So, adult food.

But with a delicious twist because even though we are officially the kind of people who do/pay our taxes FOR REAL (in a heartbreaking kind of way), almost by ourselves (but with some hardcore guidance from our significant others and a tax consultant).

We are still (and ever shall be) the type of people whose most listened to Spotify playlist is the Billboard Top 100.

John Legend on repeat.

Today is the beginning of the end.

The end of me even having a modicum of control over our primetime television watching (although, the fact that we have continued to watch Breaking Bad against my protestations is a testament to the fact that I never had much to begin with).

The end of any dinnertime conversation that doesn’t involve the phrases “home runs”, “strikeouts”, “RBIs”, “ERAs”, “Tommy John surgery”, “David Wright”, and “Matt Harvey”.

Which also, not surprisingly, correlates with the end of me not falling asleep mid-bite because, SHEER BOREDOM.

Today, my friends. Is Mets Opening Day.

Let’s play ball.

yellow birthday cake with fluffy chocolate ganache frosting

I think I made it safely out of The Birthday Zone.

You know, the three weeks spanning from the last week in February to the third week in March that contain my birthday, the.boy’s birthday, our anniversary, my sister’s birthday, the.boy’s grandmother’s birthday, and approximately thirty-five layer cakes.

All made by me.

It’s exhausting.

And it’s going to be an annual occurrence. Which means you will get to hear me complain about it every year, ever and anon!

Would it be totally irrational for me to start freezing cake layers now in preparation for next year?

Please say no.

This is our last chance meal.

Like, on The Biggest Loser, there are the last chance workouts where all the contestants starve themselves for 24 hours, take diuretics to pee out as much water weight as possible, and come close to cardiac arrest at the gym.

Except opposite because our “last chance” involves ricotta, mozzarella, pasta, and BUTTERNUT SQUASH.

All things that are very much not allowed on “last chance workout” days but very much encouraged on “last chance meal” days. Do you see the difference?

1. They say you can never go prom dress shopping again, but oh. You can. When your sister is almost a decade younger than you, you may just find yourself in Macy’s at dinnertime on a Sunday surrounded by dresses that are too short/tight/sparkly/bedazzled/revealing trying to decide whether a gray/silver or salmon pink high low dress goes better with the hair color she hopes to have by June.

2. Spoiler alert – we decided to go with the “buy both, return one later” method of decision-making. Otherwise known as the “procrastinate making important decisions” method. I’m such a good older sister influence.

3. The best part of going into the Macy’s in Herald Square (yes, the Thanksgiving Day parade Macy’s) on a weekend? The flower show. I’m a little flower obsessed at the moment in general and keep buying them for myself on a weekly basis. But that mannequin above takes it to a whole new level of love.

A favorite healthy Middle Eastern dip goes green in this lime-dressed kale tabbouleh with sour cherries!

I was always picked last in kickball.

I’m telling you this not to elicit some kind of sympathetic reaction, but as a point of comparison.

In my life, I have run four marathons (one at an 8 minute/mile pace), countless halfs, and have gone through more pairs of running shoes than my credit card cares to remember.

But I was also the “big boned”, plus-sized girl who was always picked last in kickball and didn’t do a single minute of exercise until I was a junior in college.

So it wasn’t some innate ability that I was born with, but a desire to achieve a goal and the work I did to attain it. And if I can do it, you can too.
