concretes

1. My new favorite way to celebrate three day weekends? Concretes from Shake Shack. Mine was vanilla custard mixed with an entire slice of pie. Can you imagine anything more glorious?

2. I also plan on scientifically examining whether they are just as fabulous for celebrating random Wednesday afternoons. I suspect: YES.

3. I sent what (I hope) is the final version of my thesis to my boss yesterday(!!!!)…so this week is all about working on the presentation. EEK.

4. Equally as important is deciding what to bake to bribe my examining committee/put them into a sugar coma so they won’t give me such a hard time during the questioning time. Thoughts? I feel like cinnamon rolls of some sort are a must.

5. You just can’t not love someone who makes you cinnamon rolls. Fact.

6. So, can someone please explain what I’m not allowed to wear/eat/drink now that Labor Day has passed? Because, not for nothing, but yesterday was totally one of the hottest days of the year…and I rocked some 3/4 pants and didn’t even feel guilty about it.

7. Mostly I still just felt really sweaty. WHY, NYC. WHY?!

8. Have you guys read anything by Liane Moriarty? I read Big Little Lies earlier this year (LOVED IT) and pretty much speed read through What Alice Forgot this weekend. OBSESSED. I now plan on reading everything she has ever written. Possibly at record speed.

9. On that note, hit me with your book suggestions!

Yay for the thesis! And yesterday was the hottest day in Toronto this year, too. Go figure.

  2. Vanilla custard and pie – sounds like the best thing ever!

  3. YM says:

Love cinnamon buns but when made properly sticky. I recommend scones.

    Good luck!

  4. Congrats on getting the thesis in, and good luck working on that presentation!
    Yes to cinnamon buns.
And I can’t remember if I gave you this book rec before or if I commented on someone else’s blog… but The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball!

  5. I cannot imagine anything more glorious! Out of curiosity, what flavor of pie? (Any flavor would be yum!) And totally yes to the cinnamon rolls…you’ll be amazing, girl!

  6. Those concretes sound amazing! Can’t believe I had never heard of them. You’ll do great with your thesis presentation no matter what treats you choose, I’m sure, but cinnamon rolls can never hurt!!

I don’t read anything but cookbooks and kids’ books these days, but I can tell you this: I wear white all year and capris whenever it’s warm enough :). I think Labor Day restrictions have become super optional!

  7. I missed my chance to go to Shake Shack while in Vegas recently. totally bummed. Congrats on finishing the final version of your thesis!!! more concretes!!! and yes to cinnamon rolls . . or something with a heavy bourbon frosting. you can do it. 🙂

  8. Shannon says:

  9. Meg says:

Yay for submitting your thesis — so exciting! I’ve never been to Shake Shack, and I know I’m majorly missing out. My reading has taken a nose-dive with the little one lately, but my favorite recent read was Marisa de los Santos’ The Precious One. Liane Moriarty is awesome — I love her! And Jojo Moyes has a sequel to Me After You coming out later this month. If you haven’t read her original, do not miss it!

  10. Laura says:

Being a food writer I am SURE you have read Ruth Reichl-she has a new(ish) fiction work called “Delicious”-so good. Additionally I LOVED My Berlin Kitchen by Luis Weiss. And yes the trend is that I love food centered books!

  11. final version of your thesis?!?! woohooo!

  12. cheri says:

Still reeling from the vanilla custard pie, wow!

  13. Ice cream or shakes on a three day weekend is the best thing anyone could ever do for themselves. So Joanne girl, I completely agree with you :). I actually had me a bowl of ice cream last weekend that made me hum girl lol.

  14. It is cool here and we have no Shake Shack. What’s a girl to do? I just read Rosemary’s Baby for the first time. It was fascinating and perfect for the Halloween season. Plus it is a quick read.

  15. Christina says:

Augh I happen to live where there is no Shake Shack. I will live through you….

  16. “You just can’t not love someone who makes you cinnamon rolls. Fact.” Also, pie! It’s supposed to be 108 degrees tomorrow. Yay Fall! Oh wait….

  17. Heather says:

Hooray for submitting your thesis! Just think, the whole process is almost over! I actually just started reading Liane Moriarty and now have just about all of her books on my list. I started with The Husband’s Secret and I really like her writing style.

I totally don’t follow the rules of fashion. Especially when the weather seems to be the same year round here!

  21. Rachel says:

this heat is NOT OK. I too am still wearing my summer dresses and have arrived to work sweated through my clothes yesterday and today. I was mourning the end of summer, but now I’m just OVER IT! Bring on the flannel and boots!

  22. Christian says:

I’ve read The Husband’s Secret and What Alice Forgot. Both very awesome. Give Wife 22 by Melanie Gideon a try.

  23. Christine says:

I’d complain about LA’s heat, but you’ve got me beat! Yay on the thesis!! You’ll do great! I vote for cinnamon rolls, love how the taste lingers. Book recs? Isabel Allende 🙂

  24. Marci says:

Congrats on getting your thesis finished. And how nice to have some hot weather at this end of the season. I’m glad you’re loving Liane’s books – I’m an addict and have read all of her works – she’s such a talent! xx

  32. Johanna GGG says:

congratulations on getting your thesis to your boss – and I love anyone who makes me cinnamon scrolls – in fact I now want to judge your thesis just to eat cinnamon rolls. Highly recommend All the Bright Places by JEnnifer Niven – have now loaned it to 3 people and they all loved it as well as me

  33. I always feel so clueless dressing myself when it’s a billion degrees post-Labor day! So difficult.

And yes, cinnamon rolls will win over anyone though I have a feeling your thesis will speak for itself!

  34. Kelly says:

Yay, congrats on finishing the thesis and good luck on the presentation! A big yaaass to cinnamon rolls!

  35. MaryKay says:

    Congratulations on thesis!

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and then there are 7 more books and counting, plus TV series on Starz!

  36. I read The Husband’s Secret and it was great. I think it’s the only book that ever made me cry. I still think about it sometimes. If you want to check it out, shoot me an email with your address and I’ll send you my copy. I won’t read it again and it would be great to pass it on.
