Chocolate Chip and Potato Chip Cookies

A lot of people think summer eating is not about turning on your oven…but these cookies have me begging to differ.

Big time.

Chocolate Chip and Potato Chip Cookies

Not that chocolate chip cookies should be restricted to one season by any means. I tend to think of them more as any time every time ALL THE TIME food.

However, summer sunshine has me wanting to be out of the house and socializing more, and anytime I get together with my friends and family, you know I’m going to be bringing some treats.

It’s really just not a party until the chocolate chip cookies get there (<– FACT), so it should come as no surprise that these chocolate chip and potato chip cookies are what I plan on toting around with me ALL SUMMER LONG.

And here’s why:

The dough comes together within minutes and can be mixed old school style!!

With a mixing bowl. And a wooden spoon. And good old-fashioned muscle power.

No frills, no overnight chill time, no stress.

Just cookies. In your face. In twenty minutes (or less!).

Chocolate Chip and Potato Chip Cookies

Ever the diehard fan of all things sweet and salty, I have to say that these are the ULTIMATE when it comes to that ever-loving flavor combination. Filled with larger than life semisweet chocolate chips intermingling with crispy crunchy salty Lay’s Potato Chip bites, these cookies (which are as big as your face, by the way) are BEYOND in terms of deliciousness.

Chocolate Chip and Potato Chip Cookies

It’s official: I love them.

And I suspect you will, too.

Sweet and salty come together as a dynamic duo in these irresistible chocolate chip and potato chip cookies!
Yield: 12 cookies
Ingredients
  • ½ lb butter, melted and still warm
  • ¾ cup packed dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1¾ cups flour
  • 2 tbsp malted milk powder
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • 1 (12 oz) bag semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 (2¾ oz) bag Lays Potato Chips, lightly crushed
Instructions
  1. Heat oven to 375F.
  2. In a large bowl, stir together the butter, brown sugar, and regular sugar with a wooden spoon until well combined, about 1 minute. Add in the egg and vanilla, and stir until well combined, about 1 minute. Stir in the flour, milk powder, salt, baking powder, and baking soda, mixing until just combined. Mix in the chocolate chips and Lays Potato Chips, stirring until evenly distributed.
  3. Using a ⅓ cup measure, scoop the dough onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, leaving about 2-3 inches between cookies. I was able to fit about 6 cookies on a regular cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool completely on the pan before eating.

I mean, I’ve seen recipes that include them and I’m always like, “That sounds amazing and I love baked goods with lots of salt in them!” so, really, it’s a shame I haven’t gotten around to making them. Bookmarking this baby so I don’t forget!

  21. Hi Joanne! I’ve not been here for awhile and look what I’ve been missing. My gosh, I must make these soon. Love the sweet/salty thing. And I remember placing potato chips on top of a candy bar to get that fix. 🙂

  22. W Cronin says:

These cookies were a total FAIL !!
First of all, after mixing the ingredients together,I could not get over the smell !
The aroma forced me to eat half the batter….,just so I could get the cookies on to the baking sheet !
And the yield is way off, since I only got 7 cookies !
After I finished eating the first 5 cookies,my kids got the other two.
I will never make these again ……they are too dangerous and not for the weak of heart.
    .
(PS.The aroma was that good, and I’m still alive after eating most of the raw batter !)

  23. Johanna GGG says:

those cookies look huge and so so good – but enough chocolate when I am still in after work winding down because it is just so tempting and if I could reach into the screen I would be stuffing my face

  24. Steph says:

Made these tonight and they are crazy good!!!

  25. Jennifer says:

Can you leave out the malted milk powder?

  26. Judy says:

    Hi Joanne,
Thank you for posting this recipe – I plan to try it this upcoming weekend. Would like to know what brand of Chocolate Chips you are using in this recipe? They look to be a very different shape than the Nestles Toll House semi sweet chips that I typically buy. Also, these cookies look as if they come out of the oven more flat & crispy as opposed to the thick, soft type. So I suspect the chips you’re using here are probably just the right type for this recipe. Please advise ; ) Thank you!

  27. Kim P. says:

These are great! Tastes like a treat from a fancy bakery. I’m glad I doubled the recipe so I can share a few…lol. I’m not sure about the malted milk; I thought it was chocolate malt when I made my grocery list so I used ovaltine…turned out fab anyway. Thanks for sharing.

  28. Kk says:

I made these today, and they were a hit with the entire family! Super easy to make, as stated, and delicious. Thanks for the recipe.

  29. Theresa says:

Can you use light brown sugar instead of dark?

  30. Lauren says:

Hi, can I make these smaller and if so what would be the baking time adjustment?
    Thanks

  31. Lauren says:

Hi, just wanted to thank you for your email telling me I can make these smaller. I used a tbs cookie scoop and baked them for 10 mins.. They weren’t as flat as I like them prob bc I subbed out the malt powder for buttermilk powder bc I had it on hand. So I did what I always do which is after the cookies come out of the oven, I bang the pans on the counter a few times to flatten.
These were absolutely delicious. They are a keeper for sure.
