CSA were SO good… I ate most of them straight but did some big Greek style salads too.

I think we are due to eat ice cream together again soon!

  17. i like to eat cukes straight up or throw them in salad.

  18. Christine says:

I love cukes sliced on the single blade side of my box grater with super thin red onions, oil, vinegar and spices! The mixture gets better and better as it sits. Hadn’t heard of the new use for the word basic. Those ice creams, yum!

  19. Kate says:

    cucumber soup! (or smoothies ;-))

  20. Reeni says:

Too funny – I just used the word basic in my next post. The smoothies have been such a good thing for me! Thanks so much. I’m back into the routine and decided to just buy the stuff myself – especially because of all the great produce right now. I wasn’t happy with the quality of my fruits. . . for the price I could buy all organic. It might be an occasional thing when I haven’t had a chance to shop.

  21. Kelly says:

I am a fan of all green smoothies – so glad Green Bender is working out for you guys 🙂 So sad about all the break-ups lately too 🙁 Yes to all those ice creams – blueberry crisp? Must make!

  22. That smoothie service sounds awesome!!! I really want to try it out!

  23. I only really heard about the term “basic” last year. And it was mostly in the “basic bitch” form. It even has a Wiki article about it:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_bitch
Also, that smoothie service thing sounds like so much fun! I haven’t had a smoothie in ages. This. Must. CHANGE!

  24. Purple peppers! Got to find some of those 🙂
