date night

1. This weekend, we date nighted with Ben, Jerry, and American Hustle. I refuse to admit to just how much of this we ate…but let’s just say it was NOT wedding diet-approved. I don’t think I’ve eaten this much B&J’s since college. Cinnamon Buns? MY LIFE. And the supermarket didn’t have that flavor otherwise we would have bought and eaten TWO pints. Thank god for small favors.

2. And there you have the entire story of how I gained the freshman 15. Fine, 20.

3. I just got called for JURY DUTY in March. I wasn’t super gung ho about it, as you might imagine. And then, my lawyer fiance LAUGHED when I told him which courthouse I have to go to and informed me that that was the “sucky one”. Way to be supportive, babe.

4. One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to be more organized so I’ve bought not one, but TWO life planners. This and this. Kind of obsessed. With both.

5. This whole 6 more weeks of winter makes me want mac ‘n’ cheese nonstop. Like big bowls of this, and this and this. Can’t stop won’t stop.

6. So I tried this new caramel flan latte business at Starbucks the other day and I just can’t taste the difference between that and a regular caramel latte. Yet everyone else seems to love it. I feel like I have defective tastebuds.

7. My Mr. Coffee 4-cup coffeemaker, that I have loved and cherished for FIVE YEARS, tried to electrocute me this weekend. Not an exaggeration. It was turned off, but was still making weird bubbling/gurgling sounds like it was on, and when I went to flip the switch on and then off again, I got shocked. We ordered a new (cheap) one off of Amazon almost immediately, but now I’m thinking I might want to add a fancy schmancy one to our registry. What should I get?? (And don’t say Keurig, because that thing does NOT make coffee strong enough for my taste.)

8. And no, I have not even started my registry yet which is absurd because it’s probably the only fun thing in this whole wedding planning thing. I mean, who cares about flowers and linens when a whole set of All Clad pans could be delivered to my door FOR FREE.

9. Β My wedding planning priorities are just all wrong. Registry-ing starts tomorrow. Bouquets be damned.

10. I have so many 1099s sitting on my desk. Don’t make me be an adult and figure out what to do with them. Just don’t.

  1. I don’t think that flavour of B&Js is available over here – shame, because it sounds awesome.

  2. I love to have Ben & Jerry’s every once in a while as a treat! I have jury duty next week! Hopefull it’s not too bad for both of us.

  3. gloria says:

aah always a wedding. is a mess and remember well but I don’t stressed so much (anyway years ago was all more simple) go day by day:)
hope your new coffe maker works well:)))

  4. Barbara says:

The single great thing about reaching the 70’s is: no more jury duty. I know, you can’t relate. πŸ™‚
    (I DID say single)

  5. debbie says:

I know what you mean about the Keurig. I have one and love the convenience of it but the coffee is not strong enough for me either. I use the little brew basket that you can also purchase and pack (really pack) the coffee in that and it’s better. I was a cafe mocha girl for years and years (Note my blog’s name!) and now I’m hooked on Caramel Latte’s….have to try the new one. They are just so expensive when you add the extra for soy milk. Whew!!! But damn they are good!!!!

  6. Simply Life says:

oooh- I’m excited to hear about what fun kitchen things (and other household stuff!) you put on your registry!!!

  7. My future mother in law gave me a huge scolding a few months ago because I hadn’t started my registry. I was all “well, they are coming to the wedding, and they have to travel, isn’t that enough?” And then I got another scolding.
Well, I’m glad she got me on it because we ended up getting some of the things for Christmas/Engagement gifts and now my kitchen is a lot happier. Hurray for stuff!
Speaking of wedding priorities, I should probably schedule my fitting soon.

  8. Monica says:

This winter is wearing me down! Need mac & cheese and Ben & Jerry’s! πŸ™‚ I love a good planner, too – love making lists and checking things off with my pen.

  9. I’m legitimately a little jealous of your jury duty! I think it’d be fun, actually. I’m not registered to vote though, so I’m not in the pool of people they pull from here.

You should just get a french press! They’re a little more effort than just turning it on and walking away, but they make the best coffee ever. It doesn’t make any sense, but somehow the coffee even feels nicer in your mouth.

  10. 1. Yuuuum Ben & Jerry’s!
    2. UGH Jury dutyyy! Michael got called but luckily didn’t get put on a jury. He still missed a day of work. Blech.
    3. I AM OVER THIS WINTER. OVERIT.
    4. Girrrl you totally need to get a’registerin! I cannot waaaaait!

  11. Teffy says:

I have never seen such ben & jerry flavour here in the UK, but I definitely need this in my life. It has ALL the ingredients necessary for a happy night in (despite the anti-wedding-diet aspects of it)!

    {Teffy’s Perks} X

  12. Ah get a Nespresso – I got one for Matt and am now completely obsessed. And I completely agree with you about the Kuerig!

I have lots of advice for registering if you are interested…. like register at Macy’s because if you open up their credit card you get 8 million points and credits when people shop FOR you. Do it!

  13. Ugh, more winter! I keep thinking Spring is just around the corner, then we get hit with another snow or ice storm like today. Stay cozy with mac n’ cheese and your Ben & Jerry’s πŸ˜‰

  14. I am with you on the mac n cheese front! It’s been appearing on our meal plan at least once a week lately…hmmmm. πŸ™‚
As for the coffee maker, we received one for our wedding that we actually did NOT register for (and would not have spent that much on it ourselves!), but turns out we love it! Makes excellent coffee. Technivorm Moccamaster Manual Drip Stop coffee maker. It’s at Williams-Sonoma and Sur La Table (and maybe other places).

  15. I like this coffee talk thing on Wednesday, its really nice! Anyway, as a friend, I highly recommend to get the Cuisinart coffee maker( black and stainless steel one- with a clock that makes coffee before you wake up) – it makes coffee perfect every time!

  16. Ooh, yes – start bulking up your dream kitchen with that registry, girl! Thanks for the mac n’ cheese links – now I know what to do with my last avocado….

  17. Have fun with Jury Duty! If I could recommend anything- I would recommend bringing a good book to read while you wait. oh and money for a coffee in the jury cafΓ© πŸ˜‰ It really isn’t as bad as it seems!

  18. Two thoughts: I need to get that ice cream in my life, STAT. And two, seeeeeeriously with all the 1099s. Every time I stare at the pile of tax stuff on my desk and even think about organizing it, I give up and have a cookie. My accountant and my waistline will be none too happy.

  19. Louanne says:

Thanks for the morning laugh! About the Keurig, I also thought strong coffee was lost, but I promise you, Black Tiger, Dark Magic, and Jet Fuel are strong!

  20. danielle says:

Im with you – no Keurig here! I love our coffee pot! A Cuisinart that grinds the coffee right before brewing. It has a stainless steel carafe so the coffee is always hot.

  21. OMG. You know, I’ve been wallowing in self-pity, bad work juju, illness, and lack of sleep.

    Congratulations on your engagement!

My hubby got called for Jury duty RIGHT before Christmas. Got picked, too, right when he had two huge deadlines. No fun.

  22. Sues says:

Love this post! I feel you on the ice cream πŸ™‚ I LOVE my Cuisinart Grind and Brew and am pretty much obsessed with the All-Clad pans I got for my wedding. Yes, registries are fun πŸ™‚ But so is wedding food! And music! And vows πŸ™‚

  23. Am laughing at your registry comment. It’s made out to be alllll fun and scanner gun shenanigans, until they hand you the list of things you NEED OR YOU ARE A BAD WIFE. Like two gravy boats: a fancy one and an everyday one. Like, how on earth have I lived without such a vital tool as an EVERYDAY GRAVY BOAT my whole life??! The humanity. No seriously, though, registering is fun, but overwhelming. Oh, and make sure you plan to go at least twice, if not 3x. I thought it would be a one-and-done thing, but it’s definitely not.

  24. i do miss eating icecream, same reason why I have lovely love handles that I got in college. they are stuck with me forever πŸ™‚

  25. Pam says:

Mmmm. Ben & Jerry’s. Seriously, I can’t ever have that in my house! Doing a blog planner is a good idea – let me know if it helps.

I love hearing about your wedding plans!

  26. Meg says:

Oh God, the 1099s. Taxes! My husband is kindly taking care of all the chaos and paperwork, which I consider fair given I planned . . . well, 90 percent of our wedding last year. And that was its own brand of chaos, as you well know. Good luck with it all!

Also: ice cream. It’s been so long. It’s been too long.

  27. I could really use that e planner! At least you’re young, a runner and have a high metabolism! A pint or two of B&J’s can’t touch you πŸ˜‰ IDK, I’ve want a really good coffee maker too, my Mr. Coffee doesn’t heat up the water hot enough to make good coffee, also, a good conical grinder makes all the difference in good coffee! I agree w you about Keurig.

  28. 1099’s make me want to vomit. Can you pass the ice cream instead?

  29. Kate says:

If you want to feel better about your jury duty, let me tell you – I have Federal jury duty…this whole month. That’s right, a full month. I’m on call and have to call in every night to see if I report the next day. All month.

  30. Megan says:

I know you said don’t say Keurig… but you don’t have to use the K-Cups. There’s a reusable cup that comes with it, and you can fill it with whatever coffee you want… and however much you want. It’s one of my favorite appliances! (Personally, I use the Dark Magic cups which are really strong and roasty.) And man, we have been buying B&J pints every week lately. I swap in the Greek frozen yogurt every now and then so that helps!

  31. Eileen says:

I personally like the classic french press, but then I only drink coffee at home on the weekends (which is to say: I don’t have to scrape grounds out of it every single day). So you probably want something a little nicer, even if it is harder to store in an NYC kitchen! Also, 1099s are easy! All you have to do is add them up, really. You can do it!

  32. Lynn says:

My niece and her housemates used to tack up Ben and Jerry’s lids in their kitchen on campus at the University of Dayton. The walls were covered by the end of their senior year. πŸ™‚

  33. Christina says:

Happy to know my cold weather mac and cheese craving is normal πŸ™‚

  34. Wedding plans sound so fun… you lucky girl! And that ice-cream flavor sounds amazing. Why can’t we get it here?? *cries* And the mac & cheese thing. I approve.
    Have a lovely weekend Joanne!

  35. Darn that Mr Coffee! All I know is get one with the warmer on the bottom. The sales guy convinced my non-coffee drinking hubby to get me one without the warmer so the carafe and cup need to be heated before pouring the coffee in because it ends up COLD with no warmer on the bottom. Coffee is like a 10 step process now in the morning. UG!

  36. Jessie says:

I love the Capresso Coffee Team machine (with burr grinder!) 1. You can program it to freshly grind and start brewing your coffee at a specific time (so you wake up to the delightful smell of coffee), 2. burr grinder = awesome. Word of caution, however– stick to a medium roast bean with this grinder, because the darker roast is more oily and can cause the grinder to stop working.

  37. You better be registering all over crate and barrel…they have no idea what kind of food blogger just hit em!

  38. Caramel flan latte, hmmm, I’ll have to try that one! And adding things to your registry is the best part πŸ™‚

  39. Loving this wednesday coffee talks! And mac and cheese? I’m craving it NONstop! Also I can totally relate about the wedding planning. I think registering was the only thing I got super excited about and I procrastinated just about everything else haha

  40. Melissa says:

It’s very easy to eat a pint of Ben & Jerry’s in one sitting. I think we’ve all been there – Half Baked was my always stocked in my college freezer. Registering for your wedding IS fun!! Start in the store with the scan gun and add it online whenever you feel like it! This is the most simple coffee maker and I use it exclusively now. You can make it as strong as you want, and the clean up is super easy. http://www.amazon.com/Aerobie-AeroPress-Coffee-Maker-Tote/dp/B0018RY8H0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1391649314&sr=8-2&keywords=areo+press

  41. I really want all this Ben n Jerrys love! I am jealous of you! πŸ˜€
But I do NOT want ‘freshman 15… or 20’

    Cheers
    Choc Chip Uru

  42. Hotly Spiced says:

The date night sounds like fun even if it ended in a few too many calories. I don’t think we can buy that ice cream here – probably a good thing – out of sight, out of mind! Jury duty? It never rains, it pours. I’ve been called up three times and so has my husband but we’re both yet to see the inside of the court room. Good luck! xx

  43. my husband tried the caramel flan latte and thought it was pretty much the same too. so you aren’t alone!! and on the coffee front….what about a french press?!? that’s about all we use these days! love πŸ™‚

  44. We have a Breville espresso machine. Best buy Ever! Good luck with jury duty πŸ™‚

  45. Joanne, get an old fashioned Perculator if you want strong coffee!

  46. I know 6 more weeks of winter sounds awful. But I guess we have to live with it and hope it goes by quickly.

  47. ramblingtart says:

Non-stop mac and cheese sounds absolutely exquisite. πŸ™‚ XO

  48. Tara says:

I have a Nespresso but a Breville might interest you? Especially because it is free and the only way you would even think about getting something like that is if it’s a wedding present.

Also, I totally feel you on the Starbucks drinks. Everyone was obsessed with the PSL and I just thought it was too sweet and meh.

  49. Don’t fret about the wedding planning, Joanne! It’s super rewarding when you finally start to see everything come together. Our wedding date is just around the corner and we’re really glad to have started planning early so we don’t have to stress now. Just small baby steps will do the trick. Good luck!

  50. Oh boy, Cinnamon Buns B&J’s…I die. I think I need one of those planners, lol! And I completely agree about the caramel flan latte at Starbucks!!

  51. I have no idea what a 1099 is! I really hope that’s an American reference and not a global adult one, or I am in big trouble…

Aside from the ice cream component, which sounds great, what did you think of American Hustle? It is so highly reviewed, but my husband and I found it long and boring :S I figure I may have defective movie buds to go with your defective caramel flan taste buds!

  52. Erika says:

Omgosh I love your Wednesday coffee talks so much. 1) Ice cream is how I gained my post-college 10. Not really. But Erik and I discovered this Blue Bell Dessert Trio flavor (chocolate-covered cake, cookie dough and brownie bits swirled into vanilla fudge ice cream) and let me just say that we did not buy it (or eat it) by the pint. We’re talking GALLON.
    2) I feel like I have defective taste buds too!! Sometimes Erik will be able to detect these things in food and I’ll be like what are you talking about. Makes me sad when he can taste the avocado I try to hide in banana bread sometimes.
    3) Macaroni and goat cheese!??!
    4) Okay you can get excited about the registry but what about the CAKE TASTING?!?!

  53. I never had jury duty until I moved to NYC. Two days, but I wasn’t picked for a jury.

Go register! It’s seriously the best. I sometimes wonder if Quinn and I got divorced and immediately engaged, could I register all over again?

I have a stack of 1099s, too, and doing some serious tax procrastinating. But, as my daddy always says, “If you don’t make it, they don’t take it.”

  54. Emma says:

Get registry-ing girl! Forget the flowers bring on the kitchenware!
You have some crazy B&J flavours stateside- I think we have about 5 in England.

  55. I swear I have the only husband on the planet who got excited about jury duty last year. He was fascinated. He didn’t even get a good case. Weirdo!

  56. Christine says:

Your shocking experience reminded me of my vacuum when fire started shooting out around the plug. Luckily I grabbed the cord and pulled it out of the socket. Still called the fire dept. since I had visions of “The Money Pit” where Tom Hanks experiences the same thing except he sees the fire moving along the wiring behind the whole length of the wall. Word of advice, do the registry over a few days, give yourself time to really think about what you want/need. I didn’t and later wondered what possessed me to ask for “X”.

  57. Betty says:

A french press will never electrocute you. Once you’ve used it, you’ll never go back to drip coffee- and you can make it as strong as you like. πŸ™‚

  58. Reeni says:

You are going to have so much fun with your bridal registry! You will have to add a room on to store the kitchen haul! πŸ™‚

  59. LOOOOVE my Technivorm coffee maker. Dino got it as payment for some work he did and it’s the best! I’ll make you some super strong coffee next time you come up if you want to take it for a spin πŸ˜‰

  60. I agree about the Starbucks caramel flan latte and about the Keurig not being strong enough! I need like 3 of those to equal the coffee I make for myself every morning in my office with my little $20 coffee maker that makes a travel-mug size of coffee – best purchase I ever made!
