watermelon snack attack

1. Watermelon: salted v. not. What is your stance on this?!? I used to be pretty sure I was a not salted, but now I’m not so sure. The salt definitely adds a little summin’ summin’.

2. Also, I am SO calling in and asking this at the next presidential debate. Someone has to get down to the real issues.

3. So….you know I’m obsessed with this Green Blender smoothie service right?! Well, Jenna, the founder of Green Blender, saw that I was FREAKING OUT over my love for Green Blender on Instagram and offered to give 20% off to all my readers on their first Green Blender box from now until the end of September!! Just type in the discount code JOANNEEATSWELL when you’re checking out.

4. BTW I am totally adding watermelon to my smoothie tomorrow. It is either going to be totally weird or totally awesome. I’ll keep you posted.

5. You guys, I did the most despicable thing last week. I BOUGHT A WINTER SQUASH!! And I felt terrible about it. In my defense, it’s for freelance work so it’s not like I exactly had a choice. But still…I’m just not ready!!

6. To make up for it, I also bought thirty gazillion pounds of tomatoes and basil. And then re-infested our apartment with fruit flies. So there’s that.

7. This cake. It really is the ultimate….so who is making it for me for my birthday (in February)?!?

8. You know what I really hate? WordPress updates. Those of you who aren’t bloggers won’t care about this or know what I’m talking about, but those who are…you feel me, right? They’re so stressful! You don’t update and you end up with all sorts of security risks…you do update and your whole blog might implode because of some incompatibility. These are the things that keep me up at night.

9. Pass the bourbon.

    That is one sensational cake.
For the record, I bought a winter squash this week too. And I didn’t even have the excuse of freelance work.

  2. I love watermelon in smoothies. Especially if you freeze it first — then you can make like a watermelon slushy, mmm.

  3. Nicola says:

I want to try the green smoothie thing BUT don’t see how I could get through all of it and my CSA. I already feel like I’m swimming in vegetables. How do you do it?!

  4. 1. Salt on watermelons – not sure. Feta cheese mixed with chunks of watermelon? Oh yes. I know, it makes no sense.
    2. I hear ya on the WordPress update. May the force be with us.

  5. Sues says:

Watermelon in smoothies is delicious!! But the question is… Will you add salt??

  6. My grandma pretty much SWEARS by salted watermelon, but I’m not so sure—it sounds kinda iffy to me, but I should probably try it! And YES, I so hear you on winter squash! I’m not ready yet either, but just the other day I noticed that the acorn squash from my garden were ready to pick! Say whaaa??

  7. Erica says:

Oh my god that cake looks beautiful, like a cloud!! And good call with the tomato and basil, I want bruschetta for dinner now! You’ve inspired me. Hope you’re doing well friend!!

  8. I have never heard of any putting salt on fruit except for my aunt and cousins! I used to babysit my cousins and they’d put salt on their watermelon and apples and I thought it was so weird lol. Good to know they’re not alone 😛

  9. Heather says:

I have never heard of salt on watermelons… it sounds intriguing, though.

That cake is amazing! Plus, black plum jam? YUM!

  10. Christina says:

I hate to admit this, but I’ve never tried to salt my watermelon…. maybe this weekend.. And yes to ALL of the tomatoes!

  11. I think the salt makes watermelon taste even sweeter. 🙂

We are totally twinsies – I bought a butternut last week for recipe development purposes! (There were only like two at Wegmans and I snagged one.) It definitely feels too soon though!

And that is the coolest cake ever!

  12. I have never heard of salted watermelon! I like watermelon in smoothies though – I hope you do too 🙂

  13. Meg says:

I use WordPress.com, but my dad has WordPress.org — and I maintain his sites for him. Yes, the updates are super stressful! Worse, I have all sorts of customization on his theme, so I wind up having to redo that every time we update. Blergh. Such a pain!

  14. I say yes to salt on watermelon! On green apples, too! Have you tried it? And that cake? Also a yes!

  15. I always update out of fear and then I’m like… alright, let’s clean this up and figure out how to work everything alll over again. And salted watermelon? Is that a thing? Huh. Gotta try it. (Also that cake… damn)

  16. Lynn says:

No to the salt on watermelon. That’s pretty standard in the south – adding salt – but I rebelled against that early on. (I don’t like salt on a margarita glass either though.)

    That PB&J cake looks divine!

  17. Eva R. says:

How have I not tried salted watermelon yet?? I’m an appetizer over desserts girl, so I definitely need to hop on that train ASAP.

Amen on the wordpress updates. Akin to ipone updates, I close my eyes every time and pray it doesn’t all explode. OH and that almond butter buttercream: HEAVEN.

  18. I still haven’t tried salting watermelon!! I’m adding that to my to-do list.

I feel you on the winter squash! I saw on my stats page that my pumpkin recipes are starting to get more hits, and I’m like, no, it’s too soon!! But then there’s also a part of me that really wants a pumpkin muffin…

  19. Reeni says:

I almost bought a winter squash too! There were piles of them at my market but they were kind of on the pricey side. I can’t believe it’s almost September already!! Watermelon smoothies are the bomb.

  20. Kelly says:

My mom and husband always put salt on their watermelon and green apples too. Oh yum, love that cake!

  21. Krista says:

Pass the bourbon is right!!! The updates make me a bundle of nerves too. 🙂

  22. I will have to try salt on my watermelon when they are in season. Hope the update went smoothly 🙂

  23. #8. I am with you! YES. The frantic check if the new wordpress will be compatible with plugins before clicking that update button and hope it all doesn’t disappear. I’ve def. been burned by buggy things happening to the site after updates, so I’m always very anxious about them.

#7. Also that cake is amazing. If I lived in NYC I’d make it for you for your B-day!

  24. I’m just making friends with the fruit flies at this point. I don’t have tons of friends so I’m really okay with it.

  25. I can’t think about anything but that cake now. omg.

  26. Kate says:

I vote unsalted watermelon with feta!

  27. P says:

Gah fruitflies! They are popping up in my place too, and I don’t even have fruit out! 😛

  28. Johanna GGG says:

I hear your pain with wordpress updates – I feel the same way – blooming technology is so demanding – I am unsure about salting watermelon but love it in a smoothie
