engagement photos by brian samuels photography

1. You guys are basically VIPs. Which is why I am giving you super official first class tickets to our engagement photo previews! (Click here for more!). Brian somehow made us look like real people who like each other. Maybe even love. Impressive.

2. Please note that after these photos were taken, I stuffed my face so hard on all the Smorgasburg things (basically a big food market in Brooklyn) that being sucked in by this dress physically pained me.

3. It was worth every bite.

4. In other wedding-related news: we met with our first DJ yesterday. He only made me want to vomit like, twelve times so I’d say that’s a success.

5. For the record, our wedding atmosphere is not going to be “elegant club” and there will be no hot pink LED uplighting or plasma tvs. No matter what any DJ tries to tell me.

6. All the ladies out there – tinted moisturizer, foundation, both, or neither? Inquiring minds want to know.

7. And then if you want to come over and teach me how to use it, I will reward you in cookies.

8. Your chance to win a year’s supply of berries. Happening RIGHT.NOW. Have you entered yet?!

9. The.Boy who claimed that he was retiring from running after the NYC marathon this past fall (and has since run two half marathons) just told me we “had” to run the Berlin marathon.

10. I think I’ve created a monster.

You guys are adorable! Thanks for sharing the pics 🙂
I can imagine finding a good wedding DJ is a nightmare. I’ve been to many weddings with simply awful music at the after party…!

  2. You were made for each other. Congratz!

  3. Shannon says:

love those photos! and any races that can get you to some fantastic places, i say… why not? 🙂

  4. Lynn says:

LOVE those photos – you both look so happy (probably because you are!)

I dab a little foundation of the areas that need it, but keep it very light, so it doesn’t look as if you could write your name in my face. 🙂 I’ve never used tinted moisturizer, but definitely good moisturizer.

  5. Your photos turned out perfect friend! You totally nailed the whole make-up/hair/dress choice thing!…and your man looks pretty fly too 😉 I wish I could help you on the tinted moisturizer thing, but I’m hopeless!

  6. you two are beautiful 🙂 im pretty hopeless when it comes to makeup tips but i could help you choose your shade if im getting cookies.

  7. Kaitlyn says:

Great photos! I love the color of that dress!

  8. Does the Berlin marathon means he wants to go to Europe??

Love tinted moisturizer – especially for the summer and during the day. For going out at night or times when you feel like you need more coverage the combo of regular moisturizer and foundation is great.

  9. Awwww you guys are so cute!! Love the pictures. Saw the preview late last night on FB! I use just foundation when I’m getting super fancy and I find it to be enough…I don’t think I know how to apply it half the time though. So when I find someone, please help!!!

  10. Leah Davis says:

Love the photos!! The color of your dress is so pretty and your nail color looks great with it too 🙂 You guys look so happy! I am NOT a big makeup person but I do use a really lightweight foundation that has an spf in it too. That way I know I have at least a teeny bit of sunscreen on myself. I like Laura Mercier, but I’m sure there are a ton of brands that make something similar.

  11. first: GORGEOUS PHOTOS!
second: I’m not a makeup person. Like at all. I mean, I wear it everyday, but I only use what Maskcara and HowSweet tells me to use. For my wedding day, I hired a makeup artist who specialized in the ‘natural look” and she used air-brushed foundation on me. I could not have been happier! My skin looked smooth (it isn’t), and my mascara did not smudge under my eyes for once in my life. I think she was like, $100? Well worth it. In my wedding photos, I look like me, not mousy me without enough makeup on for definition.

  12. Lovely photos of the happy couple =)

  13. You’re too funny! (The DJ part especially made me laugh.)
And I love those pictures. They turned out so good!
    Have a great Wednesday Joanne!

  14. Oh my gosh!!! I love your photos!!!!! I’m not sure which way to go with the tinted moisturizer, bronzer, glowing skin, make up or not, thing…but whoever comes over to teach you, can I come too — more so to have a cookie?

  15. Erika says:

    Beautiful photos!! Thanks for sharing…

  16. Megan says:

That dress is RIDICULOUSLY ADORABLE!!! It matches with how adorable you two are! 🙂 🙂

  17. Meg says:

Aw, I love your engagement photo preview — so awesome! You look fabulous, and definitely in love. 🙂

I’m a foundation girl . . . even though my skin has cleared up nicely in adulthood (thank God!), years of acne as a teen have programmed me to put it on every morning. I tend to lighten up and use a tinted moisturizer in summer, but I have super oily skin — and I kind of need that foundation to give me a smooth, matte-ish finish. It’s fun being a woman, no? 😉

  18. Jen E says:

    Beautiful pictures!

  19. Carolyn B. says:

Such great photos (and yes you created a running monster, but Berlin?) .

And my advice – go with foundation. it’ll stay on longer and be more coverage for photos. it’ll look much better in long run. I can show you 🙂

  20. Helllllo stunnnnnnner! For the record I would have ripped the dress off and run around naked at the Smorgasburg cause I can’t have any kind of restrictions when I’m there…plus it’s Brooklyn so like anything goes, right?

  21. SallyBR says:

I am not the best person to give advice on make up stuff – I wear almost no make up, and foundation never touched my face. I find it too artificial and heavy

tinted moisturizer is a good idea, but go light on the color, as natural as possible

as you see, I am all for natural, light, airy. Loved your dress, and you two are looking a lot alike, you notice that? A similar expression… that is a great sign!

  22. Yall are just too cute! Your engagement photos are lovely – the one of yall starring into each others eyes is priceless!
Ok so I don’t really wear makeup – so am clueless as to how or what should be put on – but since you are paying in cookies, I figure we could both learn – what do you think? I mean we have Google and Youtube…? And I promise not to have a “hot pink LED” lighted mirror to use 🙂

  23. Hey !! Your photos are so beautiful! And, finally we get to see the handsome couple! Thanks for sharing, it’s so nice to see you both so happy! And, girlfriend – I definitely would wear tinted moisturizer, bronzer, because it gives you some color without wearing too much make-up.
    Have a great day!

  24. Jordan says:

Love your photos!!! And love the color of your dress, it looks so great on you! I’m not much help in the makeup department. I consider myself a minimalist when it comes to makeup but that is only because I don’t really know how to apply it. I just do a light layer of foundation and call it good. 🙂 I’ve heard good things about tinted moisturizer though, especially for summer.

  25. you guys are too cute! I love your dress! post more about your wedding plans! (I’m a total wedding junkie)

  26. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THE PICTURES!!!!! SO EXCITINGGGGG!!!!!!! You look beautiful and def. in lurrrrrve 😛 My current panic mode is that we’re taking ours in a few weeks and it’s like ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT

Tinted moisturizer AND foundation but not at the same time. I base it upon 1-how my skin looks (if it’s pretty clear I’ll just tinted moisturize it up. If I need a bit more coverage: foundation) 2-the weather (tinted moisturizer won’t melt on ya and alternately in the winter it helps keep you from getting dried out) 3-the occasion. The more laid back the more appropriate tinted moisturizer is.

hope that made any sense lol

  27. Can I just tell you that you are stunning?!! Love the pics!! And I am so giddy for your wedding!

  28. Tinted moisturiser – if you aren’t big on makeup most of the time, wearing foundation can look a bit mask-like. You want to look like you! And your fiance would like to recognise the woman walking towards him. Also, avoid anything called “illuminating” – they have reflective stuff in them that can make flash photography look really ghostlike.

  29. The pics are gorgeous! LOVE them! OMG Smorgesburgh is AMAZEBALLS! Best place ever! As for make up- I use a BBcream. It is like a tinted moisurizer. I don’t feeling I have too much make up on!

  30. Kinsey says:

Your engagement pictures look amazing–congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

  31. Fantastic photos! You two look absolutely lovely together. I can’t wait to see the wedding photos! 🙂

  32. Monique says:

    you look beautiful!!! congrats!
I use a primer followed by a tinted moisturizer, mineral powder foundation (extra on blemishes), blush/bronzer and eye make up. Im a huge fan of kabuki brushes- works awesome.

  33. Karen says:

    Great pictures… thanks for sharing!

  34. Sam says:

Tinted moisturizer w/ SPF. Super Goop is the best.

  35. Julia says:

You’re beaaaaaautiful! And you two are beautiful together! I’m feeling the love. It’s so amazing you two run together – what a wonderful way of bonding and having something healthy to bind you. Berlin half? Pack me in your suit case? xoxo

  36. bellini says:

You look gorgeous Joanne! I am sure the wedding will all come together with as little angst as possible:D Thanks for sharing this small part of your ivies together.

  37. Already commented on fb but i LOVE this pics!!! You two look so great. And your dress is amazing on you 🙂

  38. Kelly says:

Great pics!! And congrats on getting married!

  39. shelley says:

    So cute!!

Right now I use 100 SPF dry-touch sunscreen, followed by neutrogena’s liquid makeup. But I’ve used Clinique’s City Block, which is tinted moisturizer (I think) with SPF, and it always worked great.

  40. Monica says:

Lovely engagement photos, Joanne!! And it’s so nice for me to finally see the.boy. What a sweet couple you guys make.

  41. Beth says:

Love your pictures! And if a trip to Berlin was in the future – I’d actually take up running to go.

  42. i looove your engagement photos! precious!

  43. Looooooove the pictures. As for the powder and foundation, you’re on your own. I can’t even do Haley’s dance recital make-up. I have to call in reinforcements. (I think she likes her Aunt Jen more than me.)

  44. Kate says:

I like foundation myself – but the light stuff, not the heavy cakey stage looking stuff.

  45. I love the dress. Very chic. It is so fun hearing all your plans. Very very fun. Congratulations.

  46. Abby says:

Beautiful photos!! On the makeup front, I don’t normally wear foundation so I went with Mac Mineral powder or something, skinfinish maybe? I’d say just stay away from anything with an spf.

  47. Kathleen says:

Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing these with us!

  48. Such lovely photos! And why the HECK would you need plasma screens at a wedding? I don’t understand. Also, I’m in the tinted moisturizer camp. I’ve never been able to handle foundation, but that’s just me!

  49. Lovely photos! I am by no means a makeup expert, but I like powder foundation. Tinted moisturizer just makes me look too shiny. Good luck!

  50. Love the photos! You look so beautiful and relaxed!

  51. Barbara says:

Super great pics! Love your dress…you both look so happy.
Tinted moisturizer…been using it half my life. Sisley ( yes, I know it’s $$$$) is the best.

  52. Heather says:

You guys look so happy in your pics! Personally, I use foundation (liquid) or the pressed powder foundation – I think that’s what it’s called. I have too many skin imperfections for tinted moisturizer and never can find the right tint…

  53. Your photos are gorgeous!!! My bf, who didn’t even run a couple years ago, is planning his (our?) second marathon….he has yet to run his first marathon 🙂

  54. P says:

love love LOVE the pictures 🙂

  55. Cutest photos!!! Oh– and tinted moisturizer 4eva.

  56. debbie says:

    Absolutely beautiful pictures!!

  57. Reeni says:

The pictures are so beautiful and cute too all at the same time! I’ve never worn a tinted moisturizer in my life. Sounds scary. I only wear foundation like twice a year and I use a primer underneath. Makes it go on smoother. Good luck looking for a dj!

  58. Krista says:

I love these!! You guys look so happy and comfy together. 🙂 The Berlin marathon would be AMAZING!!! 🙂

  59. How lovely! You guys look so cute!

No to tinted moisturizer nor foundation – I’m all about CC cream nowadays 🙂

  60. Ah, I LOVE these pics! So fun and you guys look great!

  61. Veronica says:

Aw, I love the pics! Wedding happies!

  62. I’ve used the all in one face powder from The Body Shop since I was in my twenties. Easiest to put on and looks natural 🙂

  63. Hotly Spiced says:

So gorgeous and the weather has turned – for the better – finally! I definitely would go with foundation as it’s a long day and there will be lots of photos and foundation hides a lot of flaws (not that you have any – I’m speaking from personal experience!) And yes, I’ve heard jogging is addictive; I’m hoping that will happen for me because I’m still in the, ‘I hate jogging’ phase xx

  64. Your pictures are wonderful! What gorgeous shots. I’m so glad you found such a great photographer as I am sure you’ll treasure these long term.

I’d go with foundation for wedding (and indeed I did!) even though I usually wear tinted moisturizer…

  65. Nicole, RD says:

LOVE!!! The last time I saw you (I think..) we were walking the streets of San Fran and we were talking about how sucky dating is and what your perfect guy would be like. And, you found him 🙂 So happy for you, Joanne!! 🙂

  66. What a sweet couple! You look fit and GREAT in that red dress, Joanne.

  67. elizabeth e says:

love the pics! y’all definitely look like you at least “like” each other!

  68. Lookin good girl!!! Tinted moisturizer all the way! Try a BB cream. I love it. It is perfect for the summer.

  69. Gorgeous photos, Joanne!! I’m a BB cream user all the way. Love that that it gives some coverage but still light and moisturizing.

  70. Pam says:

You guys look great! I’ve never tried tinted moisturizer so I am of no help. Sorry.

  71. I LOVE these captures…you two are gorgeous!

  72. Tahnycooks says:

absolutely beautiful! red is so your color!

  73. hahaha!!! This is SUCH A CUTE POST!!!! You guys look ADORABLE together! <3 I personally LOVEEEE using tinted moisturizer 'cause it gives a more dewy effect but that's obviously for everyday use. Foundation would be the BEST for your wedding day! 🙂

  74. These shots are so, so lovely! That color looks awesome on you.

To answer your lady-question: Neutrogena sunblock + Bare Minerals on top.

  75. Christine says:

Great photos, so happy. You look wonderful in that red dress! I vote for foundation. You want a workhorse that will last the day. Just my thought. Again, super pics.

  76. I love your pictures!! You two make a lovely couple!

  77. loooove your photos so much! Ryan and I could never do these…we’re too awkward…but you guys look like pros!

  78. Great photos, girlie! You two look great! And don’t be afraid to boss around the DJ. We gave ours a list of “do not play” artists, and said that if he played Celine Dion, we would get an annulment. Yup.

  79. Lynna says:

The pictures are SO CUTE!!! 😀

Haha, I hardly know anything about makeup!! I`m pretty sure I look like a clown when I do wear them!!

  80. Your pictures are amazing! Love that red dress. Also, for me foundation all the way, but everyone has a different preference and I have crappy skin. I so wish I could show you how to use it, and not just for the cookies 🙂 I love Armani’s Luminous Silk foundation. Also no matter what any makeup department workerror tells you, your fingers are the best tool for applying it – not a brush.

  81. Love the engagement photos! So happy for you!

  82. Susan says:

Aw, great photos, Joanne! What a cute couple you make (don’t throw up).

  83. Megan says:

    Gorgeous photos, Joanne!

  84. Chantal says:

    Hi Joanne
    Those photos are so beautiful!
    Both of you

  85. gloria says:

    Beautiful pics Joanne!

  86. Foodiewife says:

I am so far behind in reading my favorite blog posts. But, I had to stop here and look. You two look so happy and in-love. I’m so happy for you!
