1. It’s good to be home!! Except for the fact that there is no Flour Bakery five blocks away to inhale breakfast at every morning. Somehow starting my dayย without twice baked brioche and a sticky sticky bun is just not going to be the same.

2. I do need to figure out how they make their steel cut oats so heavenly though. Mine just never seem to come out so creamy. How do they do it?!

3. On an unrelated note, I am chaining myself to a treadmill from now until the honeymoon…and declaring this #TheSummerofSALAD. Anyone else?

4. We got our first CSA delivery yesterday! And it is ALL GREENS. Bok choy, mizuna, red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, mustard greens, chinese cabbage, arugula, chives, and sage. So far I’ve mixed the mizuna and mustard greens into a baked pasta dish, but I definitely need some inspiration for all that lettuce.

6. Is anyone else doing a CSA this year? Would it be interesting to you guys to see a weekly CSA update on how I used all our veggies? Just something I would consider if there’s interest.

7. GROUNDBREAKING NEWS. The.Boy “sort of” made dinner for himself while I was gone!! By which I mean, he boiled water for pasta, cooked said pasta, and then tossed it with jarred sauce. Baby steps.

8. I’m thinking I should teach him how to make pizza dough next. Something tells me that will be gratifying for both of us.

9. I am SO behind on all things blogging, but especially blog reading. If I haven’t commented on your blog since last Thursday..I still love you!! I promise I’ll get back to my normally scheduled programming…and SOON.

  1. Yes to the weekly CSA update! We’re doing a CSA and it starts next week. I never know what to do with all the different greens at the beginning of the season!

    I like your wednesday talks! I am tempted on doing something similar myself ๐Ÿ™‚
    I definitely think you should teach ‘The Boy’ how to make pizza dough. Though I once taught a boyfriend of mine how to make scones – and that was the best thing I ever taught him haha! By doing so, after having baked said scones a couple of times for the pupil, someday, one might be surprised with a nice homemade breakfast in bed – and get to be the one who stays in bed while it is being prepared ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Maybe they soak their steel cut oats overnight before cooking (or at least for a few hours) to help make them extra creamy??

  4. hey girl! Hooray for your first CSA delivery!!! I love CSAs and wanted to find one here in WI, esp for the summer but since we have such a fantastic Farmer’s Market, I chose not to. I would love reading about what you do with your CSA produce! and hooray for the.boy!!!! that’s great! he could have easily picked something up instead!!

    Your trip to Boston sounds awesome! Flour is such a cozy, bright, and delicious place, isn’t it? You have me so interested in the steel cut oatmeal!! I want to try it…(I found that a method of cooking the oats for just 1 minute in boiling water than covering/chilling overnight before finishing in the morning gives you a very creamy texture). Can’t wait to see the amazing inspiration that will burst from you after your honeymoon in Italy! Such exciting stuff!

    Don’t you dare chain yourself to the treadmill. Dieting and overexercising is BORING. What is not boring, however, is Flour. You were that close? That sounds amazing.

  11. I’m doing a CSA but mine starts in November! That’s when we get the greens. I have a mini summer share going but that is ending soon. Just too hot down here for large scale, organic agriculture.

    My doctor has basically ordered me to have salads pretty much every day and cut down on gluten, so hooray for all of the greens! Unfortunately we slacked and didn’t sign up for a CSA this summer. Definitely something I need to look into, though, for next year.

    And yes to the boy’s baby steps, too. Pasta and store-bought sauce were the first meals I made for myself at university. (Plus, he probably appreciated you EVEN MORE when you got home, right?)

  16. i wish i had that breakfast everyday too! yum-o! though i have been enjoying overnight oats with quick steel cut oats (that i bought with a coupon & could never cook right stove-top–too gummy). perfect use for them!!

    I want to do a CSA so badly, but we are gone too much in the summer for it to work. I love that The.Boy made spaghetti – my husband will only do bean and cheese burritos. Silly boys.

    Hahha I still love you too!! So jealous you had Flour Bakery breakfast 5 days in a row. Love that place. Wait wasn’t last summer the summer of greens too? with the wedding? Lol! I will be interested in a weekly summary of how you are using your veggies. I am making a point to visit my farmers market every weekend this summer and would like some ideas beyond salad (and pie!)

    We have belonged to a CSA for several years. EVERY week, all summer and fall, we get at least 2 heads of wonderful lettuce. One can only eat so many salads in a week before 2 more heads of the same wonderful lettuce show up in our share.
    We discovered several delicious lettuce soup recipes all over the internet. It’s good hot, it’s yummy cold. Better yet, it freezes for those long cold months when supermarket greens are compost-ready and very costly.
    Google “lettuce soup” and see what you get.
    Also lettuce sautes nicely for asian stir-fry.

    I know what you mean about the oatmeal!! I can never get it as awesomely creamy (and I know it’s not just because of the cream). If you ever find out the secret, let me know – seriously ๐Ÿ˜› I love adding tons of greens to a quesadilla with beans or mashed chickpeas. Mmm, so good ๐Ÿ™‚

  30. My husband can do pasta, and baked potatoes, and top his own pizza when I make the dough (!). If you manage to teach yours how to do pizza dough, please tell us, and I’ll get him to up his game!

    All the greens!! ! We do indeed have a CSA box, and are always looking for new things to do with all the veg. I would be up for a CSA box series — although I don’t think you need to do it absolutely every week if you don’t want to! I guess it depends on how much of your cooking is CSA-box-based.

    Not long until the honeymoon to Italy. How exciting. Your husband’s efforts in the kitchen are very similar to what happens here with the young adults. Baby steps indeed. I wish we had the CSA business here as I’d definitely sign up. I’m sure we must have something similar xx

    Yay! Welcome back. ๐Ÿ™‚ Teaching boy Pizza dough will essentially triple your fun when coming up with crazy pizza recipes. I am still thinking about that time when I made a nachos and bolognese pizza (don’t judge me!) Love reading your Wednesday coffee talks. I am getting married in 6 months and whilst I cannot swear off sugar and butter just yet, I am going to take a leaf out of your CSA box and make a resolution to eat more greens (even without meat… ) and just aim to be a healthier me for like – forever. xx

    I stumbled over your blog recently, and I just wanted to say how much I love your recipes. I’m a postdoc in developmental bio, and my roommate is also an MD/PhD who’s going back to medical school next year — I really appreciate finding recipes that are great-tasting and full of fresh ingredients so I can make sure he doesn’t get scurvy.

    You need to cook up lettuce into soup with other greens – it is a great way to get through it when it is wilting. And then you will feel good about the brioches and sticky buns! And congrats to the boy for his cooking progress – am sure he will not be starving now he has discovered the packet of pasta and jar of sauce
